It's a must have on a medium to large backhoe... a bit better on a bit larger backhoe. Where he talks about limitations of grappling... my grandpaw's 555e has carried off 10in trees in the grapple... pretty much at max load of the tractor.

I have one on my tractor and use it all the time. It's like trying to replace your big tool box with a leatherman tool. The specialty tools are better, but sometimes you just need to do something quickly. Sure a grapple is better, but I may be on the other side of the property and just need to move a few things instead of going to the barn to get my skid steer. Saves a lot of time. Thanks for the demonstration.

You forgot one of the most useful features and that is to pick up the last of a dirt pile by clam shelling it. How many times have we been moving a large pile and by the time we get to the end we have to grab a regular hand shovel and scoop it into the bucket because all we’re doing is chasing the pile

Well done Mr Neil. Best Messicks video by far about attachments. I think you missed one other function of that bucket. You don’t actually have to normally dump it, say dump dirt into a trailer, just open the jaws, which I think would help with lift height issues.

This is actually a good tool for those who don't have a constant need for any of the actual attachments it covers. At times I could use a grapple, but for the most part would sit collecting dust. I sometimes find a need to use a box blade, but it takes up room and finds it's way behind other, more used, equipment and needs to be pulled out, same with the grader blade. In fact, I am considering selling all the above since I haven't used them in years. I think the most useful part of it is how you can dump and spread materials, especially when the bucket can't curl down without hitting a truck bed. I wouldn't replace a standard HD bucket with it, but would have it as an addition. Should also have mentioned that it requires a 3rd function setup if the tractor doesn't have one.

when digging forward tilt the angle of the bucket not raise/lower the whole bucket - much better control. Also when grappling you come over the top and pull back and curl the back down. You get better as you use it. I love not swapping it. It is standard on the Kubotas here :)

This makes me wish I'd considered such a rig for my B2601! I guess I'd still have gotten the box blade, but maybe not the grapple too. For those with a little of this and that to do, 4 in 1 makes sense. Also for those of us with limited storage space.

Neil I’ve have had a 4 in one bucket for on my skid loader for 19 years. You can do so many things with it clam the bucket full. Extended reach across a trench and back fill .open slightly and grade . Pick up rocks. Shear off small trees. With a skid steer you do what is necessary to stop the bucking. Caused by a short wheelbase.keep in mind they are heavy.

  • @SeanLarkan

Also handy for 1: grabbing & lifting out old standing fence posts and 2: to hold a log in the air while you chainsaw sections off it. As others have said they’re very popular here in Aus. The ones we get as standard here don’t seem to be made from such heavy material. Very versatile and with practice become like a very powerful set of mechanical hands. They go well with a box scraper or grader scraper on the back. Not much you can’t do. Beware though working with a 4 in 1 with the jaws open means quite a lot of pressure on the hinges and hydraulics.

4in1s can pick up a large amount of brushy stuff with good technique. Open the bucket and reach over your brush, lower the loader close to the ground and back up. Think of it like rolling a carpet up and clamping down on it when done. A youtube search of international drott will bring up two old videos of 4in1 bucket uses albeit on an international track loader but quite informative. Thanks Neil, your videos are why i bought my L3901 over the competion.

From Australia - I have a 4 in 1 on my BX23s because the skid steer and grapple was not an option here. I use it constantly to pick up small to medium logs and push dirt and brush around, I absolutely would be lost without it however it is heavier and not as deep as standard bucket and so lift and capacity is reduced. Two questions for Neil - 1. As you know, I bought new an '05 Tc33DA with a 14LA loader. With that, my dealer (no longer in business) matched a Land Pride 3 point, 72 inch, Rotary Mower. I have been told by several people that the 72 inch mower was To Big for the 33 HP tractor. What do you think? 2. I am thinking of replacing the original 15 year old bucket which I think is a 60 incher with a 4 in 1 (even before this video). Does anyone make 4 in 1s less that 72 inch? Can 33 HP driving a LA14 handle a 4 in 1? Would it be essential , wise, or foolish to replace the 15 year old original Hydraulic Pump? Is there an option to upgrade the original pump with a unit with greater GPM? SDH the Great Unknown in CT

  • @MessicksEquip

I'd not mess with the hydraulic pump unless its broken. Not trivial work. A light duty 72" should be fine, a heavy one will need some front ballast on the tractor. Its all in how you have your machine setup. There are several vendors of 4-N-1's. Land Pride makes some good ones for smaller tractors.

Not a fan of that tractor. The hsd transmission and autothrottle combo are not ideal. I would rather have a standard/syncro/ hyd shuttle etc that you can gear a bit higher, and have less rpm

Should be called a 4-n-1/4 because it doesn't do anything remotely well. The type of setup that I might buy at auction for a grand but wouldn't pay $4k.
