My mother as a young girl was bending down to pick up something in the kitchen just as a V1 landed and destroyed all the houses next door and blew her across the room. I remember her describing how glass was everywhere and her father running across it in bare feet to find her. Fantastic video and thanks for sharing.

My political science professor mentioned a story of how his mom was from a well off family living in sort of a mansion. One day his mom's family was right outside in the field and saw a rocket in the sky fall down right on top of their mansion. Didn't say the extent of the damage.

My mother and father were children during the war and both survived. They both lived in East Ham and recalled the terror of the V1 rockets flying overhead. You preyed that it did not go silent as they were passing overhead. If it did you knew they were falling in your vinicity. My mother recalled the day a V1 flew overhead and then silence. It was a direct hit on the Jelly factory around the corner. She recalled as a child searching the rubble for Jelly with all the other local children. My mother has since passed. God rest her soul.

I finished a book called "12 seconds of silence" a couple days ago and was captivated by the story it told about the smart fuse American scientists had developed during WWII. Those specially made fuse tubes were attached to the tips of the ammunitions and could be detonated beside a plane accurately, an incredible accomplishment at that time. London was practically saved by these smart fuses in 1944, when Nazis bombed the city with autopiloted V1s. I was trying to look for any existing footage of the anti-aircraft guns firing at London, and I stumbled upon this amazing video! Thanks for sharing!

My Nan was a child in the war when this was going on. A V-1 went overhead. Fell silent and landed a few streets away. She also recalls her mother telling her that a bomb from a He-111 landed directly on top of her house and she was blown out of her cot across the street. She miraculously survived with little injuries. I can’t even begin to fathom a time like this. What a dark part of history but what amazing stories they all have to share. My mother took my brother to the welfare in Somers Town in his new pram which she'd had to wait for. She chained the new pram to the railings with a padlock to stop it getting nicked while she was inside. A V2 was heard inside and the mothers all flung themselves to the floor protecting their babies. After the bang she went outside to see all the other mothers' prams blown down the road. Her new pram chassis was still safely chained to the railings, but the top was gone forever.

Much bigger problem was the V2 rockets. They flew fast and high. When one dropped through the clouds there was very little time to take shelter.

The V1 was the first ever self flying missile created. The successor of the V1, the V2, was even the first ballistic missile ever and also the first man Made object in space (over 100km, the Karman line). When we look at footage of WW2 we always see this "old" war and the old times but those rockets are modern warfare. The V2 launched and found their target (still not perfectly tho, they missed a lot of times) and could fly at the speed of sound. Those people went through the horrors of modern warfare, the same stuff some people around the world are still going through.

  • @TransoceanicOutreach

The V2 was a hypersonic weapon, just like the ones fired at Ukraine today. It could travel over five times the speed of sound. It was also militarily useless, as it was very inaccurate. The germans fired 11 to take out a bridge, the closest landed 400 yards away, the furthest 40 miles away. The rest were all many miles away.

It's remarkable to see also the effect of a tonne of explosives and the wide percussion effect compared to the previous blitz era bombs. Although traumatic they were flawed as they couldn't due to technical limitations of the time be specifically guided to a particular target thus in effect a terror weapon with some stategic effect but not a tactical weapon. ..."Extensively," in this case is a very subjective term. From what I can discern, 10-15,000 V1s were launched, and A little over 3,000 V2s were launched. So, certainly there were 4x more V1s used, but that's not as big of a gap as one might otherwise typically believe. Besides, given that the V2 cost about 20x more than the V1 but delivered a similar payload, I imagine that the V1 would have always been the more popular weapon with German armed forced no matter how long the war had gone on.

The official German statistics estimated 763,000 civilian malnutrition and disease deaths were caused by the blockade of Germany.[4] That figure was disputed by a subsequent academic study, which put the death toll at 424,000.[1] The German official statistics came from a German government report published in December 1918 that estimated the blockade to be responsible for the deaths of 762,796 civilians, and the report claimed that that figure did not include deaths caused by the Spanish flu epidemic in 1918.

@@hannahdyson7129 Did you read about the lies that were floated about German Empire soldiers nailing Belgium babies to walls? Many lies were used as weapons against The German Empire military. Some of them stick to this day for people that have not researched them. The German Empire did not start WW l. The Austro-Hungarian Empire gave an ultimatum to Serbia. (WW l had been brewing for many, many years before it happened). It was not just about the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. When the Austro-Hungarian Empire advanced on Serbia, The Russian Empire came in as allies of Serbia and The German Empire came in as allies of The Austro-Hungarian Empire. Read the Counter Fire article by Dominic Alexander. Ten lies told about World War I. The British also spread lies to rile up the British people that the Germans were inoculating French soldiers with tuberculosis. All lies and I'm sure there were many lies about the Germans floated about WW ll also. I do believe that the Holocaust happened. The estimate is up to 6 million Jews. That figure can never be accurately verified but it is probably close to 6 million. The death toll of Hamburg can never be fully verified either. It is probably higher than the victors claim.

@@hannahdyson7129 I was partially raised and at times lived with two WW l German grandparents from Hamburg. My grandfather was a soldier in the army of The German Empire. I often lived with them in New York. I was given information from the people that lived through WW I. My Opa died when I was 23 and my Oma when I was 36. I asked them unlimited questions even as a young boy. They hated the war and went through hell. Both of them came close to death many times. If you have a bug in your bonnet, no one is going to remove it. I never heard about the lies about Belgian babies and inoculation of French soldiers with tuberculosis until about 10 years ago. If I ever mentioned those lies to my grandfather he would not have yelled at me but would have exploded with anger. They both went through hell.
