Not always trying to sell items has been a game changer for me too. The mental benefit has been way better than making a little bit of extra money. Not only does this mean less clutter, but I don’t add extra tasks to my to-do list and feel like there are always unnecessary pending tasks. When I’m struggling with this, I imagine someone else being excited to have the donated item and it bringing them joy! 🙂

This is so true. I had loads of clothes set aside to sell on Vinted and discovered people seem to expect good stuff for what amounts to a derisory amount of money. Instead I have sent 12 bags to charity and the benefits far outweigh the storage and the effort to sell!

Thank you for saying that sometimes it's necessary for us to use the area under our beds for storage. I have a storage container that fits under our bed for a few extra blankets that we like to keep in case we need them for guests. I don't want to take up the space in our linen closet for them because we seldom use them. So many organizers tell us to never place anything under the bed. It's so nice to hear that it's okay to use that space if needed.

I absolutely hate storing stuff under the bed, but with very limited storage space and a husband who insists on keeping loads and loads of stuff "just in case" and absolutely refuses to discuss it, there really isn't any other option, unless I want open spaces filled up with clutter. I'd kept all of my children's art and craftwork, school books, stories, etc; and I mean ALL. My three children are all approaching middle age! Their stuff filled 4 or 5 big boxes. I had to declutter much of it, and they didn't want it. It broke my heart, but the mantra that kept me going was: If EVERYTHING is special, then NOTHING is. I'm not finished yet, but I'm down to one big box. When I'm finished, I will be left with the special pieces, and I can give them the space and honour they deserve.

We used to live in a similarly sized 774 sq.ft 2 bedroom condo. It was more than enough space for our family of 4. We since moved to a house twice the size, but find that we don't even use half the square footage. Less stuff makes small spaces seem vast.

Not bringing things in is the Key. I think I Eames aware of the fact that I am a "Consumer". I noticed I bring things in all the time but I never take anything out. My niece is like you. She let's the "stores" store her things until she needs them. At this second I just realized...they are called "Stores" for a reason. They "store" things until we come in and buy them. Y....I never thought I'd this until just now. Also, my nephew says "don't take anything you don't need". We ALL know this. You have great points! Thank You for this video!

Fun vlog. I have no garage or basement. I chose to buy a house without because I knew my husband would fill it with crap. We have an attic.. mainly full of his stuff and moving boxes. But also suitcases, camping/skiing equipment and xmas decor. All my other stuff I keep in the main house... seasonal decor and paperwork, craft stuff, DIY tools are on shelves in my Harry Potter under the stairs cupboard. I have a garden shed for bikes and garden equipment.. but nothing else is in there... just decluttered it again and got rid of garden games we don't use anymore..still a few garden things i could declutter... but they are on "probation" for this gardening season.. otherwise I will bin them.

We lived in two apartments before buying our first home. The first apartment had two bedrooms, guess what the 2nd one was used for? The 2nd apartment had storage lockers in the basement. We had two before we moved. Our first house had a basement. Our second home was larger and also had a basement, but it was only 1/3 full when we moved in. Now, we've been in our home 30+ years and it's packed to the gills. Before moving to Assisted Living, my parents lived in a condo with only a small storage closet. After we moved them to Assisted Living, my wife and I (both retired) spent 2 months in the condo. That got me thinking about how much/little we'd actually need to live comfortably and how completely out of control our home (3000ish sq. ft.) is. My problem is that I realize it's time to declutter/simplify/ do our Swedish Death Cleaning, but my wife isn't ready to let go of stuff we haven't used and never will. I keep trying to get her to see my point, but she won't/can't. I watch these videos with admiration/envy. Hopefully my bride will come around, before we're unable to do anything about it.

One drawback to not buying at least a few multiples is that shopping has become a horribly time-consuming and miserable experience. Hi! So I suggested under the beds or up high on shelves for things les frequently used. Or, up high in any open spaces (if you have them) above cabinets - like in the kitchen, a lot of people have a space between their cabinets and the ceiling. 😊

Yes, mostly in older homes you have a usable attic. In the desert southwest and in FL you do not have basements. Many of us here in the Sunshine state have storage buildings in our backyard. These are way smaller than a basement and a good portion is used for lawn mowers and other yard equipment

  • @shelly410

@tarynmaria_ I already use the space under the bed as closet storage for belts, scarves, purses t-shirts, and winter clothing. Above the cabinets in my kitchen requires a very tall ladder, so storing anything there would be very inconvenient, not to mention that I would have to build a shelf up there on top of the cabinets because they have that fake molding along the front edges. I guess I thought the boxes you mentioned were for additional things we needed to access on a regular basis, which is why I am wondering where to store them.

I agree. She briefly mentioned Dana K White and honesty, that is the number one tip IMO when you don't have storage space. Her container method explains it perfectly, no matter if you downsize or have a place with no storage - that means your "container" got smaller and if you don't want the clutter around, it's time to declutter until your stuff comfortably fits the amount of space. We used to live in a 3 bedroom apartment, then in a 2 bedroom with 2 large walk-in closets, then a 2 bedroom with nearly no storage. When we lived in the larger spaces, I did toy rotation, we had different kitchen appliances, large vacuum, each of us lots of clothes. Thanks to Dana K White, I understood that our "container" space simply had changed. And started decluttering accordingly. We have all our clothes (houshold of 5) in one closet, everyone of us has clothes for 5 days, I do laundry at least 2 times a week, so no problem. Most people wear the same 20% of their clothes all the time anyway - so that's essentially what we kept. Living in the south, so we each have a jacket and some clothes that we can layer for colder days but even in a colder climate, when you only keep clothes for a week, it will fit any standard clothes closet. Toy rotation is the biggest lie of consumerism IMO. Before I started toy rotation, we had so little - with rotation, there is "no harm" in more and more toys. We're down to toys our kids play with at least weekly on a regular basis, which is still a lot (could easily fo down to the stuff they only use daily by keeping pretend and small world stuff but even years later I have such bad buyer's regret getting all those wooden educational toys that I just can't get myself to declutter them - it's my last big decluttering hurdle). Kitchen items we're down to what we use monthly - we have a really small kitchen and if it would be any smaller, the slow cooker and air fryer would need to go. All those appliances take so much space when most of the time any gadgets or appliances can easily be replaced with knife, pot, oven. Seasonal decor takes a lot of space too. So I got rid of most and now we do seasona arts/crafts each year to decorate, which is so much fun for the kids - and I'm down to one small tote of seasonal decor, which pretty much hold our Christmas tree decor. So yes, no stroage space means accepting the "container" that you have and declutter accordingly. Which often means a change in life style. It also may mean a closet, dresser, or cabinet for the things you do need. Which may look different than a pintrest minimalist but it's also more honest - I have to laugh every time I see the basement of the minimal mom 😂 most people who rent in apartments don't have that kind of space. Her living area may look minimal but I always imagine how it would look like if all that stuff down there would need to be in her living space and that always makes me realize how realistic our space is even though no one would call us minimalist when they entered our apartment, even though we have so much less. Space is a limit. So if someone feels cluttered, look at what you truly use constantly - everything beyond that is just convenience.

@@ronjab4586 I love the Minimal Mom, but her basement is huge! And what about her outbuildings? My house would be immaculate if I had those extra storage spaces. I live in the UK, and have almost zero storage space. The loft (attic) is accessible by ladder only, and can only really take a few boxes. We have no basement or garage. Most British homes have no separate laundry room - our washing machine (and dryer, if we have one) is in the kitchen.

@supergran1000 exactly. I'm originally also from Europe, so used to washing machine in the kitchen or tiny bathroom, zero built-in closets, no garage and a tiny basement area that usually just so holds the winter tires 😆 My US husband was so shocked with this latest apartment of ours that has nearly no storage space while I still find it impressive - one of the walk in closets in our last apartment was nearly as big as my last tiny studio apartment that I had in Europe 😆 so of course our apartment looked minimalist while we lived there - not so much now even though we downsized so much. But I learned that as long as it's functional and not above my clutter threshold, I don't mind. Storage space here in the US is so easily available: garages, crawl space, attic, basements, and additional storage units everywhere - in the end it just makes people hang onto their stuff even when they don't use it, it's a lot harder to clutter up the available living space and you need to confront decluttering a lot sooner
