40 YEARS AGO This Corrupt Family Fled Their Abandoned Palace
Ойын-сауық
Welcome to Brothers of Decay! We are a group of individuals who have a passion for exploring abandoned places. Our aim is to document these forgotten locations and uncover the stories that lie within.
In this video, we take you on a journey through the Vasconcelos family's abandoned house, a place that has been left to decay for four decades. The Vasconcelos family was once one of the wealthiest and most influential in this Portuguese region, with deep roots in politics and a long history of shaping the country's future. However, their dirty secrets were exposed in the mid-1980s, leading to their downfall, and eventually, fleeing from the country.
We hope you enjoy this exploration of the Vasconcelos family's abandoned house. How come I cannot find anything about Jose or Maria Vasconcelos if they were as prominent as claimed and as prosperous as this? Who were these people? (I am a Finnishman, not a Portuguese)

I love seeing you and Danny together 💘 You both are such sweet young men and so respectful about the stories of the people that you explore their homes. Thank you for giving us such wonderful memories and these beautiful homes. 💕🙂
I grew up in a home with 9 kids. We were mom, dad and me and 4 of sisters still at home (two half siblings grown and out on their own) when my parents took in four of my cousins. Of these cousins there were two girls and two boys ages 2,4,7 and 9. I was about 5 years old at the time. We lived on a ranch in California and had a 4 bedroom house.

i am oldest of 7. we had a 3br ranch and after parents divorced, we lived in a 2br duplex. had a couch that pulled out into 2 single beds. i had one, mom had the other. 4 girls in one room, 2 boys in the other. my brother had 10 kids. the 12 of them lived in a 1br house. the dining room was turned into a br for all the kids and he and wife had the bedroom (quite small). house had larger kitchen, 1 bath w/shower, no tub, living room, dining room, bedroom.
The furniture in the first room, the wooden ceiling and floor, the wonderful carpets (WOW), every single object feels so old... and every time I see these old books left behind in the dust... So many memories, smells, ... I loved this castle!!!
I love your voice. I could listen to you talk for hours. I do listen to you talk for hours almost every evening when I watch old abandoned places on here! Thank you! You help me pass my time so much!
I worked for Singer in the early 1970's teaching sewing lessons. I was in my 20's then. Am 75 now. Love watching your vids. Keep up the good work Leslie.
What a beautiful castle 🏰. Love the antiques. It's a shame to see everything left behind. Stay safe 👌 👍 🙏 ❤ 💓 💙
Such a beautiful Portuguese house! I love its architecture and the interior design, absolutely wonderful antiques and family pictures! Thank you ,Lesley and Danny, for this great journey into the past! Stay funny, talented and excited!👍
Oh wow! This is a fantastic home to explore in beautiful Portugal. As a student of European history and politics I couldn't resist doing a bit of investigation myself. I looked up the family and it seems they were active in government for many years of the 20th century. Even a Prime Minister of Portugal at one time as well! Great find as ever and I just loved the cheeky comments from Lesley as we went around the house. Thanks and I look forward to the next one!
Adoro a sensibilidade que o Leslie tem ao narrar, além de ter uma voz suave e um sotaque maravilhoso! Obrigada pelo novo vídeo! Abraços do 🇺🇸e 🇧🇷.
Thank you for taking us to places most of us could never go in our lifetimes. For young men you have such a great appreciation for history and preserving it for generations to come!!! I think you 2 are amazing!
Stained glass windows and such Antiques have been left the Furnitures is absolutely such gems! They did live well! This is a lovely and interesting house with many unique items left behind!
Hey Guys Thanks! I am Vasconcelos but grandparents came to the states the 1920's. My grandfather died before I was born but my dad told us that we came from a very old family. that's again.
The hooks on the wall held very exspensive pieces of art. Unbelievable what they had to leave. They were in a huge hurry.
I don’t understand how a house can sit in the middle of a populated area for all those years and have no one bother it or retrieve any of the property. That is beyond crazy.

Have not yet watched this video to the end nor researched the Vasconcelos properly but it is possible the ordinary commoners and their offspring have nothing negative to say about Vasconcelos family....just like the ordinary commoners did not all that much hate criminals such as Pablo Escobar (of Columbia) and Robin Hood (of United Kingdom) nor the Roman politician and general Julius Caesar the Populares member either. On the contrary.

I absolutely love that you and Danny are documenting together. Ya'll are a lot of fun. Yes I said ya'll 😊. I live in beautiful Tennessee in the United States of America 🇺🇸 😍. I am disabled and love the beautiful and historic places you take me. ❤❤
It's just beautiful and so sad that time and nature are slowly taking over. Thank you for your videos and the respectful way you treat the property. It must be wonderful to see all of this first hand. Thank you for taking all of us along with you.

The sadness is how the owners of the house robbed the country people of money & used the money to live in fine places
Absolutely gorgeous and amazing. Y’all do such wonderful documentaries ❤
Thank you Leslie and Danny. I really enjoy the two of you together. Since it's been cold and grey here in northern Michigan, I very much enjoyed spending a hot Summer day with you guys. I can't wait till the next adventure.
Hello Lesley ❤️ ! Can't wait to see this amazing place and find out about the secrets. Enjoyed it! Books and the old photos also the Barrells for the wine. Proost! Lesley ❤️ Beautiful picture 🖼️
Beautiful place and the things they left behind are gorgeous
Hey Lesley, that is a very beautiful palace somewhere in Portugal. I love these Portuguese mansions and palaces, because they usually have a very rich background history. I am already excited to see your first video of the new year 2023 and to hear more about that wealthy family and their "dirty " secrets. Wonderful to see shortly a new video from BrosofDecay. They are really making my evening to something special. Stay safe, many hugs, peace and kindest regards, bro!

Congratulations for your overwhelming words, Sir! I wonder, where you've learned such a beautiful British English. You must be a very well-educated guy.
I have been watching for several years and am totally astounded by the dollar amount of the beautiful furnishings that are found in these places. Just amazing. Thank you for such wonderful documenting of history.
Great job once again Leslie and Danny. Thats one of these homes that is never coming back. A great home gone forever. I will keep watching. Stay safe you two. Thanks
You and Danny are the best. I love watching your videos. Thank you. From America.
I have been watching your videos since July of last year. It all started when I searched for old cottages from hundreds of years ago. I just wanted to see what they looked like and that is when I seen your video and I have been wanting them ever since! You got me hooked and I am so glad to spend my time doing it!
The curtain above the door is a valance. The Singer award is for a master sewer, aka Tailor, upon completion of a course requiring advanced sewing skills. Both knowledge and sewing samples were required of the person to finish the course.
Loved this mansion. Thanks Lesley 🎉
Hello brother Lesley and Danny! How interesting it is that certain people get rich off of corruption but at the same time how justice finally reigns. It was never theirs to belong with.
Thank you for being respectful when touching things .
A very good2023 from the Nederlands. Thanks for the video,s Bros of decay…….👍👍👍🙏💋💋💋
Thank you for the respect you show the homes and families you visit. Please show more of the china and crystal and the marks on the back. I really enjoy your program. Watching you now in Canada.
What a beautiful home 🏡 😍 💕
When googling “antique Portuguese hair crimper” I found ones that looked very much like the tool that was laying next to the scythe.

Tastefully, wonderfully, and respectfully done, as always, dearest Lesley and Danny! Thank you for all you do. I am totally hooked! Love you! 😘🤗🇺🇸
Out of your many podcasts lve watched & enjoyed....l really loved this one. Definitely one of my favourites. I look forward to watching the vid you made of your grandfathers memories. Thanks for exploring history in places most of your viewers would never have the opportunity to see.
This was such great research done and the history was so well known. The Last Supper on the Wall shocked me as it was the "EXACT" same looking one that my husband brought home to me while in the Viet Nam War when in the Navy while in Italy! It was the exact same design and one of the best made, as I have always said that I have ever seen! I let my children take it, and then did not see it again. I have asked them about it, and yet do not see it, but they claim to have it. If they do not want it i would take it back, as my husband did get it from Italy and we just thought the children may want it for keeping, but when seeing it on the wall and it will now be ruined, and this looks like that one (although I know it is not the same one) but it just shocked me as have never seen another just like it before! It is so beautiful and with some cleaning and brushing up some I know thsi one can be saved but now it will be totally destroyed! so terrible. This had to be such a special home, but yet we cannot have anything forever, so it seems. It is too bad they had to more in the wrong direction and want to look at the greed and wealth of life and all the power an forget the most important things in life. They would possibly still be there if it was right for them anyway. Who knows maybe now they have made themselves a new life in another country and live well, but living a life that is legal? That would be great if it is true. But if history repeats itself, they may still have a downfall. Often, we need to learn lessons and we just do not learn them easily and take everyone else, especially family, with us. Thank you for showing us all of these homes from the past and also giving some history to each if able.
Simply....amazing. I can see all the children bustling around playing having fun. The mom making dinner... Thanks for showing us this place
Beautiful now I can only imagine back in the day when it was all safe.very nice.Lealie and Danny.thank you for all you do.
Another amazing documentary Leslie and Danny Thank you for such wonderful entertainment !!!!

HELLO BROS!! I'm curious to know about the history of this Portuguese family that abandoned this beautiful palace. Was it his own will or was there another reason? Inside the palace there must be many mysteries. Let's wait!!!❤❤

No matter how hard I google, I cannot find anything about any prominent Portuguese person called Jose or Maria whose surname is Vasconcelos.
@Cybernaut76
Жыл бұрын
@@nicolad8822 Yeah. If this Vasconcelos had anything to do with dictator Salazar, he would have had to flee Portugal about fifty years ago, not forty years ago. Dictator Salazar lost his office in 1968 (because he became incapacitated to be a leader due to falling in coma) and President Tomas (who fired Salazar due to Salazar becoming unable to work as a leader), was himself removed from presidency in 1974 by the Carnation Revolution, ending forty eight years of authoritarian rule in Portugal. This Vasconcelos is very obviously a fictional/made up person.
Lesley is a great communicator...he's got all the right skills ....naturally
Lesley, enjoy watching your videos. And learning the history. Thank you 🌹❤
Thanks, Lesley and Danny.
thankyou for all your awesome vids and respect for everything you touch. love from australia
Googled the family that fled and couldn't find anything. There was a physician and politician in Portugal. Was this him? I looove Portuguese tile and architecture. I have very distant roots from Portuguese. Probably great great grandparents.

Wow what a beautiful house i love that hope chest its Amazing !!! I can't say it enough Thank you so much for taking me with you on your Adventures 💚you are so Lucky !!!
Interesting architecture. Looking forward to seeing everything! 😊
The little curtain over the door is called a valance, usually at the top of windows in the USA
It should be saved. Thanks guys! You did a great job! 👍😊
Thank you Danny for your wonderful knowledge of your country🙂
Another great video as always . Thank you .❤
Happy New Year Lesley!, such an interesting story of the owner and wonderful house in a state of decay, thanks for sharing, good luck to your next adventure and God bless you always! 😺😇🙏🇵🇭
Another lovely video beautiful home such a shame left to rot 😢. Keep up the good work, I enjoy your expeditions immensely.
الزمن القديم مليء بالجمال أسلوب السكن الرائع كل تفاصيله كانت جميله الآن في عصرنا الحديث لا توجد هذه التفاصيل المنقوشه الرائعه في كل شيء 😢
Thanks for sharing the history of this abandoned Palace. Good question is, where did they all go ? Hybernated to another place in other they won't be known ? Guess, this is a MYSTERY UNSOLVED. Beautiful atmosphere but , 4 decades ago a lot where lost in the Palace. God bless 😇 you Sir and keep safe always. Good luck to your next adventure. Until then.

Hi Lesley and Danny. Beautiful castle and love the antiques. It a shame to see everything left behind. Great video. Stay safe.👍❤️🥰
Sad to see this, people are dieing by hunger. Unemployed. Depressed, in trauma. Not even having basic facilities like shelters. And such ruins are just example of ego and megalomaniac behaviour that's why such places are not abandoned.
The letter you showed had wax seals. It’s melted candle and then press it with a seal. So cool!!
Wie immer ein schönes Video . Vielen Dank 👍
Another great video, thank you guys!
I have this dream of restoring a place such as this. I have no idea if this palace is safe from dangerous chemicals or if it could be heated and cooled efficiently. Or if the plumbing is acceptable or exactly what. Or the structure sound. But I would paint that stairwell the same green as that beautiful doorway/stained glass. I would restore that furniture, put new mattresses on. Clean and clean. I would use all of the personal items as decor, such as that wonderful Singer Sewing diploma-that’s a treasure. Those blanket chests are amazing. So much beauty just gone to rot. Those “tapestries” are beautiful. I’d vacuum them off and place them in a perfect location. I think I could restore the green tile bathroom. Can you just imagine that hardwood floor in the great room all restored? It’s not that difficult. Then I saw the roof caved in and raining all the way through. That’s a problem. The mold could be cleaned up. The kitchen is fantastic. I’d keep the old world items but incorporate modern items for actual use, unless I really wanted to bake bread in a bake oven. I’d live on the main floor and rent the rooms upstairs. So many bedrooms! I’d have to add at least one full bath or a bath for each room, maybe, and perhaps a kitchen area. One room could be structured into a small kitchen and full bath, then rent out the bedrooms (in America it’s about $500USD a month for a room with kitchen and bath access, so four rooms would be $2000 a month in income). That roof means the whole place should be torn down, but I surely hope those treasures, such as the green/white door, woodwork, and furniture, are saved for their antique value. I loved the winery and picture myself bringing it back to its former glory and helping the palace become self-sustaining. In America we would consider 4-5 cups of wine per day quite a drinker, lol, but I am aware that Europeans drink wine like we drink soda, and personally I would enjoy a bit more wine each day, especially if I made it myself. However, I don’t like Oaked wine, so I’d have to make something else for myself 😂. I truly wish I didn’t have such a visionary imagination because this is about as impossible a task you could think of, and the loss of all this wealth and beauty is killing me. The water damage is probably far too extensive to ever fix, and the structure is probably shot from the bad roof. If you have a solid foundation and roof, you can usually work with the rest. Okay, I’m rambling. Leslie, this was a great video, and you are so incredibly handsome and fun. Your host and camera man gave us some excellent insight which I enjoyed immensely. I’m ready to put on a respirator and get to work cleaning up the palace while my structural engineers fix the roof and structure. Can you imagine the amount of money this would cost? Lol. Now I need to find a rich investor or two! 😀😇😂😝😎🤓🥰
Great job as always thanks Danny lesley
I was going to bed and then I saw this... I like how you tell the history too. Not just sharing location. Really enjoying these videos and makes the adventerous side of my soul delighted 😄
Looks like they fled very fast this l's another lncredible find thankyou. Love your narrating your so down to earth just great. Hugs❤
This palace has a very dark vibe....and about the painting of the crying boy is it an original Bruno Amadio or Giovanni Bragolin? There are some urban legends about these paintings being cursed... Thank u guys! E Danny fale mais Português, adoro seu sotaque!!!

Awesome house sad it is abandoned thanks
Great video I'm really enjoying this channel im glad I found it! 💙
Hi Lesley & Danny, this Abandoned Palace was Beautiful from the outside with the Tile & Roof! Thanks Danny for all your info on Portugal items! It`s a real shame that with all the people living around this Palace, someone didn`t talk to someone about buying this place, before everything rots away! Love the Double Big Stained Glass Doors inside in Green! You said 7 Children & 2 Parents & 1 Maid is 10 ! Carpet on the walls is called Tapestry...which they have them in USA ! The Sickle or also spelled Scythe you saw for the fields next to it in comments said that tool was a Antique Portuguese Hair Crimper, But in the USA the blades were straight from 1920`s to 1930`s !! Love the sky light in the kitchen, the tiles, the oven & the stove! Pet birds are here in USA in a cage that you saw on the shelf in the kitchen! Love the Unique Carved Chests & Detail on Bed Frames!! Upstairs: Beautiful Sky Light above near the stairs! Closing the Shutters in bedroom by the painting of Crying Boy will save it! Barn: Grape Press & Grape Barrels was Awesome Find! Wow, Danny 1 or 2 twice a year owners would do the pressing to make wine!! Thanks Lesley & Danny for taking All of Us on this Journey to see the Palace!! Take care & stay safe, Love from Central Illinois USA🥰❤
The carved furniture and inlaid chairs are very pretty. I liked the kitchen with the bread oven. It was nice to hear of and see the famous "Crying Boy" portrait. Quite a grand place. Thank you for sharing.
Cool office furniture. Lots of detail in the craftsmanship.
Very love work you’re done 😢
So sad to see it being left neglected. beautiful furnishings.
