400m.WR-Marita Koch European Championships,Prague,1978

Спорт

The third of Koch's astonishing seven 400 metres world records. With hindsight all a bit dubious, which is a pity because, with or without chemical input, she almost certainly would've been at the very top. Here,on the day,she leaves a class field trailing in her wake to record a new WR time of 48.94.

Even if you are on that doping program, you need talent to run such a time. It's not just like you take it and automatically run such a fast time. She is obviously very talented, but also, what is sad to say, very likely doped.

Even sadder is the fact that most of them didn't even know that they were cheating. They lived under a regime that taught them to trust the coaches and the suits, so when they were given "vitamin" pills and regular injections, they just accepted it and didn't question it. In a way, they were guinea pigs for the pharmaceutical companies, particularly Jenapharm. They were also the first to use weight training and aerobic training and they had some marvelous facilities, all paid for by the state. They had all of the benefits that today's professional athletes have during an era where the Americans, Australians, Brits and Canadians were under strict amateur controls that, contributed to by a severe lack of government funding, limited their chances of keeping up.

Then so should everyone else too. You think Usain is clean when every one of the other Jamaican sprinters was clearly juiced up? The only reason Usain's times were never questioned is because athletics was already going through an incredibly bad period when he came along, it would have totally destroyed athletics as a sport if any positive tests had come out and global organizations such as Nike would never let that happen. (Even to this day, everyone is still juiced up at elite level). The GDR athletes were 'exposed' by the 'West Germans' after unification in a fit of jealousy and also by some of the GDR athletes seeking financial compensation because in a unified country they suddenly lost all of their 'priveliges'. The West Germans, as well as the USA, UK and everyone else were also juiced up, but they simply weren't good enough. The main difference wasn't the choice of drug, the main difference was that in the GDR anyone who showed sporting promise was put in a special school where they did little else apart from train. Don't forget, Marita destroyed all of the other GDR girls too. She was a truly once in a lifetime talent who always looked feminine in her build too.
