Some drivers use the loco brake coming down the incline with a light load just to keep the speed under control, the driver might not have known about the wheels sparking until he set off the hot box detector at Stoke Works unless he stuck his head out of the window.

looks like the class 47 driver hasn't noticed the wheels near the back of his loco is on fire mate and the bloke who is near the loco in the first coach can see the problem mate

The Class 50s as built had dynamic nrakes. I recollect that there were problems with the blocks overheating after the Western Region had the dynamic brake isolated.

This is how 47s used to catch fire if the underframe degreasing was not carried out on the regular

Im not sure it was just the straight air brake, i can see some sparks coming from the coach bogies to! I can remember 47's regularly putting on a light show like this one back in the day. Its pretty bloody exceptional though! You can see how they catch fire!

This is also why in America, loco's have dynamic brakes aswel as friction tread brakes!

That could be the hand brake is dragging or not released propley. Or bad driving !!

+Terry Macavoy Very unlikely hand brake as it only works on the centre axle of each bogie on a 47.Sparks like these from 47's were a daily occurance back in day under heavy braking.

In most cases it was (and still is) bad driving.
Idk why, but that don't look safe to me
