41.4 QuadDeck ICFs for the Mezzanine Roof

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Still waiting on the Gunite crew (they are fully booked but we are hoping someone cancels), so I decided to put up the quad deck for the Mezzanine and ask the gunite crew to pump concrete for that too.

    Catching up on some missed videos, great information here. And interestingly enough, this one had good sound level vs some others of yours I've previously watched and commented on just days ago... Same equipment / conditions on my end.

    Problem is that it is the same equipment on my end too, at least for the newer ones.

    I watched almost all of your videos and would love to get more information. My wife and I are Planning on building an underground home in Tennessee. the house I have designed (I'm a Draftsman) is closer to a hobbit hole but bigger, but the main construction is gunite/ shotcrete with rebar reinforcement. Please contact me back I have a lot of questions about how your house is being constructed and the cost associated with the construction. thanks for putting all this valuable information up for all to see it have helped me with my design.

    It is funny how many “pros” are rather inexperienced themselves especially if the project is a little more bespoke.

  • @SimonHomeintheEarth

    @SimonHomeintheEarth

    I also expected them to have professional equipment, show up with the right supplies, etc. Nope, they had me buy all the supplies (including wood screws for drilling into the steel reinforcement which really proved to me that they were not pros) and just used very basic tools and ordinary scaffolding. Actually, my scaffolding was better than theirs. The fact that things were not all square really threw them for a loop (although they had pictures and plans before agreeing to come out). Anyway, don't mean to be too hard on them, just saying this stuff can be installed without any special training or specialized equipment. It is one of the easiest things we have done so far.

    Hello!! Great videos!! Could you please give me suggestion if I should use Quad deck instead of conventional flooring ? I am going to have radiant heat and all of my exterior walls will be quad lock ICF. Will it be more expensive than the conventional flooring? Please guide. Thanks.

  • @SimonHomeintheEarth

    @SimonHomeintheEarth

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, I think it probably was more expensive than wood joists would have been, but that could partially be because my house was round. If you are building with rectangles, it may be much cheaper because there is less waste and much less effort to lay the pieces. I can't really compare costs directly because I didn't get a quote for a more traditional floor, maybe you can get quotes for both methods and let us know. For sure, quad deck is better for radiant heat than any sort of traditional wood floor would be. It also integrates well with ICF construction.

    What's a radonvent?

  • @TheKajunkat

    @TheKajunkat

    4 жыл бұрын

    Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. The vents are to allow it to escape so it doesn't concentrate and cause health problems later.

  • @SimonHomeintheEarth

    @SimonHomeintheEarth

    4 жыл бұрын

    TheKajunkat is correct, but I'll add that radon vents are a required part of building code, even in parts of the country that don't have much radon in the ground. Many people incorrectly assume that living underground means you will have more radon problems (closer to the source?), but really proper ventilation is the solution to radon in the home, above or below ground.

  • @SimonHomeintheEarth

    @SimonHomeintheEarth

    Honestly, I think there will be two sets of failure... The early ones due to my screwups, and I'll need to deal with those pretty soon as I work out the kinks and learn the lessons, and then the structural ones 500 years from now ;) Hopefully, I'll get most of my mistakes figured out and into a book to help others avoid them.

    Completely baffled why anyone would build such a monstrosity? Foam and concrete - two single worst material choices for a 'green' home. Smh.

  • @SimonHomeintheEarth

    @SimonHomeintheEarth

    Worst choices why? They last a long time, won't rot, retain energy, etc. Make an argument based on reasoning. Shaking your head is meaningless to me. All your negative comments on my videos just make you seem like a grumpy old man who needs a hug. I hope you get one soon.
