The big blue boat had two problems..it was too long and it was empty. Once the majority of the hull was through the gate and in the higher water above the dam, this lifted the rear of the boat and thus its propeller higher in the water so it lost its ability to push the boat.

exactly, i was thinking the same!! beside that, they build the gates to narrow, so the current is extremely strong!

So all that boat need is a ballast? The captain could pump some water into the hull and try again I guess.

@@rorymunroe3771 No, it was at full throttle the whole time. The reason the engine RPM increased at the end of each run is like @ThomasGeorge said, the propeller was partially lifted out of the water.
So I see that with the biggest barges as the barge almost gets through it’s blocking most of the flow and the velocity of the water increases much faster than it was without the barge in there. Great fluid dynamics lesson here for the physics majors. The barge creates its own Venturi.

The reason is, its wider, allowing a lot less flow to bypass the hull. It's not the engine power.... its the resistance.

As it goes through the damn lock his boat is so light at the back end when the boat is on the upper part of the swell his prop comes out of the water too much so we can't get forward momentum that's where he loses it if he keeps some weight in the back of the boat it probably help

I think when the propeller is in action it creates a high velocity flow and a low pressure at the neck thus pushing more water to flow carrying away the barge backwards.

One could of course agree with another boat that the front boat pulls the rear one through the dam gate with a long line. But that doesn't seem intentional.
खरंच खूप कठीण काम आहे. पण जिगरबाज आहेत ही माणसं
Интересный случай, когда пустая баржа с мощным двигателем не могла несколько раз пройти плотину против течения! 😂 Проблема была в том, что пустая, длинная баржа имела не большую осадку и при выходе большей части баржи на чистую воду перед плотиной, корма баржи находилась ещё в створе плотины. Но, за счет большого перепада потока воды перед плотиной и за ней, гребной винт судна оказывался, как бы в подвешенном состоянии в непосредственной близости от поверхности воды. В определенный момент данная ситуация приводила к кавитация гребного винта, и как следствие резкому уменьшению тяги. То, что гребной винт переходил в режим кавитации, было слышно, как двигатель резко набирал обороты!!!
