As a younger cosplayer, here’s a few things I’ve learned!! 1.) Buy costumes that can be used for more than one character! For example, I use my ‘Japanese schoolgirl’ outfit for Toga, Ibuki, Yachi, and Komaru! 2.) If you’re a teenager (specifically teenager, because younger people shouldn’t really be watching Danganronpa....) who cosplays from Danganronpa, I highly suggest putting a shirt under most of the costumes. My Junko cosplay is a very very low V-neck. I simply ordered a size up (so it’s not skin-tight) and wear a black shirt underneath! There’s also no shame in not wearing the cannon outfit, especially if it’s skin-tight or can put you at risk to those pervy old men on the internet. 3.) Closet cosplays can be some of the best cosplays! 4.) Be safe. The internet can be a scary place, so please, please do not share ANY personal information. This includes your name. (I suggest going by a fake name online so it’s harder for any old men to track you) 5.) I know you want to be like all the cool cosplayers making thirst traps online...but this puts you in danger. Not all people are good people, they can very easily save the video and spread it around to bad websites and forums. Please please just wait until your older and your brain is more developed and less impulsive!!! Have fun!! :)

Same! I haven’t really told my parents I want to be a cosplayer (I trust them! I’m just looking for the right moment), so I haven’t really cosplayed yet (except for an anime wig I got for Halloween), however, the character I want to cosplay, Shouta Aizawa, has a very simple outfit. It consists of a gray scarf, a belt (which would have to be hand-made, because it’s pretty unique), some boots, a baggy black shirt, and some baggy black pants. It’s a win/win for me, since most is just daily-life clothing ^^

not me crying while reading about everyone supportive parents and how i get lectures on wanting an “ugly orange hoody with big black bunny ears on” they won’t listen my dad said i have to make the outfits and i am planing it. wait till i come out of my room and show them me in cosplay hahahaha

Unfortunately not all parents will be as supportive... at first. And that comes from a place of not understanding. Sit down if you can and watch this video with them. And if they have any questions, they can always ask me as an older cosplayer. And if we were to look on the bright side, if they force you to make your cosplays, you are going to be learning skills now and refining your craft at a young age

I'm now sewing a shirt from my dad different bc it's too big and my mom was like"why do you need this? You're weird" Lmao I just said "you'll see when I'm done"

I remember when I was 12 telling my mom I wanted to cosplay. Wasn't a shock. Friends and I always did little skit videos using what we had in the "costume trunk", this was just that evolving. And she and my dad were so supportive they helped pay for my education in fashion and costume, which I NEVER would have figured out I loved if it were not for cosplay

How about 4 generations. . . . I am the grandmother that does Cosplay. While my mother started me on that path when I was 6. . . she has passed on now but she would LOVE how this world has moved on from "Just theater" to now be accepted most everywhere. I taught my daughters to costume, they don't do it as much as I do, but they still use all the skills. And now I am teaching my grandchildren (specifically a 6, 13, 15 & 17yo, two girls two boys). I have taken them to their first Comicons, their first Ren Faires, and Pirate festivals as well as SCA. I feel strongly about teaching the next generations so much so that I take on apprentices. Thank you for keeping that in mind when you do your videos.

(I tried with the language- that’s why I used “parents and guardians” so that it could include people like yourself too as I have known some amazing grandparents who have been cosplaying with their grandkids. That is insanely gorgeous when it is seen at conventions.)

:( yeah its difficult somtimes..i cosplayed Emma from the promised neverland to school today, and i got multiple rude remarks and people who just plain out asked "why?"

My mom was the person who first introduced me to cosplay and my little 10 year old mind was blown that people could play dress up professionally. That was about 5 years ago. Since then I've learned so much about crafting, sewing, and cosplaying that I've started making costumes for both me and her. Together we like to do group cosplays and going to cons has become a huge bonding experience for us. You are both the inspiration from where I am sitting ^_^ to have that bonding experience is something I wish I had. I got into cosplay when I was pretty much just leaving home, so my parents never got too much involved. I think both of my folks would have enjoyed it if they gave themselves the permission to get involved with me (and if I was a bit younger when I started)

I ask my mom “What can I do to get this cosplay? It’s $___.” and she will tell me how many chores I have to do, what grades I have to get, or something similar. We just started this agreement, and I have earned one Monokuma cosplay and I will be able to order it in a few weeks!

I'm a 13 year old girl that always used to love cosplay, and I'm still aiming to be a cosplayer someday! The huge problem is,,, My family doesn't support me, and always says mean things to me when I try asking them help or just simply asking their permission to do cosplay, even if it is unprofessional and I have to work it out alone you know? They say cosplay it's "retarded stuff", etc. Plus they think I can't cosplay male characters only because I'm a girl. Do you have any tips or advices to what I should do about it? 😞

Tough one. I think over time they will change their mind. I would say just continue crafting. They probably don’t understand that crossplay is very normal as it is about the love for the character, not because you want to be the opposite gender (but if you did, that is okay too!) Take this time over the next 3-5 years to craft cosplays where you can and build up the artistic side. They may not get it yet, but over time as you build more and more impressive outfits, they will. My parents didn’t understand it either, though I was double your age when I started. However over time, my parents have accepted it and have seen the opportunities it has given me and are now proud with what I have achieved

Bel- you could always start small. Cosplaying using items from your closet or thrifting. Maybe learn a little bit is sewing if you don’t know how to yet. Build your skills until you can afford to buy your own cosplay/ tools :)

I have a feeling my parents dont like it as much bc they call it costume making rather than cosplaying

I never had a problem with my mother’s side and my mother when it comes to cosplaying but my father and his side of the family are relatively split about accepting my hobby of dressing up as a woman or a cartoon character. My aunts and uncles (on my father’s side) were rather vocal about their opinions about why I dressed up as Audrey Hepburn or Eliza Schuyler and if this hobby is gonna be just a phase but I told them I will not stop cosplaying and dressing up more feminine.

At the end of the day, you have to live your life as you want to and be true to yourself. If you feel like the best version of you dressing more feminine, then do it. They may not like it, but they will come around one day I hope.

Here is a tip for making cosplays that I learnt; If you can find one that is the right material, texture or thickness, you can use old blankets if you don't have any fabric!

stuff i learnt as a young cosplayer: try doing characters you can closet cosplay, i mean characters who wear normal clothes, examples are tpn characters, L, and that stuff, plus if you dont wanna look odd to the normies when you go home you can just remove your wig and pretend it never happened try doing simpler characters, if your younger you probably have less experience so try simpler characters if you are gonna do characters who have unique clothes that cant be closet cosplayed like miu iruma, check places like amazon or aliexpress or cosplay websites but always check reviews wear shorts under your skirt if your wearing one, incase you drop something or trip on some weird way like mikan people will probably see up your skirt but you dont have to be young to do this, i suggest this to everyone you probably havent gone to a lot of conventions or places you cosplay and wouldnt have much experience but if someone follows you go up to a group of people or pair ( as long as there or 2 or more people but i suggest around 4 ) and tell them, you dont need to know them and ask them if you can stick with them till they stop following plus you might even find people with the same interests and make a new friend try not to do characters in showy outfits, but if you do wear skin colored clothes under if you have these stuff you shouldn't throw them away, these are super useful: sailor fuku ( school outfit ) short brown/black wig white button up shirt black skirt blue skirt ribbon of any color black or white knee high socks

That is so wonderful. It is seriously such a wonderful bonding experience from what I’ve seen and heard.

My mom's gotten use to my cosplay adventures. I started getting seriously involved after university but she is now the official stitch ripper! I even got her to sew more due to having to make masks. She keeps saying 'no more crazy projects!' No glittery fabric!. All while knowing I'm back in figure skating and dresses need to vomit sparkle. I even belong to a local sewing forum.

My parents are kinda supportive, but also just plain scared tbh😂 the sad thing is they said they're not alloying em to buy any wigs for new characters because, "I don't need them" well obviously I don't need them... But cosplay is something that makes me happy and it's a good coping method through the lockdown :') I'll probably find a way to change there mind or smth... :')

You could try making paper wigs! I’ve started doing it and it’s super inexpensive. I literally used construction paper for $1 my brother had, and a pack of glue sticks I bought to glue other drawings to my sketchpad. You can make really cool looking stuff if you’re creative with it, so if that doesn’t work out I’d give it a try.

2:40 you can also make the costumes less revealing by adding cloth to revealing areas, choosing a different costume that they wore, or doing a closet cosplay.

I wanna share this, because I want someone to tell me what my parents would (most likely) say if I told them I wanted to cosplay. I was in the car with my mom and I asked her “Hey mom, do you know what cosplay is?” she responded with yes, and we talked about what people cosplay for a bit and I asked “What would you think if I started cosplaying?” She said she wouldn’t care, she wants me to be happy and it’s cool. My parents are kind of weird with me liking anime and stuff. Idk. I would like to know if my parents would say yes to cosplay. I feel like my extended family would judge me or something. If you like my hero academia, my personal first cosplays were Ochaco Uraraka, Himiko Toga, and Hitoshi Shinsou (in that order)

Fun fact! I’m a 16 years old girl and one day I tryed to cosplay a character who looked like me, plus I have her outfit in my closet (for SNK fans I think you all know who Gaby is). Then I saw it was quite good so I send a picture of the character and my cosplay to my mom and I was like « haha! I’m Gaby Braun now! » and I was REALLY surprised when she told me « Woaw that so good! You should post it! » so I did it and now I have cosplay Instagram account and one of my favorite cosplayer is following me! All of that thanks to my mom! Don’t be scared of telling to your parents that you wanna cosplay, they will always support you no matter what! (Sorry for my bad English I’m french)

A tip for older teens! (16-18) buddy up when at a con! Never go alone in cosplay, esspecially big armour or skimpier cosplays! Somtimes you need someone to hold your stuff, sew you in, or be an extra layer of protection around creeps! when I first did cosplay I wanted my dad to buy me a wig cause I didn’t/don’t have my own source of income but I hadn’t told him about cosplay ever before so when I asked him he was weirded out a bit cause he’d never heard of cosplay. he did get me the wig tho, and he still thinks it’s weird but he also just lets me like what I like. he even gets me cosplay things for my bday and he even got me a sewing machine this Christmas so I can make my own cosplays now.

That is so awesome - a great example of a parent who doesn't quite get it but supports it all the same!

I think most parents would be fine with kids showing a bit of skin like their stomach, if their around 12+ :) lots of kids wear bikinis after all. It could make them feel a bit more confident with their body so later in their life, when they cosplay they will be used to showing a bit of skin :)

A good point, however, we are talking about a public space not the beach. If it is something you would wear to the movies with friends, then that is a good point to work from

@5:34 What I did when I first started was I didn't buy the whole entire costume and props premade fully assembled all at once, I planned it out over the course of months in advance and bought each of the items and materials one piece at a time and then assembled/constructed it all together on my own.

My 7 year old cousin loves cosplaying and I always cosplay with her 😄 (She dresses up as Yachi and I dress up as Kiyoko from Haikyuu in the manager uniforms but we are not open about it on like tiktok/KZread as people make weird comments so her mom didn’t let us be open about it anymore so we can only cosplay for role play ☹️)

I think a good cosplay for11/ 12 year olds is Runa from kakegurui because it’s appropriate and easy. It was my first cosplay and it was easy to make, comfy and an awesome character!

This is a tricky one and needs to be approached with care. I think it depends on the character/ situation and that conversation should be brought into the discussion. If you are going to be cosplaying a female character, then explain that you just really enjoy the character. If it is a male character wearing a skirt for comedic sake (I think there was something like that in BNHA), then explain that to your mum. Good luck!

I think asking for Amazon gift cards is a great way to start and it’s safe. I would still suggest you tell your mum if you haven’t already- I’m sure that she won’t mind if you explain that it’s safe and fun.

I ordered a runa cosplay, and my mom thinks it’s a little weird but she doesn’t question it, my dad honestly probably has no clue what I’m talking about when I say the word anime, and I think I will be able to use the uniform for other characters in kakegurui not just runa, and I would need different wigs, socks etc. runa will be my first cosplay, and I think her character is okay since I’m 12, but yeah, also Tysm for the tips! I will use these and keep these in mind! I love your videos so much! :)

As someone who doesn't plan on having children, but if it happens if happens, I would love to cosplay with my child or family. Especially as they get older and they can be made together, it can always become a learning experience. Like it takes trial and error, things take effort sometimes, or hard work can and does pay off when you put your mind to it. I’m on the younger side of cosplaying and remember as long as something is not highly revealing you might be able to change it a bit to make it suit you better for example later this year I will be cosplaying jinx at a convention who has a cropped tank top which is pretty short you can change it and add a longer shirt as long as you look vaguely like you’re character you’re good BUT remember if you dress up as a character from something that is either majorly gory or anything like that people will assume you are 18+ which is the opposite of what you want I also recommend going with someone who is on the older side of things

things I learnt from starting out as a young cosplayer :D: 1. the wigs of cosplays can be re-used for other cosplays or other uses (yes, even the excess hair for wig styling I suppose) now..as a starter myself, I haven't even touched a cosplay I really liked (although I ordered mine :D) I still tend to use pieces from own wardrobe and cosplays mixed together for a good cost. 2. the actual cosplay costume parts can be re-used into everyday things or cross-cosplay (where you dress another character in your other cosplay; different fandoms per say) 3. for soes, don't even worry about what you character wears, I only ever wear 1 pair of shoes (converse above ankle) and it looks fine. 4. when shopping for cosplay I tend to check the prices very thoroughly for each piece as I'm not the one paying for it (in this scenario) so as a word of advice, please check the prices on your cosplays! (less pieces of a character tend to cost cheaper!) the really cheap 20 bucks cosplays are probably not worth (in SGD) buying. aim for something around the 30-40 area as a beginner! 5. corsets, belts etc. I wouldn't recommend for anyone bellow 15-16 (this is only my own opinion) since it can be...well....a little odd. 6. the character you are cosplaying from is recommended to stay in your age range of watching. I know a lot of people around the age I am (12-15) cosplaying from places like kakegurui, and that's totally fine but people might treat you in the age range, be cautious! 7. the internet for cosplays can be a bit of a thirst trap or places where people might track you down so places like tik tok please don't expose anything like names, addresses, phone numbers etc. unless you want to be found. 8. conventions are another thing, places like these for young cosplayers I suggest going with a parent/legal guardian. like the one above, same reasons. better to go with someone who doesn't have much interest as they can see danger before you can if there happens to be any. honestly, my first full cosplay hasn't even arrived yet so I wouldn't really know what else to say or if anything I said is even correct, just correct me if I'm wrong :D Also when cosplaying: YOU MUST HAVE FUN!! its a rule..

Firstly, it is 100% okay to feel anxiety in relation to being judged by the people that we love. However, I’m going to take a leap here and say that your parents want you to be happy. If you are worried that they will think it strange or a waste of time or money, maybe sit down with them and together watch this video together. If they have any questions, they can reach out to me (as an older cosplayer) and I can help explain that it’s no weird and has given me some get experiences like travelling to Japan twice!

I just need to tell them that I want to cosplay Techno- and explaining that: If i wanted to do a hufflepuff cosplay, i would have made a lot more effort to it, but i didn’t. I made a technoblade one, and that’s what I want to do So i want to go as Techno- I’m already getting a cape from a friend who can sew(He offered, I owe him 8 bucks- luckily i’m his friend, so i got a discount of 7 bucks- it would be 15 if we weren’t so close as friends) and i’m very excited-

Im 12 and I wanna try cosplaying. I live alone with my mother and she doesnt have a stable job and we dont have a lot of money. I told my mom recently and she just said, "Eh, really? Hmm.. Okay then.." and just nodded. Im scared that I might get judged for it at school and stuff and my friends might think its weird. Is there any tips of how to overcome these fears and such? edit: i know this comment is old but thank you for the help! My tips would be try to care less what other people think of you- which I know is hard to do. True friends will support eachother even if they don’t understand it. My second tip is try cosplaying with things from your wardrobe first, and start learning skills like sewing (if you don’t already know how to do that). Maybe try getting an old quilt or bedsheet from a thrift store and turn that into a cosplay (check out my $13 cinderella dress video or regency dress video for a bit more information on what I mean :)) Good luck

What i reccomend as a young cosplayer: If you have anything for who you wanna be, use those things. For example, i used my white shirt, drew on it with permission and wore a black skirt (basically doing ibuki mioda) Ask permission to draw on a white shirt.

im 14 and i really want a runa cosplay. kakegurui is a 15- im aware my parents know i watch it and are fine with it (my dad has seen the show and is fine with it) her costume is not revealing at all apart from maybe the skirt but is that a bad idea? my worry is older people at cons and on tiktok that might be creepy towards it or me. any advice on this?

Hi! I actually got my runa cosplay for my 15th birthday and my parents were completely fine with it, I think the best part about runa is that her hoodie actually comes down to just above the knees and isn't so revealing as only the front is showing! Hopefully you get the cosplay 😊

I really enjoy it! ..I’m just glad my parents have seen the show I cosplay from because one of the characters I want to cosplay wears fishnet stockings that just barely show (it’s under some suit pants, it’s not revealing- Beelzebub from Good Omens) and I would rather not ask for a pair without them having context 😭

I would say a good investment when it comes to cosplays is a Cricket. You can use them for practically anything! Like, I am trying to do a Sapnap cosplay, and for the white t-shirt, I am just using a white t-shirt and the flame made from the Cricket! I think they are worth it, because you can use them for other stuff, too! Like wall decor, homemade labels, ect.

This is some great advise thank you. However i have wanted to try cosplay for a while now and its a age appropriate cosplay(its Emma from the promised Neverland) However i feel as if my parents may judge me by saying things like "But your older why are you still playing dress up?" or "its not Halloween" when this is a thing i believe i could enjoy a lot and is so much more than things like "dress up"? How would you suggest telling parents that you would like to give it a try?

Well in my mind it isn’t “dressing up”- it’s not a cheap costume that you wear to be childish or because it is a particular day. Cosplay is about expressing your joy over the character or craftsmanship (of you are making it). I view it more as an art form, like painting or sculpture or fashion design, than as the costumes you wear for Halloween. Maybe go from that perspective?

I am sorry she doesn't understand it... at the moment. She is most likely concern only for you and she is reacting out of fear of the unknown. Be patient with her, and try slowly introducing anime and cosplay - focus on the craft, or the artwork - maybe something that she can connect with.

I'm going to be honest, darling in the franxx in my opinion has kinda a good amount of fan service and if you where to post your cosplays online then you might be kinda you know (sexualized) bc men are just like that but if your family is fine with her and you set rules for yourself I'd say you'd be fine (but I think I'd be better to go with a character from mha or tbhk or just something a little more age appropriate just to play it safe until your a little bit older ;)

My mom is quite supportive of me cosplaying, she’ll buy me wigs, or even call me up when she’s at the dollar store and ask if I need anything for costumes. What’s cool is that she does crafts, so she can help me if I need it. I actually haven’t considered any revealing characters to dress up as, simply because I’m not comfortable with that. Two of the characters I cosplay are dudes, Deku, and Technoblade, the only girls I have so far are Six from little nightmares and a cottagecore elf girl. My mom actually really liked my headband I made for my cottagecore elf! My Dad actually also likes cosplay, he wants to go to a big con and dress up as Bobba from Star Wars. I actually budget my wallet spending the best I can, I have been saving money from Christmas and birthdays since it seems to be everyone’s go to gift. I think my favourite cosplay is a TV head I did awhile back, instead of using a computer or something I just used a box, My mom actually made the head for me! Once things are normal I plan to actually buy tickets to go to a con. I want to learn how to sew and stuff so I can make my own outfits or pieces of clothing.

I get a lot of my cheaper ones off eBay or aliexpress. Basically I will buy wigs that are between $30-50 and the quality is generally good in that price range. Otherwise. I will get arda wig but that gets expensive

My parents and mom's side of family (except for my cousin) aren't alright with me performing this hobby, but the grandma from my dad's side often compliments my wig, make up and costume and sometimes reffers to me as the chwracter i'm dressed up as:)

Hi there! The first thing I will say is remember to have fun and don’t be afraid to try new techniques as you being crafting. If it’s not perfect the first time, that is okay too! Nothing is perfect- but it is about getting better and better and challenging yourself. As for store recommendations, I would say if you don’t mind a wait, aliexpress is good for prices when first starting out. Wigs are available from aliexpress, eBay and Amazon :)

As an younger cosplayer (I may be late) another good tip that fits every age; just because your cosplay isn’t the exact same as the character, it doesn’t mean you’re not cosplaying them! Not to mention that creativity is a great thing, and it can even make cosplay an incredible art! For example, my skirt of junko’s cosplay isn’t the exact same and my tie doesn’t have the white part. It’s all black with the symbol. And I’m still cosplaying Junko!

I actually want to start cosplaying! my dad has no problem with it (he watches anime too and cosplays some characters from different shows himself) but my mom doesn’t really get dressing up like that for fun. she doesn’t judge for it- she just doesn’t understand it’s a passionate hobby of mine. I’m getting my cosplay in time for a next convention i’m going to with my dad, actually! and some of my other family members are going to tag along (My brothers- sister. etc.)

Haha yeah my dad is kinda like your mom. He doesn't understand much of the stuff I'm passionate for. He doesn't understand stuff like anime, manga, vocaloid...oh, I could make a list. I remember watching anime with him one time, he didn't understand but still watched it. He doesn't make fun of it (much), he just doesn't really understand it all.

Yeah, these tips really did help me. However, no matter how much people say that there is no age limit I am still ashamed to cosplay because I’m young. I once got like a random motivation to cosplay and tried making a closet cosplay of William Afton which turned out pretty bad but hey. At least I tried. If I like buy the costumes, it may look decent but my problem with being ashamed of everything is really a huge reason of why I’m not cosplaying yet.

There is nothing to be shamed about! You are young and new - you are at the start of your journey and will learn skills as you go along. Nobody is perfect on their 1st or even 15th go! In fact, I've lost count how many cosplays I've made and I still don't think one is perfect. Try not to be so hard on yourself :)

My parents have been very helpful and supportive with me being a cosplayer. My dad actually bought my wig and my outfit, mom my has a friend to that has been helping me like giving me some makeup and they are also gonna do a cosplay with me. I am very thankful to everyone who has helped me😊

I'm a 13 year old cosplayer and a tip I have for revealing cosplays is to wear leggings under miniskirts and to wear beige shirts under shirts with breast windows
