44932 blasts through the cold on the first ‘Cumbrian Mountain Express’ of 2023 - 21/1/23
In a what can only be described as perfect conditions, Stanier Black 5 44932 kick started the mainline steam program for 2023 with the first of the years ‘Cumbrian Mountain Express’s.
Running from Manchester Victoria, the tour would make it’s way through Lancashire to Blackburn and along the popular route to Hellifield, before taking on the Long Drag up the Settle & Carlisle line. After a break in Carlisle, the tour returned to Manchester via Shap, dropping off steam at Carnforth.
On what was only it’s second outing post overhaul, 44932 created a terrific atmosphere for the cameras throughout the day. With plenty of chances to catch the 5 on the outward run, and glorious sunshine it was all in all a fantastic day. Hope you enjoy!

From Australia, I changed trains at Hellifield a few short months ago, and stood on the platform for half an hour plus, only seeing a (quarry products?) train that was overtaken by mine. Great footage: atmospheric. Very well filmed. I'll be in UK (and Europe) later in 2023 again.

Brrrr! Bet you wound up freezing your shoes and socks off to capture this. I was hoping to see a different steamy to Britannia somewhere along the line, so thanks for showing me the Black 5.
Nicely captured, didn't even know this was due and being up the road from here they usually wake me up as they blast through Farnworth tunnel. Whats the best web site to find out when these are due up this way?
After that wonderful steam mileage, it must have been an anticlimax like coitus interruptus for the passengers to be dragged home by that dirty box on wheels thing at the end of it.
