Thank you for taking me along for a small part of your outing! I loved it! I've got a stack of back problems that prevent me from enjoying to many adventures any more but was able to sit in on a riffle hunt with my 10 year old girl where she tagged a nice eight point whitetail! That was pretty awesome. I just picked up a CVA Mountain rifle in .45. It’s slow twist for round ball. Would love to drop an animal with it. I like your bp gun. Very nice! I’m a bit of a smoke pole addict and can think of no other way...... Thanks for sharing your video.

Great video, Nice Cow. I just started getting into traditional Muzzleloaders, My father & I, bought a pair of Pietta 1858 Remington New Army 44 Revolvers a few months ago. I got bit by the bug, & just bought a new, Investarms Bridger Hawken, 50cal percussion for myself, & I cought the tail end of a auction on GunBroker, for a like new condition Traditions Hawken Woodsman 50cal percussion, nobody bid on it, so I won the auction for the minimum bid $149. After shipping & taxes it was $195. I gave the Traditions Hawken to my father. I can't wait until Idaho hunting season this fall, we plan on going after Deer, Elk, & Bear, this year with our smokepoles.

Would have been better off buying flintlocks, unless you had a huge stash of caps before hand, 12c a piece is ridiculous, even 209 primers are half that

What do you size your bullet to? I also have a fast twist 45 caliber muzzleloader that I'm trying to find a load for.

My Lyman 330gr HP mold for my 45-70, drops them at 458, I normally don't size, I just hand lube with a BP lube. A 45 BP barrel should be .454" One good smack with a short starter and you have a perfect fit.

*Thank you for sharing part of your hunt and your 45 caliber hunting load... I might hunt with a TC Hawken .45 this year and was unsure what the correct or optimal amount of powder would be. Since your 45 took an ELK, mine should have no trouble with midsized midwestern/ eastern whitetail deer. Where legal I might try 60-75 {or maybe 80} grains by volume or "up to" a 45-70 case full of FFFg DuPont black powder with three 128 grain .440" pillow ticking patched round balls... 3 balls @ 128 each = 384 grains . Hey, That comes in just under 400 grains of lead. Seems like it might work. I doubt if anyone has shot such a load in recent decades.*

This rifle sports a 1/20" twist barrel, made for shooting bullets, not balls. Single RBs on top of 80-100 gr. will not group. The same powder charge behind two patched RBs shoots dead on as my 330+ gr HP. with a 2 1/2 - 3" spread. I think S.D. law says muzzle loader with a single projectile. So if you have a fast twist, or if it just works, and it's legal, Give it hell, sounds like fun.

@@jmartin9059I have the same CVA .45 Mountain Rifle that you've got with that 1/66 twist. It shoots .440" roundballs great, BUT it's very accurate with the old T/C Maxi-Ball bullets that do work really well with the slow twist rifling. With 60 grains of FFG Goex and those Maxi-Balls, I'm getting 1 inch groups at 50 yards with that Mountain Rifle. Track of the Wolf sells the Maxi-Balls that I buy. You just need to lube them and I use T/C Bore Butter, then put the bullets after their lubed into the freezer a day or so before I go out hunting to harden the lube up some and take them out the night before.

@@Bayan1905 TC made a number of NOT 1:66. If only it were 1:66 , the patches would survive a full speed single round ball load. A goodly number of Thompson Center were 1:48" Hawken 'style' back when they made it, at all. So, a single patched round ball with a full maximum charge might 'rip up' or 'rip through' the patch. One of the few solutions: 'Multiple round balls' over a lighter or moderate amount charge of powder allows the patches to survive the medium 1:48 twist rate, and can allow the accuracy to migrate into 'tolerable' zone. 1:48 twist rate is NOT ideal... and, with careful load choices can become tolerable. The Sabots, Minie' balls, Hollow base conical, or Maxi ball, or B.O.R. Lock MZ might be some other choices.... in 50 cal. That stuff, for the 45 ? ..not widely available.

I truly enjoyed this and another video you did for hunting elk. Muzzleloaders in .45 caliber have always been my favorite. I have 3-4 of them and a T/C Pennsylvania Hunter in .50 caliber that I haven't shot yet. Here in southern California my buddies always scoffed at my preference for the .45 but seeing you down Elk with one affirms my faith in the power and usefulness of it! Pushing 70 now and disabled my hunting days are pretty much over, hell just finding a shooting range within a reasonable distance has gotten to be ridiculous as many of the ranges I used have been closed down, mostly because of developers forcing their way into the area where the ranges were. Okay, enough of the whining! I want to thank you for allowing me and the rest of us to come along on your adventures. Please continue to video and shoot so we can live through you in hunting these beautiful areas of our country! I "liked" and subbed! p.s. I picked up a Thompson Center Scout pistol, .45 caliber, that can safely take 100 grains of Goex FFg and is a huge pistol. It's in near factory new condition and I haven't shot it yet but I would be willing to loan it to you for a hunt or two, (you do have to give it back though). Let me know! Thanks again!!!!!

Today's rage in muzzle-loader hunting is the 209 inline,50 cal. A 50 cal. sabot with a 44-45 cal bullet. Yep, they all think they are all shooting a BIG 50.

Enjoyed the video. Im sitting in the deer blind now waiting for Bambi. Too warm here in eastern iowa also. My brother shot a nice 8 point a week ago during shotgun season. I didn't fire a shot. It's muzzle loader season now and I can use a 357 handgun. I should go home and make ratrod videos. What do ya think..

Most likely triple K. I asked because I have one and its been ripping at the top. The suede seems cheap, and once it starts ripping, theres no stopping it.

What a great hunt I no longer want to my home state of Michigan. Because I always felt the hunting was a personal intimate decision if you want to shoot a spike or hold out for an 8-point it's your decision. I'm in it for the meat a lot of people aren't for this trophy aspect of it.

Awesome. On one of your other videos you commented on how gamy the meat was on a couple of elk you shot. Beautiful country there. My wife and I visited South Dakota last fall and were very impressed by the scenery and the people.

I'd never use a .45 on elk, regardless if you took one with it or not for the very reason of not putting out a blood trail. A .50 would be bare minimum on elk. I always tote my .54 and never have any problem with an entrance and exit wound and blood trail. I have helped other hunters trail elk that they have shot with a .45 (not from our camp) and we never found the elk. There wasn't any snow on the ground, which could have helped.

You didn't say, so I imagine you are talking a .54 round baller. You think your 250gr ball is more lethal than my 340gr pure lead hand cast hollow point? You need do do a little research. As much as I love my 1-60" twist 54, it can't hold a candle to my 1-20" twist 45 when it comes to killing.

sure... the 45/70 cartridge rifles shooting the same boolets at the same velocity dont harvest big game? Big difference between round ball and a slug.... like any rifle the boolet itself needs chosen for the game. Your ignorance is showing!

It sure is. A 45 with a fast twist is not very common, this one was built some where in Minnersota. You could contract with a builder to make you one or you can order a box full of parts and build it yourself.
