So sorry for your loss 🙏🏻 This history is from some of the most interesting times in French History wow! It will be so cool to see it translated! It seems you may even have some there from the times of the “Reign of Terror.” 😮 I’ve always been fascinated with French history!

So sorry for the loss of Julian's father. You both will have many stories to tell once all the pieces are put together. You are so lucky to have friends to help. I got very interested in some of the stories. I would love to hear more. Just the appreciation of fashion, print and magazines of their times is incredible. How time has changed! I am happy for you both for having an emotional connection to the Chateau now. That is because you both made it a home. Home will be wherever you both are together. Cheers.

Very interesting. I wonder if the Imperial War Museum in London would be interested in that newspaper with the photographs of The Great War. I have contacted them on occasion and found them very responsive. Also, I'm glad that you are passing the written papers to your archeologist friends to interpret. It's very important to have papers like this to document the period. Sorry for the loss of Julian's father. Best to you, Jane, Philadelphia

These documents deserve the white glove treatment. Many are valuable. The letters are pre postage stamp and have a value as "covers" as known in philately. They are each in the $E100 range plus. If you have a spare attic room in the future you could display them as a small museum.

My sympathies for the loss of your father-in-law. Hoping you and your family collectively find comfort in memories of happier times. With regard to your attic find, what a treasure trove. I applaud your efforts to work on a categorization by era and individual and type of document. These are astounding documents, and your archeologist friends will most likely advise you on safe practices. You are fortunate the items are in as good a condition as they are, given the possible roof leaks and incursions by creatures over the years. I look forward to learning more about the people and times that contributed to your chateau and grounds.

Be careful lending important historical papers. Sadly, we found at least one or two items go missing no matter whether we have a close relationship with local interested parties or unknown experts. Its a daunting task, but be sure to have each item documented and signed for. That doesn't mean a piece or two won't be missing upon their return. I've lost something important every time I've provided a trove of photos, pastel drawings or letters for others to view unsupervised. I'd love to learn more details about the incredible people who previously occupied your property or nearby properties. The news printed in small towns may have great value without the political fluff that can be added later to sway public opinion. Your documents are glorious. I offer my deepest condolences to Julian, you and your daughters.

I am curious. Did the solder go back to his wife in Africa? Or did he eventually marry another who he had a child with? (Several years ago 2020 in a historical mansion we volunteer at in Minnesota. We found a satchel of 40 letters written 1850 to 1880 husband to wife. By putting them in chronological order they told a story, even though some were years apart. He wrote when he traveled on business. ( we notified his gr.gr.gr. gr. Grand children and they now have them. The paper was so fragile. Such a interesting & fun read for us volunteers. This home was donated to our city by the Great grand daughter who passed in 1989.) Those letters were in a leather traveling satchel, most likely the child, daughter and then granddaughter never knew they were there- There was 🤭so much stuff in the attic, the city received the homes & barns completely filled. Took our volunteers years of going through, closet by closet, drawer by drawer etc. We all with the aide of Google learned a lot of history.

Obviously 1788 is the year before the storming of the Bastille so being a chateau these docs may be of National significance as to how the aristocracy were coping before and after the new republic. 1797 is but 4 years post the execution of Marie Antoinette in 1793. They will make for very interesting reading.

@@renovatingthechateau Sure but archive boxes are better for preservation of ink writing. Plastic sleeves can retain moisture and gradually the ink will fade and make the letters impossible to decipher. You can keep the more recent correspondence written with typewriter or printed paper in plastic sleeves but not the 200yo items. Please use breathable material for storage of the older archives or store the way it was laid out in the attic. It seems to have been very successful so far. Very sorry for your loss.
