I dream of sailing off to the islands and a crossing would be so Kool But Watching all these videos on you tube and the opinions of each expert is frustrating. One says one thing and the other another 🥴 Every sport I’ve been involved in has experts . Experts that are really annoying at times. Telling you that unless you have xxx product you can’t achieve Like sailing it appears. Ocean crossing , oh you need 35/45’ of boat , you need ... But a 5 ‘ boat crossed the Atlantic ! A blind sailer from Holland crossed the Atlantic A 13 year old girl solo’d her boat. I have been looking at months of videos and I did get a lot of info and thanks to all the experts 😂. Honestly I did get info but wow

I love your channel brother. Thank you for putting in the effort to make all of these videos. I fell in love with the water at a young age living and working on a tug boat in Louisiana. I have spent the last 10 years learning to sail and researching boats to cruise in. Your channel has been a well of great information and I just really enjoy your videos. I am 35 years old an about to pay off my home and be debt free. I met my wife in Michigan where she is from and we plan on purchasing our first boat in the great lakes and sail there learning the boats quirks before heading south to the Bahamas and maybe further. We really love the S2 11 built in Holland MI and the Aloha 34 built their in Ontario Canada. When watching your videos I tell my wife one day I'm gonna run into this guy and buy him a beer. Anyways just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate all the information in your videos.

The Quartermaster * I'm amazed that you can find these kinds of boats for 40k! The one's I've seen take another 40k to actually sail and be comfortable on. Rare is a 30 year old boat a turn key possibility. Most have 30 year old electronics, a diesel that's on life support and sails that are blown out and stitching completely rotted away! Buyer beware!

As someone who has lived on a sloop at anchor for months at a time, I can attest that often the rolling is unliveable unless it's a very sheltered anchorage. Accordingly, many have suggested looking into cats if you're planning to be at anchor. Even better is a boat that can dry out and stay upright. Many times I've been in anchorages that were either not convenient to leave (because there was nowhere else to go, for example) or not safe to leave (due to inclement weather), so I stayed as the tide went out. On a sloop, this becomes a grueling, dangerous endeavour. With a bilge keel, it can be an actual pleasure. Anyone with ideas on some boat brands that fit this description? How about you, skipper?

  • @frosty3693

For another list, how about a single hander, or two crew, liveaboard? Probably not a club racer but something that go offshore, though someone has gone offshore with just about anything. (I have a book written in the 50s by two brits who did a trans-Atlantic crossing in a 19' sloop. Britian, Azores, Caribbean, USA.) I would imagine size and single sail size would be as much a factor as cost. Toss in complexity and labor reduction gear vs. cost and cost to maintain.(that could be a separate video on it's own)

Be wary of brokers who only take select pictures of doors or ice box lids. It means the rest of the cabin is trash. I was looking at pictures of a Fisher 37 that was in Port Credit. Nice outside pictures and a couple of close-up interior pictures. The price was for a good condition, sailaway boat.I found other pictures of the boat on another site. The inside was torn apart and half way through a re-fit.

Great video Tim. You're almost to the area that I'm looking at. I'm 55 y/o and looking for a world cruiser with the conveniences of the walk-thru transom, shoal draft, and comfortable interior...yet something built strong enough to handle a Pacific crossing. I seem to be finding boats in the $60k to $100k range, but there's not many around. One that's really caught my eye is the Catalina Morgan 381 and the Catalina Morgan 45. I've called brokers for 3 boats in the past 6 months but they've already been under contract. 😟

I have opted to move away from the 80s racer cruisers and go for more of a tank built cruiser, i don't see why speed is such a big factor in most people's sailing needs.. They sacrifice space, comfort and practicality (300l water, 200l fuel, bigger galley, saloon, head, cabins and so much more)... for speed....

I spent a couple hours doing some googling about Hunter yachts after watching a couple of your previous videos (think it was the $30k boat and don't buy a Hunter videos). I couldn't find any forum posts or articles condemning them on their production or ride quality. It appears that Hunters "B&R" rigging is the big sticking point of sailors discussing Hunter sailboats. While there were a few here and there stating they did enjoy the simplicity of the rig, the vast majority decried their down wind performance and the difficulty of "tuning" the rig. It sounds like while running or on a broad reach that the rig is limited and can even result in sail damage from the spreaders impacting the main sail. On the other hand the rig is described as simple to use and "safe". While I cant speak from experience this does sound like it should be one of the main considerations when making a yacht selection and at the moment I'm definitely leaning toward boats with a more conventional rigging configuration, despite the considerable impression Hunter's make at a glance.

How about a focus on use. If your viewer wants a day sailor, or something for local use then Hunters, and their like are fine. But don't mislead them into thinking those boats can safely cross oceans. There are more important aspects to a proper sailing yacht than a walk through transom. Talk about cored decks and all the issues they raise. Focus on lay up construction: Matt or chopper gun. People are going out on the water and nature is a wicked mistress. There are quality good boats available at 40k or less....but they don't have dual wheels and walk through transoms. Check out a Kendall 32 or a Hans Christian 34, a Cal 34 or 39, Pacific SeaCraft 37...there are many quality boats out there with a little work and care will carry you anywhere. A Hunter isn't one of them.

It was a typical 35-38 foot boat with a rear cabin, but it had an opening rear hatch that opened to a porch almost at water level on the stern. Don Lallier- 85 years old and an old salt from Connecticut ( Lived there for 45 years on the coast- Niantic, Ct worked in a shipyard in the 1940-50s after school and on weekends, scraping, caulking, seam compounding and painting 40 footers. Brought a 40-foot wood sailboat when I was 14 for a 400 comic book collection and $ 20.00 from a kid that was a rich kid. Sailed it single-handed to Fishers Island, Block Island etc. in Long Island Sound out of Niantic.. Moved to Florida for 12 years on the gulf coast then to my present location in Nebraska. Really enjoy your Videos ...

In the market at these kinda price points and, as with others, love the series. But can't understand why Morgan 38s haven't been given a mention so far. Solid, attractive designs, highly respected and enough examples on the market in the 30 and 40000 dollar brackets to make them well worthy of consideration. But maybe I'm biased having owned a 382 :)

What would be better spend $20k on a boat needing $20k in work or a $40k boat in good condition? Thanks for the video keep them coming.

That depends on size. A newer small boat for $40k is the easy route. And older boat ten feet longer for $20k that needs work. Depends what you want I suppose.

A 20k boat needs way more than 20k to get it where it needs to be for cruising. We're there.

Personally, I don't see my self as a racer. Probably not a trans-oceanic cruiser either. I'm more of a liveaboard, this side of the ocean cruiser.

Why do you dislike Catalina’s ? I bought a Catalina 28 or two with a sugar scoop and walk-through transom tall rig and deep keel For $26,000 a few years ago and I’ve only put a few thousand dollars more and some special things. A great pocket cruiser and weekend or an all-around day sailor.
