One of the things on my list is that I want to be known for something food-related. Like I want people to say "can you bring your famous cake/bread/salad/whatever". Weird thing, I know.

I completely understand this, not weird at all! I have a similar one on my mental list that I want to have a skill where friends/people can call me up to perform for them. For example, hair styling, make up, etc. There are definitely more examples but that’s all I can think about right now 😅

I’m turning 40 this year, and you inspired me to write a list of 50 before 50. I think, particularly for women, that the focus is heavily on ‘your 20s’ and there’s a lot of life to live in each decade, just just seen as dwindling because society values youth in women but no experience or joys.

Also one of my favourite quotes by the late great Agnès Varda is “you have to invent life” which I think is very relevant here. Like there’s definitely this idea that life is this weird societal checklist of marriage and babies. And I much prefer the idea that nothing in life exists and you have to literally invent your own life like it’s a piece of art

I'm a vegan. I call myself a vegan and I tell people I'm a vegan. I ate a Yorkshire pudding at Christmas that very much wasn't vegan because I wanted to and my mum cooked it. I ate a croissant one morning, again because my mum bought it for me and I was staying with her and I wanted it. I am still a vegan. We don't have to be perfect to identify as vegan and talk about the benefits. GO FORTH AND BE IMPERFECT

I was in therapy the other day and I was talking about how our issues don’t just go away with age. For instance, i have a 50 yo coworker who deals with body image related insecurities and is always anxious. She’s also passed that on to her daughter who kinda learns her mom’s shame. Being 21 I just want to be happy in my 30s. I want to develop healthy coping mechanisms and tools to navigate through life without falling apart so much

I just turned 27 on Tuesday and I'm sick of people telling me that I'm nearly 30 (getting old) and should be doing XYZ things. A lot of those things are social normalised things. I still live at home, have recently swapped jobs (still finding my feet on that one) and save a decent amount of money for doing things later on in life. I also love being able to go travelling so having my base at home works. I'm Ace (people are still confused by this) and have no desire to have kids, and strangely people have opinions on that too 🙄. I'm still finding my feet, dealing/coping etc with mental and physical health too. Bottom line, I feel this. As I'm not reaching certain milestones that are placed upon us the harder it becomes to explain why or how to people who should mind their own business. I want things for my future, but they do differ from what people expect. 🙂

I have been dealing with the same comments from my family...I’m 26, turning 27 in a couple of months and I don’t understand why they all feel the need to tell me “ you’re almost 30” and need to get my shit together. Unbeknownst to them, I do things like work on my finances, job security, housing for the future and trips with my bf and it’s extraordinarily difficult NOT telling them about things that I’m doing or want in my life because each time I do, I deal with their reactions and push-back. (Their) reasons why it’s not a good idea to do what I’m excited about and future goals I have. Don’t get me wrong, I love my family and they’re supportive, it’s just always been on their terms since I am the youngest.

I had tonsilitis on my 30th birthday and I spent it metaphorically dying in bed before attending a doctor's appointment and getting antibiotics. I was recently unemployed and it was the lowest point in my life. Everything I've done since then has been better and better. I got a job in Manchester, returning to the city I was at uni in and reconnected with old friends, and then got a better job in London and loads of new friends and experiences. Now I'm living my best life.

    * find a partner to go through life with * find people I can be emotionally vulnerable with (AKA "find my family") * learn skills I've been putting off and really master them (knitting, embroidery, flemish sign language, book binding, ...) * explore who I am and learn to love all of me and if that proves impossible: be kind to the parts of myself that I can't love * adult (sort my life out financially (pension planning, understand my taxes, fuck it fund, ...), move out of my parents' house, cook more) * STOP AVOIDING OR PUTTING OF THE THINGS THAT SCARE OR INTIMIDATE ME (AKA buck up and get shit done)

Omg Leena, I'm 25 and I've been feeling a TON of anxiety around adulting, and all the stuff you're supposed to do as an adult vs the things you actually want, and how to balance doing the things you HAVE to do (pensions, taxes, learning to cook, etc), with the things that you want to do (creativity, cultivating friendships + relationships) etc...gah! Even just writing that out makes me anxioooouuus but this video made me feel surprisingly calm, and you always have a way of making hard scary adulting things sound like exciting possibilities for living the life you want to live (which they are! if we just take ownership of them rather than trying to avoid them!) So thank you! Thank you for living an adventurous life full of books and (hopefully) saving the planet. Thank you for sharing even a little bit of it with us. Excited to see where all your fabulous goals lead you!

And thanks to this video i'm thinking of my own list :)

I thought you'd said "go to Ireland and buy a boat" and didn't even question it. I was like, yeah, a decade is a long time. Sounds reasonable. ANYWAY, love this so much. Life-shaping very much on the brain, as I'm sure is true for so many people in the comments. For me it's that the end of uni is hurtling towards me (3 months to go! Ahhhhh!) and I don't have any really strong instincts about what I want to do next. (A few about what I *don't* want to do, so that's something I suppose!) Would quite like a video about volunteering: where to look, how to decide where you want your time to go when there are so many causes and organisations, how to match your skills, idk, whatever you think you'd want to know if you hadn't grown up volunteering. Going vegan is a goal of mine too, so also that, and all the fast fashion/making your own clothes stuff as well! Many thanks for the great video as always :)

  • @EmmaAus

As far as volunteering... A great place to start is to think about your value system, & how you want the world to look in the future... What are the main things you want to see changed? Once you've sussed that out, try find organisations that are in line, & ideally are smaller scale, or have good track records of transparency etc. A great place to physically start, if the idea of linking up with an organisation seems daunting, is to have a browse of places like HelpX or WorkAway... Hope that's at least a little helpful 🌹 All the best with it all hun. Sending love from Australia ❤ Emma 🌈🔅

Hi, Leena. I am almost 32. Thirties are the best thing that happened to me. My 40th thing on the list would be - I want to fully acknowledge, accept and LIVE the fact that I don't have to do anything, and I can do everything I want. Meaning - just because I am living my life a certain way today, doesn't mean I have to live it the same way tomorrow - I have the power to change it. Best regards!

Gumptioner here :D I'm 19 so still have all that to come but I've been thinking a lot about coming to the end of being a teenager, and looking back at what I have/haven't done compared to what's expected of 'teenagers' as a group. I'm pretty quiet and shy but also do want a lot of the typical expected and extroverted stuff yet feel like I've wasted the decade in a way as I haven't lived up to all the things I expected of myself, though I realise that some of those expectations have been imposed on me and some were also just not the right fit for me. I'm trying to come to terms with who I am and also challenge why I already feel like that's who I have to be and stay being. For some reason I feel as though I can't do 'teenagery' things when I'm in my twenties so will have missed out on what many people say is the best time (though I hope that's not true), but I'm trying to convince myself that these things don't have an age limit :')

Hello from your friendly neighbourhood thirty-plusser - this time is not wasted! Other people's idea of what a decade of life looks like isn't the answer. If you've got closer to understanding what it is that makes you happy, or what it is that you DON'T want your life to look like, you're nailing it. Be kind to yourself x

I'm thirty-five and I'll frequently do teenage stuff because I want to and it makes me happy 😁. The one thing I unfortunately learned too late for my actual teens & twenties, because I unfortunately spent those in an emotionally abusive family and tried to just survive the experience XD, is that you can do whatever! the! heck! you! want! (as long as it doesn't harm others of course). Maybe it's a female bodied thing, but the amount of compliance to silly rules I've felt has veen way too much. Now I'm just "too old to care" anymore. Do I want to own a purse with cute Anime style animals on it? Heck yeah! Do I want that way too dressed up fancy style for a family dinner? Go for it! Do I want to roll off a hill and laugh like a child! Ooooh yeah! I have felt way too weighed down and unhappy trying to squeeze myself in that societal norm of grown-up-ness and my inner voice taunting me "a grown woman bodied person doing/wearing/saying XYZ? Pathetic! You know better... You want to be taken seriously right!?" Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr 😡😖 So I'm applauding you for learning that lesson wayyyyy earlier and having fun in life NOW instead of denying it because life didn't work out in a way for you when it was socially acceptable XD Lots of love! We're in this together!

i think one of my goals would be to get to know myself better. i've been working on it, i've been making progress!! i know what i need when i feel like i'm in the aura of a potential anxiety attack. i need my heating pad, my weighted blanket + a soft one if it isn't too hot, a hot shower, hot cocoa or lukewarm is good too if i forget about it long enough, kleenex nearby, and a good and happy movie i know what i need when i feel like i'm in a rut, when i'm depressed about it. i need to go the gym and do some simple chores; completing those tasks make me feel accomplished. maybe a hot shower, showers always feel like "wash the physical filth and the mental funk off" for me, plus i play happy music whenever i shower. sometimes i bake cookies for another simple "you accomplished something!". im usually too depressed to do complicqted things like cook, but walking to get take-out helps me feel healthier for a low amount of effort. it's also premptively good of me to go work out for even just 10 or 25 min a day to make those days happen less i just do the eliptical for now but that + a video while i do it helps my brain a LOT already i'm learning more about what i need from my close relationships with other people unanimously, and i'm learning how to productively put in that love for another and, in response, they give love back rather than just asking for it. it's more mutual and healthier to say "i saw/heard [x] and it made me smile because i thought of you!! i miss you and i love you so much, i hope we can find the time for a chat soon, you're really good company" than it is to say something bad about yourself to fish for being given the love you need. plus, giving love??? it makes you feel more loved before they even send a response; 12/10 exp, must reccomend. juliet was right about love being like the sea-- the move i give, the more i have, for both my heart and the sea are infinite i've also learned that i need a pet, always, as a part of the stability of my mental health. so i spoke to my doctor and got certified for an ESA or Emotional Support Animal. i can't bring my pet into any sort of resteraunt or workplace, but it is a v proactive little slip of paper that says anybody in housing or real estate of any kind cannot ask me to pay an extra fee for having an animal or disallow my application because i have one. so i have a rescue cat now, she's extremely cuddly and clingy and talkative and i adore her i think i still need more therapy, i went for a while in hs, but i don't have the fiances for it here in America. but, it's within my own 10 year goal to go back to that because i think i might need that regularly anytime i don't want to do something in the morning: make myself hot cocoa. i'm not a morning person. i have yet to find a tea i like, and caffeine induces migraines so coffee is a no-go, but a warm drink helps me feel comforted that i just gotta go do that thing i dont wanna in the morning. its still not great but, that and some warm food, it makes the ordeal better and i feel more awake and soothed my migraines mean i can't read in the midst of one or look at screens cuz they both hurt. and i can't sleep it off cuz its too painful. so i started calling friends (after texting to see if they're free to chat for an hour or two) and that makes me feel productive and not like a lump for two hours, and like. love helps soothe the pain, y'know? i've also been learning more about my ADHD and executive dsyfunction and inducing the "Might As Well" mindset of setting up X next to Y so when i go do X i "might as well" do Y, and other tricks i've been learning to check in with myself emotionally when i'm with people, esp new people, like how my thoughts are making me physically feel (uncomfortable= chest is tight, excited= face feels warm and i'm smiling, etc). edp important for dating; doesn't matter if we're perfect on paper if i feel jittery and like i have to prove myself to this person all the time-- i want to feel comfortable around who i surround myself with. im learning to recognize my body's feelings as deciding factors on if i continue seeing a person; its my evolutionaryily-built jury for a reaaon, i need to listen to it more before deciding a verdict it's been handy, learning more about how i function and how to manipulate that into my own process of living rather than be frustrated that i don't know how to "fix" myself when i haven't even done the work to learn aboit how to productuvely fix anything about myself. it's like i'm researching for developing manual about myself, it's been really good

Also I saw that you were listening to it over and over again on audiobook, which is super smart. Like the writing it so beautiful, and the facts are so important that I think I'm going to copy that strategy so I can make sure it all sticks in my brain.

As someone who’s only turned 18 half a year ago seeing someone talk about turning 30 in a way that’s not negative is really interesting and motivating, especially the way you talk about your life right now, in the future and in the past. I feel like in this day and age there’s so much pressure to have your entire life figured out and your entire moral compass already set straight that it’s sometimes hard to not feel down about how your own life is going when you only see people your own age showing their “staged” lives on Instagram and co. I think that’s why I find you so inspiring & refreshing, because while I may not even be close to the point you are at in your life right now (I mean I’m only gonna graduate high school this year) the way you talk about “failures” in your 20s has been very comforting for me, and one certain quote of yours that you said in (I think) a cleanup video is something I wrote down immediately which now hangs next to my desk. Keep doing what you do! PS: I’ve been vegan for a little over 2 years now and I’d love to see you make some videos about that topic, but yeah, some vegans can be brutal, so I 100% understand if someone wants to figure that stuff out for themselves.

I’m about to turn 31, loved this video! Excited to journal about this topic more. Kind of related to your “build a healthy relationship with food” I want to do so with my body. I want to give more time to an activity or sport that brings me joy. For me, that would be dancing and board sports (current skateboarding, maybe snowboarding and surfing later) and just developing that intuitive communication with my body, understanding when I need to move, eat, stretch, sleep, etc.

As a 21 year old about to graduate from university (but doing my final semester online cause apparently this is the worst year to be in university) it was really helpful to hear you talk about how you’ve grown to know what you truly value. It’s scary seeing the future of the planet and knowing I have to start my adult life & career in a world that will probably look very different in 10 years. I resonated with your anxieties but I also want to say thanks for sharing your knowledge of what matters to yourself. I’m still figuring that out and it’s comforting to think that I might be doing a bit better about that in 9 years (even if the planet isn’t).

I'm not sure how it behaves on hair that has been chemically dyed before but it's definitely something to keep in mind! Lists are really useful in helping you see what you actually value Vs what you don't and need to let go of. I'm turning 27 this year and the way of looking at time - a year Vs ten - hit home so much! I still feel like a child but I kinda know why and what I need to change to feel more like I have agency over my life and future. So I'm gonna do a 5 key things to do before I turn 30, and then do a proper holy hell I'm an adult now how do? 40 before 40 list like you have. ❤️

I just turned 20 and wow this video really spoke to me. I obviously have no idea what I'm doing in life and am really at that stereotypical early 20's point were I'm like "how do I adult? What choices can I make? What do I want my life to look like? What's even realistic and affordable??" and even though it's kinda freaking me out, I think that's very okay. It's a good place to be rn even if I sometimes lay awake at night scared for my future. It just feels so calming to me that these questions do evolve and settle down a bit over time, but no matter what age you are, you're not going to know the perfect way to live your life or what the future will bring. A thing that really spoke to me in your video was figuring out what causes or things are the most important in your life, things you are willing to work for and pour your life into. Right now I kind of balance these two big passions of mine and I don't really know which one I want to pursue with higher education and make a career out of. At the same time as I low-key just want to go live on a farm with my friends, be self-sustainable and not have to think about having a "real" job ever again.

I stopped journalling to watch this, lawl. I'm turning 31 soon and am also not going to do the whole kids thing -- I should really make a list like this! The only before-40s goal I have currently is to earn a six-figure salary, which is not only a reach, it's probably coming from an unhealthy place of feeling fearful and insecure, and there are probably goals I can have that are better for me. Like your goal #34 -- it really got me. That's definitely something I've been thinking a lot about lately. Anyway, you've made a great list and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do over the next 10+ years!

I never comment on KZread videos but...I grew up on a small island in Orkney. It's a very beautiful, interesting place to live but faces many many issues - but as a holiday, very peaceful! As an easier trip, I'd reccomend Skye - there's a lovely non-profit ferry (last turntable ferry in Scotland) that makes the crossing - if you want to support a local business rather than the bridge. I also lived on a narrow boat for several years as a child - another lovely, slower pace of life. Finally, as an alternative to London, Edinburgh is wonderful and has a very vibrant literary/creative scene. I love it here. Love your videos and you are a regular source of wisdom in my life - keep being you!

By the way if it helps, the ferry crossing to/from Ireland really isn't as bad as you think! Try it in the summer to start with and it'll be grand.
