4K・ 【4K】Rainy walk in evening Shibamata

Not a vlog, no intrusive faces or talking, pure Japan only.
I was busy on weekend and did not walk, so I decided to do it after work. I expected some raining so protected gear before it started.
Shibamata district is located in Katsushika city in the north-eastern part of Tokyo. Unfortunately shrine I was going to was closed, but street in front of it was looking nice and old. I plan to come here again later during the day.

Time 09/26 20:30
Filmed in UltraHD 4K 60p with Lumix GH5 camera, 8-18 f2.8-4 lens, Beholder EC1 stabilizer and Audio-Technica AT9946CM mic.

Amen. Contrast these amazing night walks with a place like Baltimore where each time I visit on business, locals warn me to be back to my hotel before dark...and they are right, judging from what I've observed from my hotel room.

Like Detroit, the former great city of Baltimore has been in precipitous decline for some time now as the middle class vote with their feet and abandon the city for greener pastures well away from the city's insane tax levels, dilapidated infrastructure, appalling schools, corrupt authorities, abject poverty and its accompanying violence, drug use and ethnic/racial animosity. For a city of barely 600K, it had more than 340 officially reported murders last year and has an outrageous per capita average of 98-99 violent crimes per 10K residents. Only people that live there are those that have to because of work (a lot of State and Federal jobs there), are affluent enough to insulate themselves from the rot or are too poor to leave. Good news is that it's one small, backwards city on a continent that is otherwise crammed full of decent, safe places to live a life and raise a family.

It just hit me how respectful you are in your travels, the way you speak to people , how you walk through crowded areas or busy streets, or film stuff like food stalls, yatai, and street performances. At the shrines you tread gently and throw in a coin donation at each one you visit. Sometimes I see comments in videos about Japan from people wanting to visit and be mindful of the culture and the people, and sometimes the reply is don’t be like a certain KZread blogger. I think the reply should be, if you want to behave thoughtfully and respectfully be like Rambalac.

I’m in the UK so I find it fascinating how no one is bothered by walking about in those poorly lit narrow streets. Over here people wouldn’t feel safe but the one thing I pick up on in all videos shot around Japan is how safe and peaceful the place seems. The strange thing is, I’ve never been there but I already love the people and their way of life. There something calming about them and yet they live is one of the most busy cities on earth.

Thank you for taking us on mesmerizing walk Rambalac! The quiet stillness of dark alleyways with only the sound of your foot steps and the rain against the background chirping of the cicadas. The swoosh of cars and the chatter of people in the better lighted more well traveled areas. All punctuated at times by the whooping of trains or the wail of sirens, as this is part of a city. Very lovely

You might want to check out the old serial film series "Otoko wa Tsurai Yo", also known simply as "Tora-san". It ran for 25 years and was set and filmed in this neighborhood... those who've seen the films may feel they know this neighborhood well by proxy. The films may have had a "protective" effect on this area, anchoring Shibamata in the popular mind so to speak. That's my theory anyway.

I can attest that visiting the old shopping street and the temple in Shibamata during the day is a must. I went during new years time in 2016/17. Unfortunately, they had the garden closed when I visited, but they did have the main building open and allowed visitors to enter (which is normally not the case, as I understand). The tree with the supported branches is really cool, but the most spectacular part is the old building with the Buddhist Jataka carved into the side of it. (You have pay a little to see that part, but I think it is only ¥200 - ¥300, so well worth the price.)

Oh and thank you for the video! You had a great, near perfectly clean audio of a Japanese train level crossing. That has been really hard for me to find. (Normally, when I find a recording of a Japanese level crossing the audio is not very good. Either it is low quality, cuts out a portion of the cycle, a car is idling in the background, or something like that is in the recording and ruins is for me. So thanks for that!)
