Hi Emma, I had a really rough start as a first-time mom with no one to talk to or ask advice from. I felt like I was just guessing every time my newborn cried and it was really hard and the days felt soooo long. Found your videos when my bub was about 3 weeks old and now she only cries during immunizations! Now I understand what every single fuss meant as I started paying attention to her body language, wake windows, feed timing, etc. I am very thankful to you for being the mom I never had. Now my baby is turning 6 months next week and is a very happy baby. I'm also sleeping well now and enjoying being a mom.

I work in NICU. I talk to every single baby. Ask them to do things, inform them they aren’t being very helpful, say sorry when I have to do something negative. I talk to them like I do adult, just changing the pitch and intonation to be more engaging not that they react

I’ve treated my son like a little best friend since birth and just talked to him in my normal voice, talking about what I’m doing for the night, asking if he had any “big plans” etc… just passed his 6 month check in and the pediatrician told my husband and I that our son is the happiest, most giggly, most attentive and clearly trying to communicate baby she’s seen there in years. We were so so happy! My Mom told me she did this with me so I carried it on and I also found it made bonding easier for my husband to start, since a lot of men say “I don’t know how to do a baby voice” - that’s perfectly fine, you don’t need to, they love YOUR voice! We’re so blessed that early exposure to dozens of family members and friends has allowed our son to be very curious with new people and he hasn’t yet met a new person he doesn’t like - EVERYBODY gets a smile from him, I’m so proud of him. I know that can change a bit but that’s okay, he’s such a people person and I love to see that because it reminds me of myself and I always had lots of friends as a little kid and I hope the same is true for him 💛

Sounds like you have been doing an amazing job responding to your little ones cues and naturally including him in conversation. It also sounds like you are loving this time together - it is so nice to see!

I'm a brazilian pediatrician and mom of a 5m old cute boy, and love your videos. Thank you so much for all the information.

Great advice, but in regards to tip #3, I would add that it is very important to differentiate between "budget" baby carriers for baby wearing and high-quality, ergonomically designed baby carriers that allow for a deep seat and actually support the development head/neck/torso strength. There's nothing wrong with using these carriers for long periods of time, and babywearing the majority of the day is in fact a very common cultural practice throughout the world 🙂 You are correct that the Infantino carrier pictured is not recommended; nor is any other carrier that allows the legs to dangle rather than hang in a M-position, and world-facing (outward facing) in any carrier is not recommended for more than 15 minutes at a time.

Awesome video and advices! Your videos really work in magic way! I really appreciate your work! Is it possible to do a video about physical development also?... like development of legs and hands. My son is 3 months old. Mentally I believe he is developing very well, even ahead, but I'm wondering if it's ok that he rase his legs only 45°. I wanted to show him his bright socks with cartoons, but found it difficult to do. Is it normal at this age or not? What can I do to help him to be more flexible?

Amazing that I’ve been doing all of these since my baby was born 4 months ago (tummy time has been a struggle tho) but I’m a mental health therapist so I guess it was just ingrained in me to be so interactive and social with her

Emma...thanks for sharing such important information. My little one is 7 moths old, he cannot stand yet, but he loves to stand. He doesn't like to lie on the ground or do tummy time. He keeps raising his head when I put him on the floor. How to satisfy him? Standing too much will put pressure on his legs and can bend his bones. What are the other alternatives?

My baby is 10 months old now, but when she was younger and I needed a safe place to put her I used a pack'n'play with the bassinet insert. It's flat and there is a lot of room in there so she had plenty of space to stretch and move her head and limbs, and even roll over once she started to do that. She now loves crawling around and is pulling up and climbing on everything she can reach, and running around with her little push walker.

An interesting thing I noticed is that when I train (weightlifting and bodyweight training) and put the little one near she seemed like she’s was trying to make the same mouvement. As an example, if I was doing crunches or leg raises next to her I noticed she tried doing the same and lifted her leg very soon after I did the mouvement, I noticed the same thing with her arms while doing bench presses or arm curls. My personal hypothesis is that mirror neurons tried to imitate what I was doing.

My newborn has reflux so he doesn’t really like to be on the floor a lot. Is there an alternative to this?

Hi Emma. I used with my son Ergobaby omni 360 carier. That alowed me to do stuff. Could you comment more about overuse. My situation was that my son did not sleep well in pram or carseat he wanted to be close to me and nurse often . Once he hit 4 month it was a lifesaver. I could put him in it and eat my food or have a drink while he chilled or had boob. First ling sleep of night or daytime naps where possible only if i put him in carier and moved around. Once he was asleep I put him in bed and he slept well. He started talking early walking before 1 year and is very quick and clever 3,5 with fantastic memory. But one could consider i overused carrier he did get flor and play time and all that jazz, but he was a lot in carrier as he was velcro baby . Is it really so bad to carry your child with you. We cooked together, did laundry, played with sister, worked on computer ..

That's amazing! I would be super excited about her talking skills. My two little ones were early talkers and they definitely talk my ear off. 😂 You might find that because your little one can talk so well the tantrums might not be as intense. I certainly found that with my two.

I find it hard to do tummy time and floor time with my little one as he has reflux so lying down makes milk spill back up. He just wants to be held upright all the time on me..

Hi Emma! My daughter was in the NICU for 6 months and was born 2 months early. She just turned 1 year old and is just now starting to attempt to crawl but she doesn’t like tummy time at all so it’s hard for her. She also doesn’t pull up yet. Is it possible you could do a video on a situation like mine? Or do you have advice? She’s in PT and OT but all of our friend’s babies are already crawling and almost walking.

Hi @Courtney Carpenter it sounds like your little one's start to life was difficult. I can only image how hard it must have been for all of you. I hope the last few months have been a little easier. You said you little one has just turned one, so her corrected age would be 10 months (as she was born 2 months premature). So the milestones you would be aiming for are 10 month old milestones. So it is great that your little one is trying to crawl. It is great that you have been able to get OT and PT for your little one! Given that they know your little one, they would be the best people to ask advice on how to help your little reach the developmental milestones, like crawling and make tummy time easier for your little one. I hope they can help!

hi @dafy senal 5 month olds can stand (put weight through their legs) when they are held around their rib cage. Their legs tend to straighten and then collapse so it appears like they are bouncing. Once a bub's learn this they can really start to enjoy it and only want to stand. This can then become tiring for parents and cause some back pain. It's fine to do it for short bursts but keep giving your little one floor time (either on their back, side or tummy) to give them the opportunity to move freely and strengthen those muscles. hope that makes sense!

Hi Emma, I have a question. My daughter is 5 months old now, she LOVES tummy time and does it usually after every diaper change, she also likes to play with her feet. However; she isn't able to roll over yet. She is able to lift her bum off the ground completely and bring both feet to her mouth while shifting weight to both sides but isn't able to get her shoulders/arms involved with the full roll over. Do you have any suggestions in ways I can assist a roll over independently?

I did an activity with my daughtet where i would push one of her legs towatds the floor gentlly and let her push herself up. Few weeks after shes rolling everywhere. Good luck. Hope this makes sense

Hi @Jasmine Duquette it's so great to hear your little one loves tummy time and enjoys playing with her feet. It sounds like she is getting close to rolling over. The average age babies learn to roll over is anywhere from 4 - 7 months. Some bubs might learn to roll earlier than this and others learn to roll a little bit later. So your little one still has plenty of time to learn this skill. But I do have two videos you might find helpful. Hi @Carolyn Bird so great to hear these videos are helpful! Try not to stress about your little one's development. It doesn't matter that you started tummy time at 1 month of age. What matters is that you try and do some tummy time every wake period (during the day) from now on. Just start small and build up the time your little one does it, as he becomes more comfortable and stronger in this position. Also there are lots of different ways to do tummy time (not just directly on the floor) so you probably did do some tummy time in that first month, you just didn't know it.

My PPD kicked in and well all I did with him in the first few weeks was change him, feed him and then back to bed but I'm changing that and getting the help I need. Hi @Alex T I find that bubs can get bored with toys. To keep your little one interest to play with the toys I would recommend placing some of the toys away and then rotating the toys once a week. You may also find your little one likes to explore non-toy items (like cups, measuring cups, metal bowls and a spoon, containers etc).

My son is 10 months and he screams a lot, he’s very assertive and fiesty. He is active, hyper, and it’s a struggle to change his diaper/clothes. Would this mean he is secure bc he’s confident in his voice and exploring?

Hi @Cyn Cyn if your little one is happy to explore and play then it would suggest he is feeling safe and secure. It is also not uncommon for little ones to start to become assertive and seek their independence at this age. It can certainly make everyday activities like nappy changing difficult!

No one told me I had to play with my newborn I made the mistake of not picking him up much while he was in his bassinet hopefully I didn’t mess him up he’s now 14 mths old still not walking but crawls all over

Is it important or how important is it for babies to play with other babies?

Hi Linda it is important that babies socialise with people but this does not have to a baby. In fact if your little one only socialises with adults that is completely fine. It isn't until 2 years of age that children start to engage in parallel play.

My baby's 6 months now. He makes side movements but never roll over. If we compel,he'll lift his head and crawl. Why isn't he rolling on his own 🥺?

Hi @pournami gd this can seem confusing. But bubs learn these skills at their own pace. In factthe average age bubs learn to roll over is anywhere from 4 - 7 months. . It sounds like he might need time to develop the strength needed to roll over completely. I would recommend whenever you place him on the floor, you place him on his back and then help him to roll over onto his tummy. This will teach him the motor pattern needed to roll and give him an opportunity to participate in rolling over. Why accelerate?

I disagree with the point that wearing a baby in a baby carrier is detrimental to their development. A properly designed, ergonomically correct baby carrier, worn tummy-to-tummy (facing the caregiver), is actually an excellent way to aid in infant development. Baby is 20-30cm away from the caregiver's face (visible and kissable), is able to push off the caregiver's chest with their hands and look around (tummy time, turning head back and forth), promotes secure attachment and bonding (mimics in-arms, lots of opportunity for physical touch, promotes a caregiver who is highly responsive to cues), and provides lots of opportunity to converse back and forth about what baby sees around them.

Hi Melissa I agree! The baby carrier is a great item that parents can use to soothe their little one and bond with them. I actually recommend using a baby carrier during the fussy period in the afternoon. In this video I say that when these items are overused it can lead to developmental delays, because the bub is not given the opportunity to freely move around and against gravity which they do when they are doing floor time activities. I hope that makes it a bit clearer.

@@EmmaHubbard Is there anything for when the baby doesn't like carriers? My 11 week almost 12 week old barely tolerates one for maybe ten or fifteen minutes and oftentimes won't period. I end up getting no exercise because of this as I am a stay at home parent and our area isn't flat so putting her in the stroller for walks is downright dangerous (it could tip over with her in it). We have two different ones: a moby wrap that has the buckles and an ergonomic pricy one that we have to use the infant insert with which makes it hard to get all set up and oftentimes by t hen she is over it. I just want to be able to go out and walk. I have so much weight to lose and being in home every day is claustrophobic and depression fueling.
