Thank you Titus. Friday is becoming a day I really look forward to spending time with you. I think you were fortunate not to be given strict directions at the Academy. Many of us, though grateful for the skills taught us, also had awful rows with tutors who were very stern and decreed their rules and vision had to be followed exactly. Consequently it has taken me far longer that it should have and much more struggle to learn that my own views were valid and worth pursuing. ( Especially as I'm an excellent copyist .) Your wisdom and warmth are a beacon that lights up my day. Salutations to you and all the other solitary painters out there .

It is a running day here in Montreal today, and i have passed a very good and cosy and...stimulate moment watching your video. In these very chocking time of suffering for so much people these moments are very precious and a recall that humans can still live simply, honnestly and sincerely share the beauty of life. What I really want to know is how you got so damn good with your greens man! Far out, so much nuance! I don’t think most casual viewers realise how accomplished a draughtsman you are either, and how important that foundation is to your final product.

Happy…well I guess it’s almost morning there now. Ah, I enjoyed taking out😂 a sheet of wc paper the other day. The 650gm Arches can take a lot so I get very surprised by what it can handle. They are definitely worth it especially for intense layering. For the subscriber question your answer it spot on! There are techniques that one can learn then brush mileage that is just like learning music and composing music. Monday might bring special surprises but as the saying goes “water doesn’t boil if it’s watched.” Thank you! 😊

You are perhaps the only Artist on you tube who admitted he made a mess. Of course, you then say you can get it better, with more work, and describe the reason the subject is difficult (too much of the subject in shadow). Your openness and excellent skills (developed over time) are so valuable to me - a struggling artist for 60 plus years. I know the pull art has for me and even though the struggle of accepting my efforts for what they are, or aren’t, I know I will never give up this love affair I have with art making. Thank you for sharing your process-it is always enlightening!

Beautiful words! We all continue to learn. Even the work of masters, dare I say isn’t always what it is cracked up to be, they struggled too or some let their skill turn them into something far less appealing. We are our worst critics but that also helps motivate us to celebrate other’s and our own accomplishments.❤

I’m looking forward to the next video to find out if this last painting turns out to be a great tasting dish or if it becomes the back of a beautiful painting. It really hit home when you talked about finding one’s world, learning how to paint that world. I’ve been doing watercolor long enough to just be dangerous. I don’t know my style. I love landscape painting, so I’ve figured that part out. But am I loose or photorealistic? I don’t feel I’m ether. But I frustrate myself in trying to find out where I am that’s between. And in that I only feel I know enough about watercolor to make myself dangerous in the sense that what I do doesn’t bring me to where I thought I was going as a painter. I feel many times that I’m the painter that hasn’t found his home, his place to be. I’m sorry this is so long, but I’ve seen much in what you talk about. And it’s somewhat healing to write these words down. Keep painting Titus & I’ll continue to watch, listen and learn. Be well Titus!

I absolutely LOVE this advice: find your own filter, show YOUR world. I've given those words some thought, especially because they resonate so much. After that initial 'high' I started thinking so what does that mean for me? My thoughts started focusing on subjects. But that's not it. Or not only it, at least not what I ended up with after some thought. And to me it's also not 'style'. For me, it's about the feeling I get when seeing a scene I want to paint, about the essence of that scene (the feeling) that I want to show. I see light and space and sometimes wonderment of something special. Anyway, the remark had me thinking, especially after having visited the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC last week and having been totally blown away by a Turner and Monet. Those paintings really resonated. Anyway, I digress. Once again, great remark (and great vid): gracias.

It’s so funny to hear how you started in watercolor. The first art class that I took was watercolor. Afterwards, I decide that I better learn to draw, and took basic drawing; later other classes. But, I remember how bored I was with the monochromatic world of drawing. Color is what was so enjoyable to me. Of course, looking back, it was important to get the basics too. As for copying, it has already been done, and probably better than I can ever do that style. Plus, my enjoyment comes from “the doing”, not with the finished product. So, I have taken your advise and paint every day. Thank you again Titus, for your wisdom and inspiration.

Wat leuk, die beker met een aquarel erop! Zo te zien wordt dat eerste werk een magistraal schilderij. Met een heerlijke zomersfeer. Dat doet goed, bij dit natte druilweer…. Prachtig zijn de vele lichtvlekjes, in de struiken en op het dak. Wat een mooie gedachte was dat: ‘jouw wereld is uniek’. Wat niet uniek is, dat zijn de methodes waarmee je je werkstukken maakt. Die methodes, maniertjes, die delen we met ons allen samen.’ Dat geeft zelfvertrouwen! Jouw potlood over het papier is een zoektocht. De zoektocht van onszelf in het leven. En je maakt je geen zorgen als het resultaat plotseling te donker lijkt. Morgen is alles opgedroogd, en wie weet kun je dan met succes verder. We zijn gebaat bij elke dag schilderen, inderdaad. Het positieve effect daarvan merkte ik in vakantietijd. Maar nu, in het normale leven, wil ik ook elke dag pianospelen, en schrijven. Ik moet elke dag koken en het sanitair reinigen. Er zijn correspondenties te voeren of mensen uit te nodigen. Ook loop ik elke dag zo’n 7 kilometer… Zijn de dagen lang genoeg? Waar een wil is, is een weg…

The thatched cottage painting was magical. Watching you paint it I thought it would be dark and rainy, especially the thatched roof, and at the end it turned out so full of light and magical!!! I am sure the second painting g will also turn out fine, I cannot wait now to watch the 2nd half !

You painted my dreamhouse! Beautiful! And you ended with a mess, your words, and i felt a shiver when you made it so dark but i know it looks totally different when dry. The way the top of the building all of a sudden becomes a brick building when it started drying is what still amazes me about the magic of watercolor. When i fist started I was so disappointed the next morning when all the colors of the first layers were so much lighter. Am learning myself how to paint and at first wanted to paint realistic yet from a photo. It was helpful in learning how to look at subject, lights, shadows, values yet it did not feel satisfying. It would be a copy of a good photo, but were was i in these paintings, what's my style? And the next question was how do i draw what i see in real life , like a person or a building or a landscape. Sometimes i would just catch it and most of the times i struggled getting it the way i wanted. So after buying a course that was not what i hoped for, i make drawings everywhere all the time. And watched some drawing video's, to understand perspectives etc. The last two years am drawing daily and painting 5 nights a week, just to practice. And the painting is playing, no references, just my imagination. Am beginning to understand watercolor better, experimenting with other media and tools and am so much loving the feeling. And my work, i barely show it to anybody, it feels like showing myself naked haha, afraid to hear it's looking terrible, but i love it. Am not watching painting tutorials anymore because it makes me want to paint in their way automatically. And then am disappointed with the results as well, because its not me. But watching you paint gave me some confidence, you are oke dealing with mess and critique of galerie-owners or clients. So now am getting better step by step, i think my coming out with my paintings will be a reality anytime soon. Thank you for all wise words and showing your proces, it's a real gift. I wondered how you feel about letting go/selling your work, are there paintings that you find hard to let go? Have a lovely weekend!

Thank you. No, I don't find it hard to let go paintings. Exept some favourites maybe. I like to work, to make paintings. I don't have to keep them, I make new ones every day

Thoroughly enjoyed and gained from this episode. Thank you. At the end of the video re the dark shadowy painting you said “not enough light.” And that struck a nerve. Something I’m thinking a lot about lately is light in my paintings. Color and light to be precise. How to paint shadows, dark watercolor paintings without painting mud.

It is amazing to me to see your paintings evolve beginning with the sketching until the “final” product, if there is ever a final to an art piece. I struggle so much to know when my art piece is finished; instinct I guess. Thanks for your opinions that are always so real.

Thanks Jo. We've been friens for 25 years now. It had become invalid and stays in the studio now as a table easel, but is actually is a field easel

34:22 , this comment reminded me of my own experiences with another university. There was very little useful instruction about process and production and FAR too much rambling about subjective ideas and theory. Apparently there are art schools today who have drawing classes that teach no drawing.

So, may I ask what kind of boards do you attach your watercolor paper to?

Hi, no I don't. I use the thickest paper I can find. It doesn't need to be stretched.

Your early 20% success rate is likely due to your adventurous use of big washes. I used to do colour illustrations with Dr. Martin's dyes. No time for accidents. Starting in my late 40s I did big watercolour paintings. But I never made those big washes like you do. I stayed loose within the confines of my drawn shapes, but took no risks. Maybe that's why I quit 15 years ago.

You title "What's the best way to learn watercolor painting?" Is too ambiguous to me. Does it imply that you already understand art, painting with a different medium, ...? I think a more thought provoking title might be: How do you use watercolor and it's nuances to implement your art? I make this comment because this is my paradox: I have proven artistic talent in woodworking, leather working, knife making and I want to do watercolor so badly, but I'm not a painter yet - therefor the paint medium I choose seems irrelevant. I have learned to mix and match color, do washes & glazes and I can mimic what is shown in a photo, but by no means am I a watercolor artist. So what do I need to learn to be a watercolor painter? Your open approach to sharing your work and insights is inspiring.

Everyone learns differently. There are specific wc techniques, not too many that help one to control the water to paint ratio, make layers and marks. Some learn certain ways that are more strict and don’t like it if one uses opaque white or black, some don’t mind either way. So discovering these things and putting them on paper takes time, not much because learning to blend color can be picked up quite fast. Drawing whether copied or sketched is how we learn. That’s a start and where one takes their practicing is up to each individual because the sky is the limit. In just a short time one can pick up techniques. Technique classes are everywhere but there are instructors that Titus was referring to that teach their “own” style and that is what one pays for and it may not be something that you prefer. I remember feeling like I was going to wreck my paper at first. Now if it happens, well it’s a pleasure. Since you enjoy learning that is what it is about. Just enjoy!😊

The biggest lesson I ever learned as a painter (and this is especially true of watercolour) is that sometimes a rag is better than a brush. Aside from that get some heavy paper, a box of colours and some brushes and water and have at it, you will soon learn your way around the medium. Learn the colour wheel, and how to mix a grey out of harmonic colours: James Gurney has an excellent book on colour and light if realism is your jam. The rest is drawing, and that’s a lifetime’s work right there. It may seem like the least of his talents but Titus here is a master draughtsman, and that’s really the foundation of all painting and where I would start, drawing from life rather than just copying images that are already two dimensional. Gotta learn to crawl before you walk kind of thing.
