Same here 23yrs and all 3 are still running beast mode. Husky always felt weak thin and just not right. But I have been running Stihl my whole life most hours behind my 066 magnum.

Ran both brands growing up in the log woods. Like either one. Used a husky to split my left hand down the middle. 18yr old end of day on a fri, money in my pocket made a mistake. Doc put it back together. 3 fingers work together but dont notice it. Lol got the 455 now for around the place. Not bad saw at all.

4 hands and two saws are better than 1!

To connect the flat face connectors, 1-do not put grapple in direct sunlight. The sun will heat up the oil and expand, making the connection difficult. 2-have one person hold the hydraulic valve open while you connect the line with the tractor off. You may have to move the valve back and forth to let the pressure off of both lines. On my skid steer, I can hold down the foot control while connecting the lines. It will not connect most times if I did not hold down the foot valve. I also connect the attachments male and female connectors together when I disconnect from skid steer. This equalizes the pressure and protects the fittings when not in use. If the attachments hydraulic cylinders get hot from being in direct sunlight, I will run water from a hose on the cylinders to cool it off so you can connect the lines. I did have to disconnect the lines until I took these steps. I have not had to disconnect the lines in many years.

You should close your grapple then shut off tractor and rock the toggle switch for grapple to release pressure then unhook your fittings. We use these grapple all the time and it's the only way to keep the pressure off that we have found.

I grew up running stihl saws being a farm kid who helped his old man sell stove wood and logs all winter. I currently do not own a stihl. I own an echo 590, a husky 394, and a jonsered 2245 (husky 445). I've run a pile of stihls. 009, 170, 210, 024, 025, 026, 270, 034, 036, 361, 362, 391, 038 super, 440, 046, and 661. Might be missing a saw or two, but I've run a pile of them. In saying this, the comparable saws in comparable CC class and grade are..... You guessed it, comparable. They are very much so preference based as far as controls and ergos go. As far as this comparison goes, I suggest testing an echo 590 to compare. Priced at 270/450 prices, yet gets compared to these two saws when really I feel it surpasses every 60-65cc non-pro saw from any manufacture. Curious your opinion.

I've heard good things about the Echo's, I've really ever only run their top handle arborist saws and weed whackers! I'd love to test one out, send it on over! 😂

I totally agree I am impressed with the echo 590 , my buddy has one he runs a 32 in bar and it pulls it just fine

Another good show, at this time the only Stihl is a MSA-220c that out climber James when liming off. Before they push it over with the excavator, something we pick-up from Mike Morgan. Catch you on #47.

I just bought 455 and my neighbor bought the 291 which I think is the updated model to the 290. My 455 will run circles around it.

Thanks John! Personally I prefer the stihl. I’ve also upgraded it since this video with a ms-390 motor and ported the exhaust! Much different saw ever since!

While an older video, I am sure many will see it later. My father was a timber cutter for nearly 10 years. During those years his father, brothers, and him all ran stihl chainsaws! Excellent reliable saws! He still uses them to this day 30+ years later! There were also those on the mountain that ran Husqvarnas! And the rivalry was real of which saw was superior and why! In the end though both brands rip and get the job done. The biggest factors though was the operators and how they maintained their saws and keeping them sharp. My father was a 3 star logger for his first few years and became a 5 star logger in later years with awards to prove it. Husqvarna operators were also 5 star loggers with awards to prove it! Find a saw that is comfortable to you and get proper instruction in how to be efficient and safe with your saw of choice!

Yep very similar, although with flat face you can just push right in without pulling back the collar!

I just got a 455 rancher husqvarna give to me it was made in 2011. I don't use the primer and i don't use the compression release and i have no problem starting the saw. I agree the saw doesn't need them

I would have to agree, I don’t feel it’s big enough of a saw to really justify the compression release although a nice feature. However, the 660, 880, and 3120 we use at work are different animals 😂 check out my latest video on my ms-290 to 390 conversion!

Anyone know if there is any way to tell what year it was manufactured? Bought mine new, but I have no idea how old it is. Probably over 20 years I'm guessing. No paperwork around for it anymore

How is the measuring tool for the bar attached? And where can I find it?

It’s attached by a magnet, there is a link for it in the description. “Accu-mark”

I've had both. Generally happy with both brands except the Stihls tend to weigh a bit more and can be a pain to start in cold weather. Looking for a new saw, I found the 455 on A'zon today with a 20% off coupon (Prime), making the price $396. That's about $50 cheaper than the 450. I jumped on that..... and, yes, parts tend to be more available and cheaper for the Husqies.

Both great saws with that have their merits.

When ur young and prime all is good.get older shoulder get bad decompression button is a life saver.

Completely close grapple and switch tractor off and then wiggle lever all around and then there will be no pressure when you go to hook back up. Been doing this way for many years with no problem.

I have the 455 rancher and absolutely love it

You really can’t go wrong with either saw! I’m thinking you’re referring to the magnetic measuring stick for measuring the length of firewood. It’s called the accu-mark

Do a muffler mod on that 290 and readjust your carb. Wake that thing up lol. It’s a decent saw , I have. If I was to buy a modern version of a similarly sized saw today . I’d step up to the 261. 2lbs less and 1/4 more Horse power. I also run an 18” bar with 3/8 full chisel vs the stock 20” bar with .325. Between the shorter bar, bigger chain, muffler mod and retune, it’s a pretty good firewood saw

My father has the 261 and loves it! I'll have to look into the mods you've listed, I like the 290 for firewood because its light and doesn't tire you out. But that being said, it could use a bit more power!

Its called a "pickaroon" mine is made by Fiskars and carries a lifetime warranty.

Well I've always been a Husky guy, but my cousin always talked up Stihl. So I nought a used 440 magnum and i can say I am very impressed with the power. It will keep up with my 372XP no prob, my 372XPW well maybe not 😂😂😂 or my 2100XP but it shouldn't because it has less cc than both.

My experience with the Husky 4 series saws is that they cut well but have some compromises. The chain brake is not the best design and the air filter is too small. They start easily when cold but can be a bear to start when hot.

I've used steel and Husqvarna saws in my experience with the same engine size the husqvarna's have more to torque and they climb RPMs faster

Great video but the comparison isn’t in the same era, you are running a more advanced sthil saw vs a older husky, I’m sure the firing advancement makes the sthil more “torqy” I own both

They husky is a bit older but I don’t think by much, both are great saws!

Maybe try sticking a screwdriver into the couplers of the hydraulic lines to bleed them, instead of unbolting.

I normally equal out the pressure before disconnecting which helps!

Liked the video!! I have a Stihl 290 and am looking at replacing it with a Husq 455 or even a Husq 555. The problem is that the Stihl 290, has no compression relief valve (crv), is a real pain the start - literally. When it is cold it may take eight +/- pulls of the cord (full choke) before it 'pops'. Most of the pulls the start cord can not be pulled more than half way before it is yanked out of your hand. Once it "pops" -then reset the choke to idle and it generally starts with the second pull. The other morning - was cold - took about 14 pulls. Took it to the local Stihl dealer - he said he had three others that day come in with the same problem! The Husq 455 and above have a crv which I understand makes it a LOT easier to start. Comments on the ease of starting the S 290 vs the Husq products?

Hey there Ken, I’ve had my 290 for a few years now and never have any trouble starting in the cold weather, and I don’t think it’s ever yanked the cord out of my hand. The compression relief button is nice to have on larger saws but I don’t even use it on my MS-362. At work I’ll use it on our 660 and 3120. As far as ease of starting goes between the 290 and 455 I find the 290 to be easier every time. I think the way the choke is designed is much easier to work with especially with thick winter gloves despite it not having a primer bulb. Might want to look into having your 290 tuned or check out some specs for tuning online. I have a cheap Amazon spark plug tach that I hook up and tune my saws myself and it can make a world of difference! Hope this helps, don’t hesitate to ask more questions!

Right now I can’t fully pull my Ms 290 farm boss. It’s an older one. I had Yervoy infusions for melanoma which caused me to lose a great deal of strength. Do I don’t know what the matter is for sure. I will have my son or grandson try, both are strong. Then take to shop. I miss it.

My 290 yanked the cord out of my hand until I pulled the muffler and cleaned the screen

I have both Husky and stihl saws in comparable sizes …..they both have their up and downs and overall imo it comes down to what you’re use too….some of those concerns with the husky have been changed and improved like mentioned …..I’ve had great luck with both brands and granted , I’ve never bought a brand new saw before…all second hand with lots of neglect…

I need my saw to run every time I want to use it!

I know for sure that the New Stihl chainsaw covers now have three or four screws to access the filter and they still have these unpleasant gas and oil caps.

They do, my MS-362 has three screws however they only need to turn a 1/2 turn to pop off, kind of like a quick disconnect screw whereas the screws on the Husqvarna are the conventional kind.

Yeah,I like my older saws way better,I hate the newer style covers that require tools. I also dislike the flip caps,I've had to replace all of mine at least once,but not my 30 year old screw on caps!

Hey there Craig, the tractor is a great tool! Are you asking about my grapple? It’s an Everything Attachments 55” Wicked Grapple, I use it for everything! Back when I bought it they were $2,000 I believe the prices have since increased and the waiting list is quite long! However I think it’s well worth it! Their customer service is top notch! I have many videos using it!!

Black Friday refers to how businesses do so much business on that day that there books move into The Black, in accounting terms that means profitable.

I like my Stihl saws but will never buy one of their products again. I have a little MS170 for doing trim work and the plastic oil feed gear stripped. Now you can buy knockoffs online for $5, but 10 years ago just the little plastic gear cost $65 and was only available at the dealer. This part should have been a couple of bucks, instead it cost about a third of a brand new saw. I know this is a cheapo model, but the parts should not cost this much. I also had to make two 20 mile round trips to the dealer, wait several days for the part to get ordered and work around their limited hours. I wrote the company a thoughtful letter explaining my situation and received no reply. I love their designs, love the way their saws cut, but now I check parts availability on any machine I buy.

Black Friday means the retailers want to get into the black and out of the red. Red meaning sales below the average, like a red warning. Black means they have gotten out of that red sales range.

I've always heard that black friday denotes the day that retail businesses have met their expenses for the year and sales from black Friday till the end of the year are all profit. Idk, maybe true once upon a time, but I doubt it's true today. As for "a bigger trigger isnt a better trigger" that's what saws with small triggers say.

Never mentioned the difference between the two on clutch & chain brake. Stihls clutch and chain brake is internal where the Rancher is external, meaning clutch is on side of saw and chain goes behind it and brake is made into chain cover.. That's the biggest difference between the Husky & Stihl

@@dentondunn4346 I prefer my Stihl 290, I was just using both yesterday and I find the choke/on/off switch on the husky to be difficult to use with thick winter gloves on. Nothing against the performance of the saw itself just personal preference.

Another thing is take a ms290 and put a ms390 piston and jug on it a 455 is just a 455 I own a ms250 and 2 ms291s and a 562xp husky love all of them but my favorite is my poulan 330 pro

When you run a business you try to run it in the "black" which your making money rather in the "red" losing money!. So on black Friday the retail stores are making money with all the business even with the sales that appeals to the customers!. I'm husqvarna man!, but now a days sthil makes a good saw as well! Including the new state of the art 500i fuel injected saw!. I can get OEM parts online for husqvarna saws! Which I seldom ever need!, not sure on sthil saws!. Shut tractor off, turn ignition on and work your boom and bucket control until it relieves your hydraulic pressure and your lines will hook right up!, have a great day!.

the Huskies do feel cheap. The pro Huskies are nice but the Lowe's models are chincy

They really are both good saws, in the end it really comes down to operator preference as far as ergonomics between one saw and the other, personally I prefer the Stihl on/off/choke switch over the husky.

i feel like i can lean on my husky a little harder without it bogging down than my stihl i have the same two saws i prefer the feel of the stihl i prefer the power low end of the husky all in all if you are looking to buy one to use all the time i recommend husky
