the gear cutting was excellent! at some point i need to fix the gears in my lathe, it flooded before i owned it and the person didn't drain the water from the gearbox and the bottom of the gears have been sucked away with rust :(

I showed a lot of young ones how to be real Tool and Die makers. The first thing I would tell them is to forget what they learned in school. It doesn't apply out in the real world.

@@GrahamBrown-jk3rc It gets the kids a start sort of. I had the same problems 4 decades ago. I thought l was a Tool and Die maker right out of highschool. It didn't take long at all to find out l didn't know much. I learned from the old guys on how to really do it. The problem we are having now is to get people to work. They definitely don't understand emergency over time. They seem to think they should get a trophy when they get a job done. We got lucky and got a few good ones but we got rid of a lot of bad ones. It just isn't like what it was. When I find a kid that takes pride in his work and gets pissed when he makes a mistake there is hope.

There's a reason why they're not taught in school. That's not a true helical gear as the profile will be inconsistant across the tooth. Specialised brake disc lathes also exist, as do dedicated toolpost grinders that are more rigid and run at a higher speed.

Yes indeed. The cut is deeper in the middle of the teeth compared to the sides. The wider the gear and the bigger the angle, the bigger the error...
