I had a 63 Catalina with the 389 when I was in high school. It was my dads daily driver. Loved that car. I built it up with junk yard parts until I traded for a Road Runner. I miss the days when you could buy motors for 150 dollars and swap out parts without having to deal with emissions and engine computers. A tach and dwell meter and a timing light were as complicated as it got.

I remember those days, In 1960, I bought a new 283 cu 315 hp Corvette FI short block for $215, in 62 I bought a new 327 cu 360 hp short block for $245. You could have a great time on the street with either of those engines in a 57 chevy.

My dad had a '63 Catalina with a 389 2 barrel. It had a slim jim transmission. It had a quarky starting. If you let the car drift to 5mph. & then floor it. The car would go like a rocket. The only thing I can figure is that the tork converter had vanes that changed angles

Late sixties early seventies, my city had the Trading Post newspaper. The "auto parts" section usually two WHOLE PAGES. Engines and parts, Intakes $30 and up, Four barrels $25 and up, Headers, trannies, rearends, just about anything. And, what you couldn't find there... the junkyards had. For a couple hundred bucks, you could turn a 327 two barrel single exhaust Impala into a real burner. Yeah... the old days. EVERY boy in school knew about cars. Now... put a "chip" in it is about ALL they know.

Al Loy... Let me try to clear the air a little bit ... The two cars on the video are good friends, they have been pairing off for a number of years. At this time 2012 , the guy in the 409 was 65 years old , the fellow in the Pontiac was 71 .. Both cars are basically stock street motors , neither car has been stroked and so on, both 4 speed, cam headers and slicks and that is it. So this day the guy in the Pontiac says... To the 09 guy, hey man why don't you spot me a light or two since I've never beaten you? The 09 guy says you know what? Today is your lucky day, cause I'm going to give you the whole Tree !!!!! And with a slipping clutch, I still got him on the Big End ... I'm the owner and driver of the 409 ! Let me finish with this in mind...both of these cars run in stock form, ETs that were consistent with the early to mid 60's.

The 409er really an incredible shifting technique you can see the car popping every time he does a power shift...and 2nd to 3rd is silky smooth a difficult shift for many "young" racers who miss shift often unless they use a straight gate...but as said here everything is stock! And so that 409 "wow, through 4th gear that's a fast car!!!And a slipping clutch???Both cars are just beautiful-loud!!!

freakineagle, great story. Thx for sharing it. I'm 63 now, 2021. My first car was a 64 Impala SS, 327 4 barrel, 2 speed Powerglide tranny. Got it in 73, $575 in perfect condition from the original owner. It wasn't a 409, but it was quick for such a heavy car. I was out running every 350 that Olds or Pontiac could throw at me. Outran Boss 302 Mustangs and 351 Cleveland's. 37 years later and I still miss my car. I often wonder what became of her, whether she died a violent death in some crash, rusted away in some heartless back yard, or hopefully still out there making some old man happy. All that just to say, man I really your car!

Gtx 440 six pack. 65 galaxy with 427. 64 1/2 mustang with 289hp. I was only 12 and that's what I remember. They were always in trouble. A 39 chevy coup they built a house around it. That's right. It was inside a house in front room. The house was torn down and my brother has the car. In the 1970's they had 30 cars laying around grandma's yard on the farm. Chevy impala and chevelle's. Parts all over the place. My uncle sold me a 65 impala for $25. One small dent. It smoked but ran. Then the county told grandma to get rid of the cars. They all went for junk.

Clark Kent etc. A close friend had a 63 Catalina like the one shown. It was 421 cu. in and 370 h.p. They had a higher hp options as they had a lightweight aluminum front end car and also swiss cheese frame cars. Union Park Pontiac ran one of the latter. their dealership is like 5 blocks from my home. Anyway , growing up in the era in question and running a 406 Galaxie that never lost to a 409 on the street and only a couple times at the track , the 409 myth continues. there were way more 409's than the big block pontiacs and fords . Whenever you play the numbers game , its just the law of averages that many of the hottest cars are campaigned by dealerships that sold them, and had some of the best drivers / mechanics. When the 413 / 426 Mopars arrived and make no mistake , they kicked most everyone's asses..... guys jumped on the Mopar bandwagon. When Ford started backing dealers / drivers ... guess what , the T-bolts and later the Cobra Jets ,they dominated. in my opinion , that's why it was cool , as we always had the competition and we cheered for our make of machinery

Not every 409 was fast...I had a 62 409 Biscayne with the 385 horse, not the one with the two fours...that was the bad ass. And you have to consider that on the street back then the tires were narrow and crap. It was who ever could "hook up" their machine. Usually the real bad ass cars would spin and the lesser car would win, but not always. Thanks for your great comment. freakineagle Exactly. The top of the line 409's (dual quads) pushing 425 HP most definitely WERE fast, and could run with ANYTHING back in the day. But the more tame 409's simply weren't fire breathers. The same can be said for ALL makes, whether it be Chevy, Pontiac, MOPAR or Ford. Big blocks installed in family station wagons were quite tame, and they were still tame when the same engines were installed in two door coupes. The only real exceptions are the 426 Hemi, the Ford 427 cammer, and the Chevy ZL1. Everything else was tuned anywhere from mild to wild. Look at the Chevy 350. The 1970 LT1 ran like a bat out of hell. ANY 350 from say, 1978 was a dog.

I'll take the Pontiac. I'm a Mopar guy but Pontiac is my favorite brand other than Dodge and Plymouth. Those early 60's full size Pontiac's are beautiful cars...particularly the 61-62 bubble tops. But my favorite big Pontiac's have always been a 62 Catalina 421 Super Duty and a 65 Catalina 2+2 with the Tri Power 421 HO and a 4 speed. Always liked the 69-72 Grand Prix SJ/SSJ, 58-59 Tri Power Bonneville's, 60-61 Catalina 389 Super Duty, and the 57 Bonneville too...Pontiac's very first high performance car. I am primarily a Mopar guy but Pontiac definitely made the coolest full size performance cars. Mopar concentrated more on their intermediates and pony cars when it came to performance. All those big early to mid 60's Pontiac's with high performance versions of the 389/421 are awesome cars. Big, beautiful, comfortable, and FAST!!!

If you look at the record books 409 was the best in the nhra with its biggest greatest win in the us nationals. 421 was the best in the nascar biggest win the Daytona 500 both GM sisters in 1962 knew how to win and win big.

Pontiac dominated nascar with 421 during this era. Also, look at the 7th suggested video down on the right. One should not argue with a word like 'never' cos you'll be proven wrong. Great vintage footage though. There were simply more chevys and chevy parts back then for the average guy at the track to mod your own. All 409s didn't have 2-4s and neither did many 421 Pontiacs but in this race I'm pretty sure there is a 409 2-4 and 421 tripower (which is only 750cfm) and not the 'best' 421, the SD 421 which owned the 409 (both having 2-4s). Takes homework.

Back in the day(60s) street racing for money, street guys were more leary of 64-66 Pontiac's (inc. GTOs) than a Hemi. A bottled up (thru mufflers) Hemi did not run so good. One of the hot rod books, back then did an article on that subject and claimed a bottled up Hemi on the street thru stock mufflers, lost almost 120 HP. Once I saw a good running 327-365 HP Corvette coupe beat a Hemi twice in a row. Exciting days/nights always action going on which I was right in the middle off for years.1955 to 1971. I had many, many cars Gassers, S/Stockers, Modified Production and a very special Corvette coupe. (had many 'Vettes). From the nightly hangouts to the connecting highways of NY where they ran the "Flying Mile" races at night. To quote Elmer Kieth "HELL I WAS THERE".

Well yes falconator a duel 4 BBL set-up does make that big of a difference to start 2 650 cfm 4 bbls will flow 2 twice as much air or more than GMs 3 duce set-up second the duel quad intake Pontiac used on the SD was a high performance piece it flowed far better than Pontiac's 3 duce intake but the main difference is the SD part a 421 SD was basically a factory racing engine with high flow heads a radical high lift solid lifter cam light weight aluminum header 13 to 1 compression and more from the factory as you can see the 421 SD was much more than adding 2 bbls. the chevy 409 duel quad was Chevy's race engine it wasn't bad but the Pontiac 421 SD made about 80 or 90 more HP than the 409 with both engines in factory trim there's a video on you tube showing a dyno comparison of the two as far as your ranger goes now that would pretty muck be a waste of time and money now wouldn't it Tell ya what if your ranger has the V6 you can do something's to make a nice sleeper out of it those V6s run pretty good btw Chevy's 409 W (mark 1)big block wasn't a very good performance engine due to its stupid combustion chamber design but the mark 2 big block aka the mystery motor only about 50 427s were built and the mark 4 big blocks are really good performers in you're case wondering Chevy canceled the mark 3 before producing any engines they bought the design from Packard and decided not to use it

+D. J. Tanner ...the pathetic 389 in your 4000+ GP made just 335 hp which ruled nothing in the 60's. Ford's big Galaxy in 1966 with it's 425 hp and 480 ft/lbs, dual quad 427 easily squashed any GP back then, even the 421's. And we need not even bring up Mopar and it's killer big block wedge motors and it's Hemi cars which hit the streets in 1964 in big cars like the Polara and Belvedere. And as for Chevy? How about the 409 hp, 409 in 1962 which they stuffed into every big car they made; Impala, Biscayne and Bel Air, all big cars. Their badass 427 came out in 1967 with 385 hp and 460 ft/lbs which which was tuned up to 425 hp and 460 ft/lbs for the '69 Impala. So, come on DJ, the GP was a beautiful, great handling car but it was woefully slow in drag racing, especially with one wheel drive, on the streets.

***** Well I was at the drag strips every weekend, back then, And anyone who knew anything about engines knew you couldn't rev the 409 or 348. They were the biggest Bore/Stroke of any engine of the time, but had a weak crank assembly, (no 4 bolt or cross bolted mains) and weak pushrods. It was common to see pushrods sticking through the valve covers. Full sized Chevies were lighter than Ford and Dodge. I raced motorcycles for a dealer at he time and was a machinist, so I got a lot of the engines in our shop.

Here in Georgia, we rode the strip all the time during the 70s-early 80s. Cool ppl wouldn't leave the house to buy a pack of cigs without riding the strip at least once to see who else might be out there. The 70s were the best years ever imo. The great muscle cars of the 60s were used cars by then and could be bought unbelievably cheap...the music was the best, weed was cool, hard drugs weren't addictive, beer was cheap and the girls were skinny!!! Mini skirts were in, so were hot pants and halter tops. I often wished mini skirts would make a comeback, but it's too late now. Chics these days couldn't wear them. And if they did, they would still be ugly with their phat asses, botox lips, nose piercings and ugly ass tatts. Yep, those days are gone forever. You can't tell a Chevy from a KIA from a Nissan these days. And nobody cares. They are all just little piles of plastic shit. I am so glad I was a teenager in the 70s. It's so sad that young ppl will never get to experience the enchantment of such a beautiful world.
