How do you know if a word is a DE-word or a HET-word?
Unfortunately, there are hardly any rules for this. As a native speaker of Dutch, for example, you 'automatically' learn from an early age that it is DE pen and HET boek.
Dutch has two definite articles: HET for neuter nouns and DE for masculine and feminine words. Those who have learned Dutch as their native language usually know for themselves whether a word gets de or it. But for people who learn Dutch at a later age, it is for the most part a matter of looking up and learning it by heart. There are hardly any rules for this. Fortunately, there are a few, although there are always exceptions.
