I put Mazama in the front and back, as I have a large tree over the back in the morning and in the middle of the day my front yard is shadowed by my north facing two story spanish house. So far so good. I did put Midnight on my strip which is always in the sun.

Last year I killed off my K31, added in 13 cubic yards of soil to level my lawn, installed an irrigation and planted new TTTF. It was tough. It sucked but it was worth it. Specially having an irrigation now.

You described my exact issue. I have bunching tall fescue in my lawn. I made the mistake 4 years ago by putting a "hodge-podge" of different grass seeds in my lawn and this year it dramatically looked terrible. I decided 2 weeks ago that the whole lawn needed to be killed off to start new bermuda. The problem ...however... will always be neighboring lawns that are untreated for weeds.

luckily i have 4 MONTH reprieve because we are either frozen ground or covered with snow in Central NY...but after dethatching and scarifying and over seeding, it will be interesting to see what April and May brings this spring...all thanks to great advice from the Lawn Ginga

This video felt like it was for me! I just killed off multiple patches of bunching tall fescue last fall that I thought for years was freakishly resilient crab grass 😂 Now to pack some dirt on top and I think I'm gonna seed in a week or two, cheaper than sod! Thank you to the Ginja for giving me tips when I was completely clueless 👍👍

Having experienced inconsistent lawn results for the longest time, I would recommend not using mixed grass seeds. Choose one type of grass seed that you think would be best and find separate sun and shade tolerant versions to put into different parts of the lawn. My lawn did not start looking good until I did this even when the fertilizing, dethatching, and watering was properly done.

Wow I've learned a lot from your channel about disease and pest control I had areas in my lawn that would have the same problem every year. I started looking for patterns and I found a few that were significant. Some were fungus due to too much water in shade. Another was bunching fescue like you just described in this video I did not know it then but I cut it out when I cut grass out for a tree ring and replaced it looks great now.

I prefer sod as well. I used to only be a seed guy but after redoing my landscaping last year I went the sod route and have never looked back. Still have to water the hell out of if but same with seed and less BS to mess with. Yes, the bunching tall fescue is a pain!

I bought a brand new home exactly a year ago in CT. Builder did a terrible job with the seeding, etc. Had a desert last summer with “crabgrass” everywhere, it was awful. Hired a company to bring in some good topsoil, rake, and seed. Well it looked a lot better at the end of fall, but as I became more and more of a lawn nerd, I used Tenacity in the spring, power raked, raked by hand, got rid of rocks, etc. and then put down both perennial rye and KBG. Well... then within about two weeks, the weeds returned and I was standing in a field of hay. I finally downloaded an app and discovered that I have an orchard grass infestation. Can I simply “burn” the whole lawn with Roundup in later summer, rake the dead stuff off, and seed to start over without using machinery, etc? Thanks so much!

checkout my lawn reno from this year in the playlist. I didn't remove the grass. I used a dethatcher and scarifier to get seed to soil contact and it worked great.

I would add a 5th reason. If you want or need to change the grade. Our property is slightly sloped but the back yard was never properly graded or smoothed. i need to get a 4x4 mower or a better dental plan because mowing rattles the fillings from my teeth. I have tried to add address this with top dressing, but have come to the conclusion that removal, grading, smoothing and replanting in the best option for time, money and end result. My lawn last summer was dark lush green perfect, not one weed. The nicest in the entire neighborhood.. Anyone that walked by complimented us and asked us our trick.. It took alot of blood, sweat, and tears but we did it.... Then mid summer weeds started coming through and I couldnt control them so I called a reputable lawn company.. they came to spray and 5 days later my entire beautiful lawn was brown and thin!!!!!!!! I wish I could post pics in here to show you before and after. I wanted to cry. The lawn company told me it was my fault for to much water. But what's the odds it died 5 days after their guy sprayed for weeds. I live on a corner lot so I have a ton of grass. We started over this fall, new seed and it started looking great again. Cant wait to see what spring brings us.. by the way we are from NJ so it's cold and in hibernation now. Love your videos. I learned alot from you!

I have a question about pre-emergent herbicides. Which one will cause the least root punning of established lawn grasses: Prodiamine vs. Dithiopyr vs Pendimethalin during a spring application? I need to make sure that the established lawn grass has the maximum root potential to survive the summer heat. I have problems with crabgrass, yellow oxalis, spurge, and yellow nutsedge in the warmer months. I also have problems with Poa annua, and Black Medic, in the cooler months. I currently use Scotts Starter fertilizing with fall overseeing with mesotrione/tenacity. It helped with the yellow oxalis, sedge, and black medic. It might have helped with Poa annua but I am not sure, as Poa annua is the worst weed of them all. How do you eliminate Poa if you have to overseed in the fall?

That bunching tall fescue is my biggest issue. Regular applications of weed killer and over seeding with the same sun/shade seed everytime has been working for me. Not at the same time obviously.

Hi Heather. Moss can be a pain to get control of. Control being the key word. You'll want to use a dethatcher similar to the sun joe dethatcher, the tine based dethatchers are far less invasive to the lawn. You can use them once a month or more. You'll also want to consider doing regular treatments of ferrous sulfate

I had about 70% weeds in my yard. One side is bahia, the other side is St augustine. They kind of meet by my front door. It's been tough but I killed most of the weeds and the grass is doing well. It's been about 4 months. Wondering how it's going to look in 2 years. Hoping the St augustine takes over but I'm thinking maybe its time to start over. We own a excavator. Ugh! This grass game is tough!

yeah, two species that are very different from one another. i find bahia is the more difficult one to maintain due to the difficulty on finding the right types of herbicides for bahia. there are so many herbicides that will kill bahia and not st augustine. it can get super frustrating to maintain.

I thought I was going to need to do this to part of my back yard with creeping bent grass in my tall fescue. Then, I learned about Tenacity and it knocked it out (2 applications) while also growing new grass to fill in. I still have some places to overseed again, but it's 95% fescue when it was less than 50% fescue. Tenacity, good seeds, starter fert, water and more water, done.

I have tenacity and honestly I feel like weed b gone works better ( yes I mix it correctly ) I just haven’t had great luck with tenacity at all and especially For the price

Is it ok to fertilize fescue in the winter? Lawn looks ok, but lots of brown and yellow on tips of the fescue. Most likely frost/freeze damage. I wonder if fertilizing with a 16-4-8 would help? Im in Greenville SC. Might do a soil test too.

The answer is it's okay to do it but it may not do what you think it will. It all is dependent on ground temps. if you have warm season grass the ground temps need to be above 63 degrees to make any difference. if you have warm season grass the ground temps need to be above 40 to make any bit of a difference.

I currently have centipede grass. Would you recommend over seeding with a mix of centipede and Bermuda? I live in Columbia Sc and it gets really hot here in the summer. The lawn will get full sun with no shade.

bermuda takes forever to germinate but its the best for full sun in my opinion. it will be thicker and you have to do a lot of care maintenance to keep it nice. so if you want less hassle go with centipede but my feelings as a lawn guy I prefer bermuda out of those two choices.

Please help! We are moving to a 5 acre property where the back half if almost completely full and taken over by the burrs or stickers. Can you scrape the 2.5 acres and then sod when we are able to? We have 3 large dogs so we wanted to avoid chemicals if possible. What is our best solution since it is all stickers and barely any grass so it needs to be all removed??

scraping the top may be your only solution. pre emergents don't necessarily do much for sticker weeds from my experience. however since those type weeds are in your area I would still be dilligent in your use of pre emergents.

I have one small section of Zoysia in my KBG lawn, no idea how it got there. Its been slowly shrinking with each overseed but I may just cut it out this year and have it over with.

I’ve had really good luck with the ole bear claw and rip out spots of what I don’t like as I’m mowing. Years later it hasn’t come back. But spurge as well as creeping Charlie will always been my nemesis.

its all preference. I would stick to turf type tall fescue or zoysia if you're a beginner. if you don't mind work and love the short mow there are several variations of bermuda that are pretty awesome.

Can I hire you to redo my lawn? I will be having an irrigation system installed and probably redoing the lawn myself this year.. not looking forward to it. I just want to fertilize and stripe!

grab a shovel and dig it out and replace the dirt and patch it with seed or sod.

Hey Ginga, i noticed you had Quack/Couch grass in your problem grass section. Most warm season guys don't know what that is. I am in Canada and have a lot in my lawn. Any ideas on how to fight Quackgrass. Tried tenacity and it seemed to weaken it. trying to cut short with reel mower but I read that might stimulate it. Is overseeding and time the best option? Fluazifop-P-butyl is the active ingredient that you're looking for if you're having an issue with quackgrass. the problem you'll face is finding that ingredient where you live. I'm trying to get in contact with some area experts so i can put a list of products together for canadians.

If I recently bought a home in south Florida but the lawn had been neglected for years (it’s all weeds/crabgrass) could I just kill it off and dethatch, aerate, level, fertilize, and then try planting seeds? Or would I need to scrap the layer of weeds off the top?😊

great question and it all depends on the type of grass you have currently and what you'll be planting. if you're tryijng to switch from bermuda to something else I'd consider scraping the top. the process you listed above works great! I've done it a few times and love the process. the major issue is some grass types are more resistant to "kill it all off" products than others.

Great tips! Rather than starting over by scraping and removing all of the sod, could you instead kill the entire lawn with a non-selective herbicide (i.e Roundup), dethatch, aerate, top dress (if necessary) and then re-seed/fertilize? (Specifically with a cool season lawn)

Yes! Cool season that works great. Little tougher with warm season grass types. it was faster to scrape the top and call it a day.

my side yard took a beating over the fall with loaders dropping off decking materials causing giant dips and waves in the lawn. I am planning on killing the side yard with round up and dethatching it to the dirt, laying 6cuyds of top soil, leveling everything and planting new seed in the late summer (Virginia resident). The grass there now is not terrible but mowing the yard over there now is tough because I get scalped areas because of the loader tracks.

Hey Ginja, is your lawn a mono stand ok KBG or do you have a blend? I installed KBG sod 4-5 years ago and I’m planning to add some new cultivars of KBG this upcoming season but was toying with possibly doing a 70/30 blend of KBG/PRG. Any thoughts?

Its mono. The argument over a rye blend is eventually the blue takes over the rye and you're left with a cheetah pattern in some areas where the kbg is weaker. I prefer not to blend with kbg otherwise you'll need to drop it spring and fall with the rye

200 for a skid? In Alabama the price to rent an average size skid for a day starts around 600 with delivery taking it to around 800 to 1000. Most homewners will be paying 1500 min to rent the skid for a project like and that would be for two days with 2500 to 3000 for discounted week rate being what most end up paying. Sometimes a mom and pop rental place will be about a third of the price but they wont rent a small wheeled trencher for under 200 a day

Thanks...for all my knowledge on Zoysia, I didn't realize it was the most shade tolerant of the warm season grasses. I'll be stealing plugs from my established front lawn this year and transplanting the plugs to the back and allow it to take over slowly. I think if I did all the work in my back lawn that I did on my front, (the back is 2x the size of my front), I think my wife would murder me in my sleep.

When moving into my new house. It was 95% weed( crab grass). I tried for 2 months with little luck. So I ended up killing most of the lawn. By October and after 60000 gallon( in 2 months) of water. I was able to final turn it around.

Can you tell me more about this? I have the same problem? Did you overwater to "drown" out the crab grass? Did it ever come back? That's what I'm struggling with.

Is there any place for putting down fertilizer under the new sod? Also a turf starter food getting sold up here is MAP or monoammonium phosphate. I have not heard of anyone using it, is it snake oil?

It's more commonly known in the agricultural spectrum. farmers use it. it'll work great. The bag should explain that its commonly formulated with a full NPK spectrum ie 12.27.8

i have a yard way too big to do this with and honestly its only bad in one area, doesnt seem to want to take seed but grows weeds well. looking at the soil it seems very hard and not much nutrition to it, any suggestions?

I would do a soil test to figure out the PH. it s going to come down to calcium defficiencies but we need to make sure we get you the right kind of calcium.

Another great why and how Ginja video. In 08 I had a grub problem and the plan was to remove the bad sections with a rented manual sod cutter and replace those few sections. Well as I started kicking the manual sod cutter I noticed the problem was bigger than I thought. This 51 year old body at the time was up to the challenge and by the end of the day all 2k sq ft on lawn was torn up and thrown into the near by woods by myself. I then found a 6' chain link section of fence and tied a rope around my waist and dragged it back and forth until the soil was level. My whole body was in pain lol. I ordered 3 1/2 pallets of KBG and the following Saturday laid down the sod once again by myself. It took my body longer to recoup then it took for the sod to take root lol. That was 12 1/2 years ago and still have the same lawn you see today. So I know what you guys went through at Brett's. But then again I am Striperman 🤣🤣🤣

Yes, just make sure it’s even with the existing grass and use a lot of good quality top soil

absolutely you can do it in sections. just be sure to be picky on the type of sod or seed you purchase and get what you want.

I've never dug out, leveled and installed sod, but I've total killed 10,000 sq ft twice, and over seeded twice. I've used aerators, and dethatchers. I will never use another dethatcher. The way I prefer is kill your weeds, like with Tenacity, then aerate, and over seed. Thanks

I’ve been told seeding and aeration isn’t good because the seed falls in the holes and it’s too deep to germinate.

I'm tempted to kill my lawn off and reseed with some eco lawn tall fescue. Little to no water and mow maybe twice a year or so. Water restrictions got me thinking.

I love the average front yard is 1500 sqft and total yard is 3000 sqft. Lmao I have 47k sqft and about to this point of taking a Harley rake and releveling my entire yard install irrigation and relevel the entire thing with a leveling blend. I don't what to know the cost of just that in materials

@@SaintOfTheLord it has an oil based herbicide but it is not a surfactant. The non ionic surfactant is a chemical flattened that helps distribute the herbicide evenly

Average is 3000-4000, while I am sitting here with 15000 in the front and 9000 in the back. Also I am on 1.6 acres which is my county minimum and I have woods.

please help I need to find a TTTF seed that is excellent for high traffic I have a Daniff dog will be 180-220 lbs. and a almost 3 year old daughter and my yard is already destroyed from previous home owners 2 dogs can anyone please give me recommendations I live in minnesota and I have mostly sunny yard with one shaded section could buy 2 different types for each area no problem

well...... depends on what the dogs doing to destroy the lawn. you may need to go to a thicker type grass like tttf to with stand the traffic. you may also need to train the dog to pee on the bushes or somewhere else other than the grass.

Would a tiller work better than a bobcat tear out?

No. The scrape and go was worth it for warm season grass. You can till no problem with cool season grass

I kill it off with two doses of glyphosate 10 days apart then two weeks after the 2nd glyphosate app I scarify the ground 4 times over and drop the seed.

If he would have used glyphosate on the yard you could have cleaned up with a rake. The mighty AUGUSTINE is a pain to remove lol But patience is a virtue 🥴

We called it quiets and sued the company that did our lawn. Judge ruled in your favor and later found out they messed up multiple lawns. 1 year later the owner is in jail now for over $500,000 in damages and the company is out of business.

Yes, but some people's time is worth more than what they could pay to have it done or just aren't physically capable. Keep in mind how many people don't even mow their own grass.

you can always pick a small section to reno.

A cheaper but longer option. Use roundup and kill it all mid summer. Then fall just reseed.

it'll work, all be it a slow option. works great on cool season lawns but lawns with bermuda and st augustine can make for a difficult task.

For the record, peanut butter and dill pickle is the best beach sandwich...hands down. Serious

You know your really serious about your lawn when you ripe up your entire yard and just start over! Honestly sod is the best option though. If you have the time or money, it will save you tons of chemicals and time in the future.

Starting over doesn't cost that much. It just takes a lot of work and time. Just use glyphosphate, then mow really low, then use an electric tiller to scoop up all the dead grass. After that place a thin layer of compost over the area, seed, and cover with peat moss. No need to rent heavy equipment or dumpster. You'll have to start in August and you'll finish in September just in time for reseeding.

You'll have to add compost or top soil anyways so what difference does it make if the original soil is sterilized? If you're reseeding without compost or top soil then you're doing it wrong. That's what I did. I killed it in August and on Labour day weekend I scalped, dethatched and core aerated. I seeded with 80/20 KBG/ryegrass mix. After a few days, we had a major rainstorm and an area of my yard was washed out. I was worried I lost too much seed. The place I bought the seed from was out of stock so I bought more seed elsewhere. Unfortunately the new seed sprouted a bunch of rough stock blue grass. I was out there every day pulling new sprouts. The original seed looks great but the rough stock looks like shit. pisses me off because my lawn looks great and I did it for less than $200 and my neighbour spent 1500 on sod but next year I may have to kill it again but first I'll try tenacity.

What species is at 4:10?

This is what I call “EXTREME OVERKILL!” You don’t need a damn bulldozer unless you want to do major relandscaping. What you need to do is spray grass and weed killer and kill everything. Spray a second time, if necessary. Then come in several weeks later with a sod cutter. No need to order a dumpster. Take that sod, flip it over and put it somewhere where you want to build a raised bed, or fill in a low areas. No need to send it to a landfill. Then bring in new topsoil, level and roll it with a weighted roller, plant seed or lay sod.

@@pestandlawnginja I did it with my Bermuda, and an invasive, light-green, Bermuda-like grass, that was even tougher than Bermuda. I sprayed, waited a week or two, sprayed again waited another week, and then went out to get the sod cutter, because the Troy-built tiller I tried to use, just bounced off of that dead invasive grass, it was so tough. The stuff was bulletproof! The new sod I put down was a different species of Bermuda. It was a lot of work, but luckily it was only 1500 ft.² Good info here on weed control! I’ll have to check out that website.

That is why you don't use sod... if you seed you can just kill the lawn and then remove as much of the dead grass then plant. A little bit of extra time seems more than worth it then spending thousands of extra dollars.
