You two are the most amazing couple. No job is to big for you to undertake. That tree is massive and that root ball is gigantic. You were so right when you were talking about the power of nature….especially wind and water. That was some storm. Must have been gale force winds. So glad you are both safe. Hope you get some relief with your back Scott.

Regardless how sedate or physically demanding a background, one should always take a few moments to do some stretching exercises before undertaking any activity. The heat generated along with the stretching of muscles should prevent many tissue injuries. May you have a speedy stress-free recovery.

I have been practicing yoga for 42 years. I have seen many people look to yoga to help their issues and seen them succeed. One particular lady came to the class with sciatic nerve pain, saying she had been to so many doctors and physio therapist and nobody had helped her, she didn't want to spend her life on pain killers (as it masks the pain she wanted to fix the root cause) during one class she was doing a particular pose and there was a pop, everyone heard it....from that moment on she has not had ANY sciatic pain. I know you were saying this is something else but it maybe worth a try, you don't have to be bendy or super fit, simple poses to start can make the world of difference, yoga can improve almost anything.... I wish you well soon.

I have battled sciatica since my 20’s and I always pushed through it. It got to a point they had to do surgery. The surgeon nicked my spine and lost all feeling on my entire left side. Since I have been there I can certainly tell you any anti- inflammatory works. This ended my entire outdoorsman life that I throughly enjoyed. I love this channel because it brings me back to the life that I wanted to lead. Thank you for your content. ❤❤

Use branches to shore up the boggy ground, cut blocks out of tree, to the depth of saw, then a slightly smaller block and work through the tree. Not as quick as a straight cut through but still very doable when you're physically able.

Feeling your pain...literally, Scott. Few years back, I attempted chiropractic intervention. The last one, like straw, did me in. Doctor told me it was "all in your head" until a MRI was done. Shocked. He actually apologized. Then I was transferred to larger hospital where they inserted a 'clamp'. Even driving made me fearful that winter. Seems as I get older, I don't feel so tough. Hope the weather improves and you feel better soon. Hey, I won't fuss if you have a few beers to relax those muscles & nerves

Scott, my back did exactly the same thing a couple of winters back - right out of nowhere - and I struggled with it for a couple of months until I was forced to climb down some oversized steps at a Mayan ruin in Mexico. I had help, and a lot of hand-holding, but the exaggerated steps (about hip-height) stretched something out and released whatever nerve was pinched. I was amazed and so relieved! Good luck to you - I sympathize completely!

Cedar, the smell in the wee Bothy would be amazing! Line your cupboards and the loo area. As a soft wood, easy to cut and mill but not as firewood, leaves too much residue in the lum, potential for a fire you don't want. By the way, if you find that your chain saw, even with shims can't cut right entirely around, you can source in the UK a 36" cross-cut handsaw, one hand or two hands to finish the slab off.

I feel your pain man, I have the same back problems.. and also through years of drumming sitting on cheap stools.. twisting and stuff. I last threw my back in February when I twisted to grab my phone while in Englandshire.. then spent the next two days driving home to Orkney. That really buggered it and I had to used a bl**dy Zimmer frame for five weeks. (I'm only 55) Its still not right and now we're in July.

Oh my, be careful with your back. I felt your pain as I’m just started to have some relief from a back flare up that started after the new year’s. (So many Nurses like me, have bad backs) . I just started watching your channel so I don’t what your hot water situation is but a nice hot towel wrung out some and covered by a thin towel makes a nice warm wrap/heating pad for your back when you have to improvise. I live in Northern California and with the crazy rains and atmospheric river rains we’ve been having so many trees and big ones have fallen. Just the other day a tree fell in Golden Gate Park and damaged 4 cars and injured 2 people. Take Care and I know you guys are trying to be as safe as you can.

Find some old fishing net to help with this sort of temporary repair. It will flex right around the tree and you can tie it up or whatever, because it's so light compared to wire. Old gillnet is perfect. tie tags on it so the deer can see it,though.

Ohhh I bet that tree would make some nice lumber! Find a sawmill to cut that up for lumber because I bet that would make a fair amount of very good lumber for house projects.

Yes, I was wondering how many beautiful boards (plus a mantelpiece?) could be cut from a cedar tree that size. I'll bet there's a youtube video on a diy sawmill that would qualify as an "island fix."

  • @piperlynne1

@@Edje001 There are lots of people who have portable sawmills that will come to you and cut your wood up for a fee. Or you can buy a jig thing to use with your chainsaw to cut up rough lumber. Or you could sell the tree to someone who would like to make something from the lumber. Cedar does not make the best firewood but is excellent for outside projects like fences, benches, flower boxes, etc, as it is rot resistant.

That'd be my inclination normally too, but the remoteness of the location no doubt would pose some logistical barriers to getting it to the nearest mill. Even getting it to the shore could be a real challenge. Heck even if they had their own small sawmill setup already at the property the bulk of that trunk would likely be too large for it.

Sciatica is the worst! I've seen 2 surgeons and both said no to surgery. Then, 4 years ago, I had rotator cuff surgery. Friends told me I needed a recliner to sleep in during recovery. The first night I slept in the recliner, the next morning, I had NO sciatic pain. If it flares up, I sleep in the recliner and I have overnight relief.

Hats off to you both for getting that fence up in good time despite the conditions.Ive done a good share of stock fencing when I volunteered for a countryside park. We had to walk a section of fence every day, but we had hacked out a path with bill hooks so we didnt have as many obsticles as you currently do. Is it worth taking a mattock to level off some of the worst ankle-breaking gullies? Hope your back is better Scott.
