I heard something the other day from a working out of the home homeschool mama. She made such a great point…find out your child’s teaching style…every child learns differently and until you know how they learn, you simply cannot just pick a curriculum and expect it to magically work. Watching other moms on YT is simply getting an idea of what each curriculum is and it’s our job to tailor your HS based on each child’s specific needs. That’s first and imperative.

Yes, it does make a big difference. It will also help you to adapt curriculums to work better for your child. ☺️

As an American, I love how you say ‘Abeka’ 😝

We tried 100 EL and Abeka and my 4.5 yo was overwhelmed by the busy pages. We tried JADY A’s Elemental Phonics because it is sooo simple and plain. We are almost done with the first book and my baby is so proud of herself. I really recommend it!

This is great. Thank you!!! What do you use for spelling and at what age did you start including spelling + reading?

We’re using Sequential Spelling. I think around age 8 is a good time to start. ☺️

Hi. Was there a time when any of your kids when they were a toddler 4-5 were not interested in Read-a-Louds? I bought Sonlight but I'm afraid he won't be paying attention to them as much as I want to. We started 2 weeks ago and he's really not paying attention. There will be few seconds of listening but I know he's not into it and just forcing himself because I begin to be frustrated. I try to make it fun and looks like a play. I saw your daughter and she was very still and just sitting down quietly regardless if she understands the entire story or not. At least she will get something out of it. But my son is just totally all over the place. Tonight he even was pretending to sleep. Is this just that a phase? Or is it because he's a boy and doesn't sit still?

Every kid is different for sure. ☺️ I would still do some reading each day but perhaps not as much. Build up to it slowly. I would also suggest having something for you son to do with his hands while you read. Playdoh or colouring are both great options!

He’s so young. I’ve studied a lot of HS curricula and learning styles. Children typically just are not ready to formally learn until around six years old. With that said, focus on play based learning and don’t force anything at this age. You don’t want to squash his natural love of learning and exploring ❤

Just curious (not accusatory), when AAR wasnt working for your daughter, is there a reason you went to Abeka instead of going back to TGATB? Thanks!

Thank you for sharing! Have you ever heard of Pride reading program it uses a similar approach as all about reading. I think my 9 year old have some dyslexia tendencies he hasn’t been diagnosed so not quite sure. But so far of what I noticed sometimes he struggles with pronouncing words and mixes up certain lettters. We been doing TGTB and he is doing well with the workbook but when it comes to the booster cards it takes us a while. So I been looking into programs more design for kids that might struggle with reading and more of an approach towards dyslexia.

I haven't heard of that program. It does sound like a program specifically designed for dyslexia would be a good fit.
