Either one is going to be a good stopper
In every video I've watched - the .40 has taken the cake. The .45 expands larger, but the .40 utilizes its energy better, therefore, creating a greater wound track. You're also getting higher capacity in a more compact gun. Everyone who despises the caliber needs to take another look!

Just now running across your video. Thanks for that test. I've seen a number of 9mm Silvertip videos that are mostly failures. I'm glad to see it do its job in .40 and .45.
Thanks for testing the Silvertips and in a good test medium! I generally agree that .40 s&w > .45 acp > 9x19.
I like that you cut through the wound track, I dupont think I've seen any other channel do that before. Very good video!

Solid test, real useful! I can see the usefulness of this .45 acp in scenarios where you have to avoid overpenetration at all cost!
Good video, I like that your testing light for caliber against light for caliber. You should do a hornady critical defense 45 185 against .40 165 grain

How many people have you heard that have lived from a .45 as opposed from a 9mm? Your heart and aorta are located within 3.5 inches from your chest.
Just a suggestion. I'd like to see a Nosler 40 S&W ASP 150 gr JHP test if possible. Compact and full sized pistols.
I carry a Glock 22 stoked with 180 grain HST's - they have tested really well from what I've seen. Both those did good too. I do like a bit more penetration though...
Good test, AZ, but a sub 1000 fps 185 in 45 ACP is downright pitiful! A 185 should be doing close to 1100 fps or more, which would probably put it close to 1000 or so out of a short barreled 1911. Not that the frangible Silvertip bullet would have done any better, it would have maybe made a slightly larger stretch cavity but penetration would have been just as poor! The 40 is a much better choice than the .45 in this case! My Speer 185 Gold Dots are doing very close to 1200 fps out of my 1911 Govt Model, which is the velocity a good 185 should be getting! None of this watered down junk for me! Cheers, jc

Underwood has 185g @ 1200. That should be close to 1100 in the shorter barrel. Most 45 stuff out there doesn't meet advertised specs let alone capability.
The 40 checked all the boxes pretty well. The 45 did really well all things considered. It would be better if it could penetrate a bit more but the stills tell a story also and the big bore didn't disappoint. The permanent cavity may not have been as large as one might desire but it wasn't insignificant for sure. If these are available and reasonable they wouldn't fail to be effective for purpose IMO. Thank you. Good comparison.

AzAirgunner…… Out of all the Hollow points you’ve test…… Do you have any personal favorites in a given caliber?
The advantage of the .45 is you don’t get over penetration
I carry Remington .45 acp UMC 230 gr. JHP's in my 5" 1911, which do 830 fps, penetrate 16" in gel and expand to approx. .675". I like these rounds because they're consistent, feed well, aren't as loud as other ammo and cost less than half of other SD JHP's. The performance of these is just fine for SD carry.
Win Silvertip in .40 is a very good round in nearly every test I've seen, including in its LE Ranger variant- ranger advertises like 1205fps the .45 mimics what Harrell's results show in terms of penetration. Short barrel .45 is disappointing usually in velocity. 332fpe what is the point? A micro 9 can develop that.
All right all right.
There are probably some 230g loads that will do as well velocity wise in that barrel length. 45 is kind of underloaded in a lot of ammo.
@acid6urns

short barrel .45 does absolutely awful most of the time. .45 is already moving slow, and it suffers MUCH more from velocity loss in a short barrel
@nokoolaid
5 ай бұрын
@@acid6urns A short barrel will have an effect, but Federal HST works pretty well in a short barrel. Some ammo makers really drop the ball here. for instance, Hornady Critical Defense in 45 is supposed to get 1000fps out of a 3" barrel with a 185g bullet. I've seen videos where it doesn't make that with a 5" barrel. That's a problem and it's not because it's a 45, it's because the manufacturer is screwing over the customer in not delivering the performance as advertised. Buffalo Bore and Underwood generally perform very well by comparison.
@acid6urns

@@nokoolaid i don’t think you understand what i’m saying. even good ammo from a .45 in most 230gr loads that’s just shy of 1000fps out of say a 4 or 5 in barrel will see MASSIVE velocity drop going from a 5”-4” or 4”-3” in comparison to basically any other handgun round. .45 acp as a round is just simply more susceptible to bleeding velocity when shortening barrel length than other calibers are.

Dont forgot 45 is low pressure round can be loaded up plenty more stopping power slower is better and safer on urban areas both very close like twins 45 acp has history on it,s side Taylor,d one shot stopping power chart 45 ball has (69) one shot stops not bad flat point mich better
I have the.40 and the.45 like them both
Are the silver tips on the bullets aluminum or nickeled gliding metal? The original 1980's 9mm was aluminum and later WW moved to nickel plated gliding metal.
The extra velocity in these light-for-caliber makes a difference. 45ACP's historical effectiveness is based on the subsonic round's huge expanded dimensions plowing a wide path. Shock-wave tissue disruption is velocity-based and exemplified in 357S/MAG crossing into hydrostatic shock territory. Ballistic studies have established the 125gr/1450ftps=583ft/lbs as the Gold Standard of defensive rounds dumping this energy in 12-14 inches and causing central nervous system (CNS) damage from the ballistic pressure wave. Water is not compressible which makes it an ideal medium to transfer energy to the brain.

@@acid6urnsI agree that the performance in the 40 is less hampered by barrel length. I shoot most everything so I like to know when possible how they perform in short barrels as I have short barrels in both 9mm, 40 S&W.
Why do 45 people have to prove a 100 year old round is relevant. It's on the wayside. If you want a heavy gun with a low capacity good for you. The fact is 10mm is the best auto. Deal with it.
Bro 5 inch barrel vs compact
The .45 is just not a good short barrel round no matter the bullet weight. In this test the .40 got better much better penetration and produced more jell disruption.
The 40 won.

Usually does. Remember why the 40 came into play, fbi wants better then 9. 10mm developed, g men Pillow hands couldn't handle. Hence the 40. Years of 9mm development, 'good enough' much higher capacity. Single shot wound and terminal ballistics are extremely favorable. Round count is the only debate w 40 vs 9, not ballistics

Check the bore diameter of that Rock Island! That round was too slow!
I've always felt the .40 did really well from shorter barrels whereas .45 typically doesn't. I like both, prefer the .40 just because it's on a smaller frame and gets good ballistics. I've chronographed 230gr ball .45 in the mid 700's from a G30...ouch! Overall I think the .40 works well from pretty much any barrel length and the .45 really likes the longer barrels, no so much the short ones.
Ok
People are obsessed with over penetration, you dont need 18 inches, the idea is for the round to dump the energy inside the body, not blow out the back. Your heart and aorta are about 3.5 inches deep from the chest. yes 3.5. Human bodies are frail, take a ruler, measure on the body just how thick it is. 10 inches is more than enough. The .45 was designed to leave a big hole and dump all its energy.

Gelatin isn't tissue and has no bones. It's merely a consistent test medium that is a similar density to relaxed muscle. Not all defensive gun shots are over the heart, at a 90 deg angle, and unobstructed. That's why more than 3.5 inches of penetration in test media is desired.
