$400 Nano vs. $20 Alibaba Comparison | High Tech Hearing Aid or Cheap Amplifier?

Nano Hearing Aid vs Alibaba Amplifier Comparison | High Tech Hearing Aid or Cheap Amplifier? Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and Founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, compares the Nano Advanced Hearing Technology Hearing Aids with a Cheap $20 Alibaba Hearing Amplifier.

*The information presented in this video is my own opinion. My content is intended to provide information that is of value to the public on issues of public concern. I did not receive any compensation for this video.
If you've ever done a search for online hearing aids and then gone on Facebook, you've likely been bombarded by ads from a company called Nano Hearing Technologies.
According to the Nano website, they manufacture Advanced Hearing Aids that "Auto-Adjust" to you hearing loss without the need of a hearing test, they work for "98.7%" of individuals with hearing loss, and have over 3,000 reviews without a single 1 or 2 star review, and all of this for only $400 for a pair of devices.
Upon looking at these Nano hearing aids, they appear to be very similar to the $18-20 amplifiers sold on Alibaba.com. Alibaba connects manufacturers of cheap products from places like China and India to distributors who sells those products to consumers.
An unboxing of the Nano Hearing Aids and Alibaba Hearing Aids revealed devices that were 99% identical other than the NANO branding and the Chinese branding. However, looks can be deceiving so we decided to objectively test the performance of the devices to see if there are any differences.
The first test is the Diagnostic test inside of the Otometrics Hearing Instrument Test Box. This allows us to test the hearing devices in a very controlled environment that eliminates almost every variable of testing. Results of this test showed that both devices performed almost identical to each other. Not only did they perform the same, but even the volume control functioned the same. The volume on both the NANO and the Alibaba device only had 2 settings, Maximum volume & Minimum volume. There is no in-between volume settings with these devices.
Next, we tested these devices using Real Ear Measurement using the Otometrics Aurical Probe Microphone Measurement (PMM) equipment. This test will let us see how these devices perform inside of a user's ear. It will also tell us if a prescription for a Normal to Moderate Sensorineural Hearing Loss can be met with these devices. Upon testing the amplification, the devices performed almost identical. This was not surprising considering their similar performance in the Hearing Instrument Test Box. They were also not able to meet the user's hearing loss prescription.
Not only do these devices perform identically, they look identical, feel identical, and have equally bad sound quality in my opinion.
I typically try to remain as unbiased as possible, and don't care if you buy hearing aids from me, another provider, Costco, or online, as long as you are making an informed decision. That being said, I would not, in good conscience, recommend that anyone even try a NANO or Alibaba hearing amplifier.

I was considering buying a pair of the alibaba hearing aids for my grandmother as they're cheap and she's gone through 4 or 5 pairs of prescription hearing aids already. I figure she's 98 and has severe dementia she's bound to break or lose them again and it would be nice to not take a huge loss on them. The only problem is she has nerve deafness so her prescription aids were tuned to specific frequencies. would something like this do her any good at all or would i be wasting my money on them?

I mean, you could save some money buying the Alibaba hearing aid over the Nano if you were willing to put up with the poor quality, and he does save you from wasting your money on this and other rip-offs. . . a nd save your ears from further damage. Besides reviewing specific products, his reviews help educate you about what hearing devices do, how they work and why and how they cost so much money. A large part of that fee is the doctor and the prescription and customizing a hearing device to a specific patients needs which is what you get when you go to a hearing doctor like him, which is what he means about focusing on quality, not price. If you want to save money and fly without a prescription, you are going to have to do a lot more research. I think there may be some self adjustable models, but I am not sure how good it is. There is a huge difference between hearing amplifiers which Dr Cliff just reviewed in this video and professionally fitted hearing aids. $4500 is average for midpriced, professionally fit hearing aids for both ears. You must remember, you are not buying just hearing aids, but are paying for education, counseling, verification, and validation of the fitting. The service component is customarily bundled into the fee you were quoted. If you don't want an automatic hearing aid which it sounds like that was what was being offered, then I suggest you consider economy line, manual adjustment hearing aids that can cost anywhere from $700 to $1200. Miracle Ear is notorious for overcharging for hearing aids and they only carry one product line. You are better off going to a private practice audiologist or ENT clinic that carries multiple lines, at least three. There is more choice and you will find the right technology for your needs. And yes, hearing aids in most cases help with tinnitus management.

Doctor Cliff, if its possible, would you please make a video talking about the common complaints patients have with the way things sound and how you deal with it? ATM I just play around with the amount of gain at a given Hz to fix the undesired effect (too tinny, boomy, hollow, ect) But im sure there is a better, more professional way. I remember my prof told us that adjusting the TK and compression ratio will also solve some issues. I want to make my clients as comfortable as possible when they are in a listening environment while keeping as close to their targets. But I feel anxious about messing around with those settings in fear that i will make the audio even worse that it already is.

Thank you for the analysis, Dr Cliff. I just bought a set of Kirkland for $1500 from Costco, and while I'm disappointed that they are defeatured, I've come to the conclusion that the cheap hearing amplifiers, with or without an audiologist test, have the potential to further damage your hearing, and just a bad idea in general. Having said that, I do think that hearing aids are ridiculously overpriced, and that they definitely should be covered by insurance, which 99% of the time, they are not.

Hi Don, no one should lose their job over untreated hearing loss. I don't know where you are, but in Texas where I am, there is the Texas Workforce Commission that assists HOH/Deaf with hearing aid purchases and any assistive technology that is needed for the job. I believe most states in the US, if not all, have vocational rehabilitation services for those showing financial need and who are in the workforce and need hearing help. If you don't qualify for such a program, then consider economy line hearing aids- all the major manufacturers offer them. Good luck.

Hi Richard. In terms of performance, you would probably do better with a pair of NuHeara IQBuds boost amzn.to/2BVBPg5 or even the original IQBuds amzn.to/2SxShbX

Im sure you just saved me from making a really expensive mistake. I’ve worn Hearing Aids before and that was a mistake also. They helped my hearing somewhat but I always thought I should have seen a Doctor an audiologists. But it became a mute point when the first time I walked in the rain and forgot them. They screamed at me and quit working. Those I purchased from a sales call after getting information on line. This time I’ll do my research before I purchase and I’ll get an audio log done. Thank You. Your work is very much appreciated Dexter Ray

I did purchase Nano hearing aids and I am not happy with them. I wish I had seen this video before I purchased them. I tried to return them and I was sent another pair that were suppose to be better, they were not. Long story short ..... I did not receive a refund. I was told that the time limit had expired for a refund and I replied to them had they responded to me in a timely manner the time limit would not have expired.

Cliff... the problem is that brand name hearing aids are frightfully expensive. I understand that many are the products of research and testing and that costs money but the actual components in a hearing aid, in reality, just cost pennies (I know because I work with electronics). The prices being charged for these things is unconscionable and many companies rely on the fact that health insurers will just fork out the money. In Australia pensioners may obtain basic brand name hearing aids and have them replaced as they fail for the rest of their lives. Well and good. I am a self-funded retiree. My hearing loss is profound at the high registers. I was fitted for a pair of these new "intelligent" aids. When it came time to tell me the cost I almost fell out of the chair! The company ( big hearing aid chain in Australia ) wanted $11,500 for EACH earphone. That's bloody ridiculous when you look at the actual cost of raw materials, assembly, electronics and marketing. To my way of thinking it's high time these manufacturers were investigated for the way they generate their profits. In the meantime I wait patiently for the new breakthroughs in growing cochlear hair receptors to pass all regulatory testing and become commonplace.

I'm sorry, but $11,500 per device is HIGHWAY ROBBERY! No wonder you are jaded. Hopefully you didn't purchase from them. Shameful.
