Aahh, the good, old R985 Wasp Jr..!! Dad was a corp. pilot, flew Twin Beeches, one a D-18, another the Super/E-18..both powered by these wonderful dependable radial engines. He was also a cert. A&E mechanic, worked on the Co. planes he flew. Helped him with my bro. number of times working on those Beeches!!

Man I love the sound of a radial... Nothing else compares to it.

Yessir, youve got that right!

Nothing like the sound of a Pratt & Whitney 450 radial at idle... "pooka da pooka da pooka da pooka" love it.

@R985wasp If the engine has been sitting along time, I use blow out plugs on the bottom jugs. If there is any oil in the jugs, it will drain out when the plugs are pulled, and the blow out plugs will clear out any oil in the intake system. If I have flown the engine recently, I pull it through several times, then turn it over with the starter a few blades, then turn on the mags. Remember to never turn a radial engine backwards as you can force oil into the intake system.

The R-2800s get all the press, but those 985s are certainly lovely engines!

They certainly were! Powered a lot of different aircraft..Even Earhart's Lockheed 10 Electra!!

Beautifull...

I think it's probably best to pull the engine through by hand in lieu of turning it over with the starter. Just my 2 cents. Its your engine.
