When Hamilton sung “Its quiet uptown” in the beginning it was to show what his headspace was during the election. He was completely heartbroken about Philips death and that was all he could think about. It’s sad but a nice way of showing he was still mourning.

When Burr and Hamilton talk to each other they reverse their normal rhythm. Usually Burr comes in a bit late on the beat and Hamilton early, Burr is so early a few times he's almost late for the previous beat, and Hamilton is far behind a few times. It's a SUPER neat device to emphasize Burr's nervous energy so far outside his comfort zone, and Hamilton being completely drained by, you know, everything.

The fact that a runner up would automatically become the Vice President was indeed changed during Jefferson’s administration. The process for this was added as the 12th amendment to the US Constitution. 😁

I am in no way a historic scholar, so please excuse any errors. Let’s focus on the 1960s forward. Vice Presidents in modern times are chosen strategically by the presidential candidate for what they can “add” to their candidacy, and therefore they are chosen before any elections and will campaign together. In the 60’s Kennedy chose Lyndon B Johnson as his VP because he felt that LBJ would help him win in the south, as Kennedy was the first Catholic presidential candidate and his northeastern upbringing/politics didn’t mesh well with southern voters. (LBJ was a senator from Texas.) This strategy worked, Kennedy won, but as a direct result of JFK’s assassination, and the immediate and necessary transfer of power to LBJ, making him president upon JFK’s death, Congress proposed the need for better clarification about the Vice Presidency and how it worked. This created the 25th amendment to the Constitution. It better spelled out the process of how power transfers worked for a VP. Unforeseen at the time it was ratified (1967) this amendment became VERY important because Nixon’s VP (Agnew) resigned, and Gerald Ford was voted by Congress to replace him as VP - then Nixon resigned his presidency, and under this amendment Ford became the president. (Ford is the only president that was not elected by “the people” in any way - not as VP as not as president.) Also important, the 25th amendment spelled out the process for a temporary transfer of power to the Vice President, which was historically used after the attempted assignation of Ronald Reagan. After being shot, Reagan used this to temporarily transfer power, to his VP, George Bush, while he was in surgery to have the bullet removed. (This was important because America was in the middle of “the Cold War.”) Currently a very hot topic is the news is Joe Biden and his search for who he will choose as his VP. Once his choice is vetted and selected, they will run as a team for the Democratic Party for the 2020 election. If you are still awake, thank you for reading and being interested. 😁

After John Adams term everyone realized Hamilton was basically correct in what he printed about John Adams at the beginning of his term and everyone wanted his opinion about who to vote for next because of it. Plus he was a substantial figure in the public eye for everything he’d done in the war and for the government.

  • @MrAntonla
    @MrAntonla4 жыл бұрын

Actually, it was a bit more complicated than portrayed in Hamilton. The Election of 1800 was the first election where presidential candidates had a running mate. Incumbent president John Adams was the presidential candidate of the Federalist Party who chose Charles C. Pinckney as his running mate. The Democratic-Republican party chose incumbent vice president Thomas Jefferson as their presidential candidate with Aaron Burr as his running mate. Each elector cast to ballots with no differenciation between the ballot for president and the ballot for vice president. Thus, each party had a plan for one of of their electors to vote for another person on one of his ballots to allow the presidential candidate to get one more electoral vote than the vice presidentiel candidate. The Democratic-Republican plan failed, however, and each of their electors voted for both Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, which caused a tie in the Electoral Collage. When the Electoral Collage can't decide on the president, it is up to the House of Representatives to break the tie, which eventually happened after 36 ballots! Now, Aaron Burr did become Vice President, but the rules were changed in 1804, when the requiered 3/4th majority of the state legislatures ratified the 12th ammendment, where it is decided that every elector casts a vote for President and a vote for Vice President

Burr did finish out his term of course, the rules were changed at the end of Jefferson’s first term as you pointed out. (Also that election didn’t cause the duel as the play makes it seem for the sake of saving time, it was when Burr attempted to run for governor of New York and Hamilton’s negative opinion of him cost him the election for that)

Yeah it didn't really happen this way. It wasn't up to Hamilton to decide for the Presidency for this race, although it was a tie. He did however publicly tell people not to vote for Burr when Burr ran for Governor of New York. So Burr lost and that's when he called out Hamilton to duel. So they just kind of took that part of history and combined it with the Presidency because as a story it sounds better.

It came down to a Federalist representative from Delaware who switched his vote to Jefferson on like the 40th ballot and who took Hamilton's advice to vote for Jefferson. The unrealistic part is that Hamilton didn't dramatically withhold his opinion until the last minute, he was dead set against Burr from the minute they realized the Electoral college was a tie, calling him amoral and the most dangerous man in America. Burr kinda played into that characterization by leading a privately recruited army to conquer Mexico after killing Hamilton.

@Paula C Some historians are full of shit. There's reams and reams of letters, papers, pamphlets, newspaper articles written **in the day** that mentions what they all did and said, and what they were all accused of doing and saying. There is no way that if Hamilton had made such an accusation that EVERYBODY would have been silent on it. Especially with how nasty the political climate was in 1800. And it was *really* nasty. If Hamilton had hinted at any such incestuous relationship, Burr's enemies would have leapt on the information and flooded the papers with it. And Hamilton's enemies would have leapt on the chance to call him a perverse liar. So no. There's no evidence of any such accusation by Hamilton of Burr committing incest.

StormWolf Records back then weren’t as good as you’re portraying. For instance historians can’t agree on whether Burr was trying to lead an exposition to conquer Mexico even after a high profile treason trial. Not saying we know it happened, just that there’s no saying definitive records would’ve survived if it had.

But like, you can see from the starting of the play that Hamilton valued action and actually making decisions, and while I wouldn't say that Burr didn't, his consant 'Talk Less, Smile More' did indeed show that you didn't really know where he stood on most things. And that? Is really dangerous, especiall in politics. You can't have a lack of transparency if you want to lead, so I really think that Hamilton made the right call (Even if his word wasn't actually the be all end all)

After the Reynolds Affair, Hamilton was borderline disgraced in the public eye. Most voters couldn’t have cared less about what he thought. However, he still held sway over the Federalist Party delegates, many of whom were considering casting their lot with Burr. The song gets Hamilton’s mindset right: he would rather have someone win whose principles he disagreed with as opposed to someone who didn’t have any at all. As such, Hamilton used what influence he had to push the delegates to Jefferson.

I don't think they've been truly hating him ever since It's quiet uptown. When Hamilton had problems before, they were watching it with a stone face, because his problems were his own fault (to be fair, they were completely right). When Hamilton mourned his son in It's quiet uptown, Jane, who previously felt no compassion for him, had tears in her eyes from the very beginning. Perhaps his mourning showed them that despite his lowest moment, he truly loved his family; perhaps they noticed how he repented for his misdeed and finally changed; I don't know if it was one of these or something else, but I am sure they have at the very least started to make peace with him.

"That's a kind of thing of respect." and yet Alexander had no problem slandering Burr. Endorsing Jefferson isn't the misdeed that Burr was upset about. He slandered Burr, and from the first letter all the way to Weehawken, Alexander could've saved himself. He could've apologized, or, since he clearly was incapable of that, he could've just not shown up for the duel. He caused his own death.

They kind of outlined it in the song but it happened slightly different in real life. Firstly, Philip hadn’t died yet but Hamilton was already out of the lime light a bit before the actual 1800 election (they combined the 1800 and 1804 election in the musical). Hamilton was a federalist, at the time of the election the Federalist Party didn’t really have a good candidate to run “John Adams shat the bed and he’s in traction”, lyric explains this. John Adams was the incumbent president but a lot of people did not like his term. So he “shat the bed”. Then the other major player ie, still around at least in terms to maybe get a federalist nomination Instead of John Adams was Hamilton “who was missing in action”. Hamilton had a party following him but definitely could not run as he was dealing with the fallout from the Reynolds plamphets still. So Jefferson (the Main leader of the democratic republicans) was really only facing burr, as burr who was meant to be running as a Vice President candidate tried to use a loophole which allowed a vice candidate who tied (really need to look up I can’t explain) to become president. All in all it came down to a delegates vote and really down to who the federalists like better. As one of the only leading federalists left, Hamilton pushed the party to choose Jefferson instead of burr. Now in the election of 1804, burr who was Vice President for Jefferson at the time was clearly not going to be running with Jefferson for his re-election campaign, had become disgraced with his party (democratic republicans who were led by Jefferson who hated burr) decided to switch back to being a federalist to try to run for governor of New York to sort of reset his political career. Hamilton, who at the time was almost completely removed from political, still had enough favor that his continued disapproval with burrs politics and choices of switching parties back and forth, “blocked” him again by stating his opinion to friends who asked him. This leads up to the next song. So I will wait to continue till then. But note, even with all this political back and forth Hamilton and burr probably would have still considered each other friends. They had known each other for at least 20+ years (when they first met is a bit a mystery), worked together. It’s a sort of “I don’t agree with everything you do” but I still want you to have a good life friendship.

Jefferson wasn't the first president to make a change as drastic as that. The night before Jefferson took office, John Adams commissioned Federalist party members as judges throughout the country. Obviously, Jefferson was pissed. I know that the two were frenemies, but I don't know how things were between the two after that. I just read something I was not aware of until now. " In the ensuing election, *_vice presidential candidate Hamilton_* had denounced President Adams as fundamentally unfit for the office, and this faction of high Federalists tried to place Hamilton ahead of the nominal presidential candidate in the election (as was possible in the days before the 12th Amendment)." Hamilton was a VP candidate???? Edit: Another thing that I found surprising when I first learned it was that the two terms limit wasn't always actually an enforced rule, and more of a tradition. Idk how long after FDR served three that it was turned into law.

Burr was Jefferson's Vice President for the first term, per the original rules, but what Jefferson means in this song by "We can change that,... cuz I'm the President." is that the 12th amendment that got rid of that rule and allowed the candidates to pick their own VP was passed in 1804 after going through multiple approvals under Jefferson's presidency. In other words, the song just gives a simplified and dramatized version of how that rule was changed.

FDR's first vice-president, apparently, said that the "Vice-presidency isn't worth a bucket of warm spit." (John Nance Garner. "Jefferson has beliefs, Burr has none," even if that were accurate, (which it isn't, he just wasn't stupid enough to make his values explicitly known, because that is how you lose debates, making your position clear and easy to attack) that is not a justification to endorse a man whose ideal vision for the future of the nation is antithetical to your morality. If you needed a babysitter for your kid, and you had to choose between either Charles Manson, a man that embodied evil, or a random person that you have no way of knowing who they will be, would you choose the murderer, or would you decide that since while there are terrible people in the world, a lot of people are good, so the odds of getting someone as bad as Manson are statistically slim? If you chose Manson, please don't have kids.

It feels weird to hear Jefferson sing "to get Hamilton on *your* side," since it's his side. Am I the only one that gets bothered by that? Damn OCD...

That's how I'd was back then because political parties weren't around until mid Washington administration
