The letter read “though I never met Sarah, her father is my first cousin and speaks highly of her passion to succeed in the entertainment industry” - signed George Lucas

Saw Star Wars as a 5 year old kid during the film's opening week, in a sold out theater. Waited 90 minutes in line with my dad. The crowd was so pumped up, it was electric. The movie not only lived up to the hype, but absolutely blew my mind. I still get goose-bumps thinking about that experience. Star Wars made me fall in love with going to the movies. Wish I would've held onto my Star Wars toy collection, would be worth six figures today. I even had the Boba Fest figure that you had to send away for!

I used to go to the conventions back in those days before it was released and there was no info about it at all there. A group of about 10 of us all stood in line opening day in front of the Graumans Chinese Theater for 4 hours. The screen was HUGE and the sound was incredible. When Han's ship went into hyperspace for the first time the crowd cheered.

When they did the Japanese release of the film in 1978,Lucas and everybody thought it was going to be a disaster in Japan as the audience was silent during the film But,in actual fact, silence is the biggest compliment a Japanese audience can pay to a film.

One of my favorite memories when it comes to learning about the behind the scenes of Star Wars is when I saw a documentary called "From Star Wars to Jedi" on PBS in 1983. I was already fascinated by how things are made, but that show really fueled my desire to know everything about Star Wars. I looked for every book set in the story world and that was about the making of the films that I could find. Many were borrowed from our local libraries, but a few were given to me, so I still have them such as The Star Wars Storybook and a series of Time Life books that are full of cutaways and blueprints of Star Wars and other sci-fi movie tech. Since then, I've read most of the Star Wars novels that were published before the sequel movies came out. Since then, there have just been too many to keep up with, but I read a few of the newer ones. The best of those that I've read so far being the Guardians of the Whills which is a prequel story to Rogue One about Baze Malbus and Chirrut Inwe. Excellent book! There have also been quite a few documentaries and making-of featurettes about Star Wars over the years, one of my favorites being Empire of Dreams. The featurettes on the VHS boxed sets and on the DVDs are certainly good reasons to get those versions of the movies and I have them in my almost too big for my living room movie and book library. My wife jokes that we'll have to get floor to ceiling shelves installed if I get too many more books and movies. :) Some great info here! I'll add that with the Millenium Falcon, the original design that was sleeker looked coincidentally looked almost exactly like what wound up in the TV show Space: 1999. The Eagle One that you see in that show is very close to what the Falcon almost looked like. Space 1999 debuted in 1975 - just when things were starting to really come together in the Star Wars production departments. When Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston saw the show, they realized that they needed to redesign. Then they asked Lucas who said "Well, what design shape haven't we tried yet? How about a UFO or a hamburger?" Joe worked all night to come up with the now iconic Falcon ship. R2D2 is certainly my favorite robot or droid of all time. C3PO is a close second with FX-7, MSE (Mouse Droid), 21-B, K-9 from Doctor Who, Marvin the Robot from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and the Rascal wind-up robots from TOMY (which had to stand in for R2D2 until the action figures came out in 1978) vying for third place. Princess Leia's bosoms were held in place with gaffer tape in A New Hope under that iconic princess dress. :) I Didn't know that Liz Moore died before the movie came out. Good bit of trivia there and a really sad situation. I also didn't know that it took three people to play Greedo. Knew about who wore the suit for distant shots and the voice but not the actress for closeups. That's odd that they had two suit wearers. I had forgotten that the Jedi were almost called the Dionegas. Sounds kinda funny now considering that that name was later given to the trash monster in the Death Star in the novels, but if the change hadn't been made, we'd still happily be calling them that. Dionega Master Yoda actually sounds quite exotic. Knowing what we know now, though, Dionega Master sounds like an even worse job than Rancor Keeper. :) I can imagine Orson Welles as Darth Vader. With a bit of sound editing to lower his voice a bit and maybe re-recorded through a filter it would have sounded quite scary. He had a very powerful voice. I suspect, though I haven't read anything official about this that Welles was a bit out of Star Wars' budget as he was very famous by the 70's. Better known than James Earl Jones was at that time. The Force of Others wound up being a big plot point in the sequels with Rey being able to get messages from earlier Jedi through the Force. It confused a lot of fans, but I remembered reading about the original concept of the Force many years ago when I saw those movies. The dogfights really revolutionized the space scenes in the movies. Before Star Wars, spaceships just kinda dangled on wires and fishing lines in front of stationary cameras in most movies before 1977. You can totally tell when Sci-Fi movies were made by looking at the spaceship scenes. Movies before Star Wars have a totally different and less dynamic look than the ones that came out after Star Wars. Richard Pryor Show and Donnie and Marie Show's Star Wars specials were pretty neat. Marie Osmond looked quite fetching as Leia. If Carrie hadn't been available, she would have done nicely in the role. It's amazing that they have been almost forgotten. Thanks for bringing them up! My favorite Star Wars special episode of a show though was when The Muppet Show had C3PO, R2D2, Chewbacca and Luke (all played by their original actors) in it. Gonzo was fantastic as his own special version of Darth Vader called Dearth Nadir as was Miss Piggy as Princess Leia. The guest stars wind up 'accidentally' messing up an episode of Pigs In Space on the Muppet Show which had been on the show since before Star Wars as a very funny spoof of Star Trek. I even used to take a Pigs In Space lunchbox to school when I was a kid. The helmets of Darth Vader and the Death Star Troopers reminded me, even as a kid, of World War II German helmets blended with Samurai helmets. The highly polished black high-topped boots and gray uniforms added to the impression of WWII German officers. Loved this video! Great info and some great images and film clips. I never tire, for example, of hearing David Prowse speaking Darth Vader's lines. Someone working at Elstree Studios called him 'Darth Farmer' because of his thick, rustic English accent. You do masterful editing and show hosting work.

In 1977, my buddies and I were all excited to see Star Wars when it first came out. That was a long time ago, but I don't think we went the first time as a group. I know that my first clear recollection of seeing it was much later in the year. I remember because as I drove home, snow started blowing against my windshield and it reminded me of the stretching star field effect as the Millennium Falcon went into hyperdrive. I know that I saw it earlier than that because it came out while school was still in session. In all, I saw it 25 times in the theaters. I remember this fact because my friends and I were competing to see who could see it the most. I lost ... by a LOT. My friends had much more money than I did to spend on such things. And most of my viewings were cheaper matinee showings where I went solo. But, holy crap did we all love that movie. I remember that we discussed among ourselves what might happen next, so you can imagine how excited we were when the second film was announced. I'm not going to pretend that anything we talked about actually appeared in the movie. Way too much water under that bridge. But by the time the second movie came out, we were all graduated from school and off doing our own things. However, my first date with a special girl was taking her to see The Return of the Jedi when it came out, and I am happy to say that she and I are still together!

Great Rewind Episode! Lots of amazing Ep 4 facts!! It's interesting when you discuss the Star Wars posters, looking at the original Jung poster that was created verse the later Hildebrandt poster. There's always a lot of confusion with those two. If I remember correctly the Jung poster was a little too dark for Lucas, so they hired the brothers to come in and lighten it up. I always enjoy looking at the two side by sidings seeing the minor differences, but it was Jung who had original idea and layout. Seems completely bonkers to think that ANH was in theaters for 135 weeks - thats 2.5 years!!!! Wow! 🤯 Very cool!!

Of course. No home video back then. If you wanted to see a movie you went to a theater. Or waited possibly years to see it on television. Theaters of course also showed possibly decades old movies between the new releases because, again, you could not choose when to watch something, if you wanted to see it you had to watch when it was available. I saw several old westerns first time in a theater, like Rio Bravo, and when I was a very young child several old Tarzan movies (that was the 60s) that were then already between 20 to 40 years old. Would not work these days no matter how popular a movie became because a big percentage of the people who liked it well enough for repeat viewings will prefer to watch at least most of those repeats in their homes. So while we may get occasional celebration theater showings, the actual runs will stay shorter and those later showings are made into an event, just one day or so, not something like a week.

Another fun fact: The Luke Skywalker from the 1974 rough draft would evolve into Obi-Wan Kenobi The 1974 Luke Skywalker was a friend of Kane Starkiller, who was the father of Annikin Starkiller. Kane was a Jedi on the run being kept alive by cybernetic implants/enhancements,a concept that was saved and used for Darth Vader. By the way,in the 1974 rough draft, Vader wasn't a Sith Lord or even a Force user, rather he was simply a very brutal Imperial general.

A long time ago in the summer of 1977, I was a 10 year old kid who, one day, walked into a movie theatre to see "some far-out space movie" that was rapidly becoming "the talk of the town" on the schoolyard playground... I walked in an innocent, naive little child, only interested in Duncan Yo-yos, Mad Libs, Marshall Brodien TV Magic Cards, and Evel Knievel toys... I may have walked in that way, but I walked out CHANGED FOREVER. On that glorious day, I had seen the greatest movie that would EVER be made... STAR WARS... This groundbreaking film from creator George Lucas TOTALLY changed my life... It absolutely blew me away, filling my heart with joy, stimulating my imagination, and kick-starting my love for cinema... That day was momentous for me, and I would never be the same again.. I will never forget it.. From the moment the 20th Century Fox fanfare and John Williams' theme blasted through the theatre speaker system, and "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" and that "Flash Gordon inspired" opening crawl came on the screen, and that gigantic Star Destroyer appeared, flying over my head, towering above me as I sat in my theatre seat... and kept going... and going...and going... and as the entire audience gasped with amazement... at that very moment, I was instantaneously mesmerized, transfixed, and transformed... and I was only 5 minutes into the movie... I still had 2 more hours to go! As I sat In amazement, I was terrified by a helmeted figure in black, Darth Vader... In fact, the whole audience "booed" him as he made his entrance.. .We knew NOTHING about the story yet, but just KNEW that this guy deserved a collective "booing"!... It was like we were watching a SILENT MOVIE!... And as the movie continued, I was thrilled by the heroic exploits of the dashing smuggler Han Solo and the feisty Princess Leia, and emboldened by the brave, heroic, idealistic actions of the farm boy turned hero of the galaxy, Luke Skywalker! And by the film's spectacular climax of the rebel assault on the Death Star (the greatest ending ever committed to celluloid), my heart was pounding, and my spirit was soaring... And I will NEVER forget the standing ovation of applause that erupted as the credits rolled... Everyone in that audience didn't know it yet, but we had all just been first-hand witnesses to cinematic HISTORY! This was NOT The Apple Dumpling Gang, Herbie Rides Again, Benji, The Bad News Bears, or any of the other 70's kiddie "dreck" that I was being subjected to at that time... No, this was something VERY DIFFERENT... I was beginning to come of age... Qf course, it wasn't ALL "dreck"... Even at that young age, I'd managed to see a small handful of very good and (for their time) very impressive big-screen spectacles in the theatre: Films such as: The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1974), At the Earth's Core (1976), Logan's Run (1976), and King Kong (1976)... but NOTHING could have prepared me (or the rest of the world) for the phenomenon that was STAR WARS and the change it would bring... the film that would propel an unprepared 1970's audience far beyond their wildest film-going expectations, and revolutionize the motion picture industry FOREVER. Words can never fully describe what it was like to be alive in the summer of 1977 during the peak height of "Star Wars Mania"... except to say that it was pure MAGIC. I became an instant fanatic... I saw the film 11 times in the movie theatre (which wasn't hard to do, as it stayed at our local theatre for an entire year!)... I sneaked my portable tape recorder into the theatre and audio-recorded the entire film so that I could listen to the adventure over and over in the comfort of my own bedroom (the ONLY way that I could relive it at home for 6 years until it finally came on TV!)... I filled up countless sketch pads with my crude drawings of all the creatures and spaceships... I dressed up in a make-shift Darth Vader costume for Halloween...I collected the action figures, the trading cards, the posters, the books, the model kits, and much more (and I STILL have all of that "stuff") ... I always wore my Star Wars T-shirt... I always drank out of my Star Wars cup... I listened to John Williams' Star Wars soundtrack album constantly, becoming a fan of symphonic and film score music... I watched "The Making of Star Wars" TV special, becoming fascinated by the way movies were made, even making a few myself with my Super-8 camera... I watched the Academy Awards for the very first time to see my favorite movie sweep the Oscars with 10 nominations and 7 wins... I even watched the now "infamous" Holiday Special in 1978 ... Lumpy... Itchy... Harvey Korman... Bea Arthur... Wookiee-ookiees... And I loved it... ("Hey, I was 11 when it aired!"). I will NEVER forget when my parents took me to the record store in 1977 to get the STAR WARS soundtrack by John Williams... We were driving home, and I was in the back seat of the car, looking at the LP... "Something is WRONG here", I said to myself... Well, it turned out that my parents had accidentally purchased the MECO DISCO VERSION! ... What did they know, after all? Obviously, we had to turn around and go back to the store! I love ALL THINGS Star Wars... Original Trilogy, Prequel Trilogy, Sequel Trilogy, spin-offs, TV shows, etc... But the 1977 film will ALWAYS be at the top of the list... And after 46 years (going on 47 years this May), I continue to love STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE more and more... It has aged like fine wine... It is my #1 favorite movie of all time, followed by my 2nd favorite movie of all time: The Empire Strikes Back, and my 3rd favorite movie of all time: Return of the Jedi...These 3 movies are flawless and perfect, collectively making up not only the greatest cinematic trilogy ever made... but the three greatest films of ANY kind ever made... and the greatest cinematic story ever told... I've had the great privilege of seeing (and in a few cases, meeting) many STAR WARS legends over the past years: George Lucas. Gary Kurtz, Irvin Kershner, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Peter Mathew, David Prowse, Billy Dee Williams, Ian McDiarmid, Hayden Christensen, John Williams, Ralph McQuarrie, Dennis Muren, Ben Burtt, and many other cast and crew members... The three biggest events that I was fortunate enough to attend were the 10th anniversary Star Wars Convention in Los Angeles (1987), the 35th anniversary Star Wars Celebration in Orlando (2012), and the 40th anniversary Star Wars Celebration in Orlando (2017)... Some of the happiest and most thrilling experiences of my life that I'll always cherish and not forget. Thank you so much, George Lucas, for taking me to your galaxy far, far away... Words can never express the utter happiness and joy that your six STAR WARS films have given me.., and continue to give me to this very day... And in particular, thank you so much for that life-altering experience that you gave me when I walked into that movie theatre at 10 years old on that glorious day in the summer of 1977 to see "that far-out space movie", aka: THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER MADE! ...It's odd to think a that a mere movie could have that kind of power to change one's life in such a profoundly positive way... but I'm proof that one can. As summed up perfectly in the film's teaser trailer narration: "It's the story of a boy, a girl, and a universe... A big, sprawling space saga of rebellion and romance... of heroes, and villains, and aliens from a 1,000 worlds... A spectacle, light years ahead of its time"... That says it all! It is the perfect story... the perfect film... a phenomenon... a bona fide classic.. a MASTERPIECE.. And just think, things could have gone VERY DIFFERENTLY and HORRIBLY WRONG that glorious day if I had instead gone to see some "awful piece of dreck" that was also playing in theatres at that same time... like Tentacles ("Yikes!")... or Viva Knievel ("Ouch!")... or Pete's Dragon ("Uhg!").

@ the#5 the original Millennium Falcon looked too similar to the spaceships of the sci-fi TV show SPACE 1999 . Also , the original novelization and the Marvel comic book version were based on the "workprint" version of the movie . It has Luke seeing the Star Destroyer battle and going to the teen hangout to meet Biggs scenes , and the original scenes of Han talking to Jabba the Hutt .

@14:44 46 year old mystery SOLVED1!! When I read the original novelization of Star Wars, I was always utterly confused by the description of the lightsaber when Ben shows it to Luke. It talked about a flat round disc or plate at one end and I just couldn’t figure out what the heck the author was talking about. And I knew later the handle was from the Graflex camera but until the pic at @14:44 I hadn’t seen one with the flash attached! This is obviously what the author was describing - presumably someone showed him a pic like this and said “that’s what the lightsaber is made from” but didn’t explain it was just the tube and the flash reflector wouldn’t be part of it! After all these years I finally know (or am 99% sure) what that was all about! :-)

I already knew all these things and a lot more. The one thing that you got wrong was the models of the X-Wings - they did have surviving models for both Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back as well as Return Of The Jedi. They had what were called "Pyro models" that were made to be blown up. They had two versions of these which were "Hero" and "Pyro" models for filming. The TIE Fighters also had the same versions for actions sequences. This way if something when wrong they had backups but usually they got the shots that they needed. As most were "one and done" while filming. And most people don't know that the opening scene was filmed backwards as the camera was "MOCO" or Motion Controlled by a computer. This was done so that they knew that the detail would be visible on the models and in frame and no blurry. The camera had to focus on both in sequential order. It was the side of these models that took so long to build that they were filmed last. "From Star Wars To Jedi" explained a lot of this. If you can find it I highly recommend it! But my most memorable part of the movies was the TOYS. The R2-D2 and C-3PO were the biggest hit when we were kids. I miss those days. They were the best years of my life.
