Luckily, no one, but the same could not be said about 475. "My aching smokebox," she groaned. "I'm sorry," said the crane. "I didn't know you were coming onto this siding." "I wasn't supposed to! The point was incorrectly switched," she snapped. "Tell me. Why were you sitting on this siding?" The voice did not come from 475. It came from the fat director, who was red in the face, and most upset. The crane was silent for a moment. "I'm sorry, sir," he replied at last. "My controller wanted me to park here. I told him that it might not be a good idea, but he told me I was too worried. I...fell asleep...to calm my nerves. I didn't realize the point was changed." The fat director heaved a slow, frustrated sigh. "I see. You should be more attentive in the future. As for your controller, I will have a word with him later. As for you, 475," he said, turning to the hurt engine, "you must be sent to the workshop for repairs at once. I will make sure of it that you are given the utmost care to run by next week." "Yes...sir," said 475, wearily. The fat director walked toward her cab, and eyed her crew, sternly. "This was an accident, that's obvious, but that doesn't mean only one side is at fault. Do tell, did you bother to see if the point was changed?" "No sir," said the fireman. "We assumed the point was already changed." "You're both experienced in operating this railroad, and you should know by now that assumptions can lead to consequences like this," the fat director stated. "Be VERY grateful that this did not result in a worse accident! People could have been hurt today, but we are very fortunate that 475 was traveling slowly. We will discuss this in much more detail later, as there is much work to be done," he finished.

Welp. She’s back in service again! The damage looks worse on video, but only a part of the boiler was damaged. Had the whole crown sheet and everything been punctured, the accident would have been fatal. A perfect reason why OCD is a benefit when it comes to railroading.

The crown sheet is at the very rear of the locomotive next to the cab. The part that got damaged was the smoke box cover and chimney flue in the very front. The only thing that was going through there was hot exhaust gasses and cylinder steam going to and from the cylinders but not any of the controls that guide that steam from the boiler. No worries just a wounded face and a big embarrassment. Would be interesting to know if it was an NS ROW crew member that locked the switch the wrong way?
