LEVEL 1: Here are the harmonica tabs in C for Amazing Grace in 1st position, upper octave.
6 7 7 8 7 8 -8 7 -6 6
6 7 7 8 7 8 -8 9 9
8 9 9 8 7 8 -8 7 -6 6
6 7 7 8 7 8 -8 7
If you know how to bend, the -6 is a good note to add some soulful expressiveness with a bend. If you don’t know how to bend, you can try saying “oy” or “waoo” on the -6 and see what happens.🤷🏻
Also holes 8 and 9 are great places to do little blow bends on the harmonica. You can try saying “tyuh” or “kyuh.
LEVEL 2: Here are the harmonica tabs for Amazing Grace in 12th position, on a C harmonica playing in the key of F:
4 -5 -5 -6 -5 -6 6 -5 -4 4
4 -5 -5 -6 -5 -6 6 7 7
-6 7 7 -6 -5 -6 6 -5 -4 4
4 -5 -5 -6 -5 -6 6 -5
LEVEL 3: A Bit Tricky - 1st Position Lower Octave
For Level 3 we have to do one bend, and it’s the -3” whole step bend and that’s why this one is a bit tricky. 🤔
But it’s just a passing note in the melody, so if we don’t get it quite right, it’s not the end of the world. And, other than that, this is a really easy place to play Amazing Grace on the harmonica because it’s nice and low in the register.
So even if you don’t know how to bend yet, I recommend giving it a shot! 🙌
Here are the harmonica tabs in C for Amazing Grace in 1st Position in the Lower Octave:
3 4 4 5 4 5 -4 4 -3” 3
3 4 4 5 4 5 -4 6 6
5 6 6 5 4 5 -4 4 -3” 3
3 4 4 5 4 5 -4 4
LEVEL 4: Here are the Amazing Grace harmonica tabs in 2nd position (key of G on a C harmonica:)
-1 -2 -2 -3 -2 -3 -3” 34 23 -12
-1 -2 -2 -3 -2 -3 -3” -4 -4
(*This is a good place to add a bluesy riff)
-3’ -3 -4 -4 5 -4 -3’ -3 -3” 34 23 -12
-1 -2 -2 -3 -2 -3 -3” 34 -23 -3” -12
*The moment after the 2nd line of tabs presents a good opportunity to flex a little bit 💪🏼 and add in some soulful bluesy improvisation.😎
Here are some options to consider in order to get your creative juices flowing:
OPTION #1
Nothing thrills a crowd as much as the -45 trill (aka “warble” or “shake” - alternating quickly between -4 and -5.)
OPTION #2
Wanna flex a little bit more? After the -45 trill, you could come right down down the blues scale in 2nd position, ending on the -1 like this:
6 -5 -4 -4’ 4 -3’ 3 -2” -1 -1’ -1
OPTION #3
If you wanna get even fancier, you could go into a 3rd position blues scale lick. Here’s the first 5 notes of the 3rd position blues scale:
-4 -5 6 -6’ -6
If you’ve checked out my Blues for Beginners lesson, I talk about a couple of licks that I use all the time which I’ve labeled the “Question” phrase❓and the “Answer” phrase ✅
In that lesson, we explored those phrases in 2nd position, but we can also transpose those licks into 3rd position. Here’s 3rd position harmonica tabs for he “Question”:
❓ -4 -5 6 -6’ -6
And here’s 3rd position harmonica tabs for the “Answer”:
✅ -6 -6’ -5 -4
So beginning by putting those two phrases together, we can heighten the sense of climax with some 3rd position blues harmonica vocabulary like this:
-4 -5 6 -6’ -6 -6’ -5 -4 6 -5 -4 -5 -4
And from there switch back into some 2nd position blues harmonica vocabulary like this:
-4’-3’ 4 3 -3’ 4 -4’ -4 -4’ -3’ -2 4 -3’ 3 -2” -1 -1’ -1

@ambroseboscozeal4christ218 yes thank you for asking ,at the graveside burial . Rushed a bit but mostly happy with how it turned out. A fitting tribute to my Grandpa Nate a lifelong harmonica player. l all of a sudden truly regret not learning sooner and playing with him before he passed. I have played every day since.
Amazing Grace... Old Man River.... Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.... All songs with their bloody roots in the deep music history... It all gives goose bumps when emotions from the roots can be brought to the music in 2023....

Great lesson! I have played it in all 4 positions, but normally do the 2nd, with 3rd licks thrown in. I played this song at both of my parents funerals, the lesson had me a bit misty eyed. Thanks Luke! ❤

Thanks for this great video. It's funny that after watching at least 10 other videos about Harmonica positions,, it was the amazing grace vid that finally made me understand that 2nd position means playing at one note higher than the harmonica's natural key.

Glad you enjoyed it! Close! 2nd position is actually playing up 5 letter names from harmonica: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iGaV0c2JaKrYmaw.html 3rd position is up one letter name from harmonica's natural key. Rock on! 😎

Your amazing Luke! Been dabbling with the harmonica for a while now. It’s hard when your trying to learn by yourself and no one to tell ya if your doing things wrong or right. I think I’m bending notes right I guess etc. it’s easy to lose motivation when your can’t really play anything. I need to get on the ball and get into your videos full speed. All paths seem to lead to success. Thank you. Are you using your tongue for blocking notes when you create single notes? What are the advantages, disadvantages, and times when it's most important to use your tongue for blocking?
@Harmonicacom
2 ай бұрын
I'm using lip blocking as shown here kzread.info/dash/bejne/qGihpq-DqtbUn7g.html Tongue blocking is great, most importantly for blues and for adding chordal sounds to melodies like here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/p62Y0MuqdMmnlpc.htmlsi=Jz8dYe_tesIa31On
The key of F is my favorite for this particular song.

Cool. Yeah, I love 12th position for major songs with a little bit of a bluesy or should feel to it.
Luke, it's really amazing, espeicially when blusifying from various position . BTW, I am so curious how to bending 7 hole as "Tyuh"? It seems part of B5 sounds and so quickly go to C6. The blow is nearly impossible bending. Am I wrong with that?
That is class I wish I could do that 👍

Amazing Grace Updating....
I swear to god playing single notes is still harder for me than bending. It's my mouth placement I know that, hopefully soon I will find a badass harmonica play so I don't develop to many bad habits.

I don't think you should be swearing to God at an amazing grace video 😂 But, what the hell do I care? 😅
It would have been nice if your little icon arrow flipped upside down on the draw notes and then again on the blow notes that way I wouldn't have to remember which was draw and which was blow lol.
Yes 12th position is easier than the first version. I learned it in 2nd position first 😂 I went backwards. Can you tell me if there’s a tasteful way to modulate from C to F to G (1st position, 12th position then 2nd position)?
@Harmonicacom

No that's my friend LT playing, and then I added in a bass afterwards.
This is great,but on some of the notes there is like a quiver sound how do you do that,is that a breathing technique
@Harmonicacom

That's "the coughing technique" back of the throat like if you pretended to shoot a machine gun or imitate a sheep when you were a kid.
The mostly draw version much harder as not good on the draws yet!

Just takes a lot of practice! This tool might help give you visual reference of how deep you're bending it: www.harmonica.com/bending-tool/
So how do you know where to start for each position IF you’d like to dive more in depth on them?? Are the positions basically like learning all the modes or no? I have a limited knowledge of musical theory from study of pedal steel so I’m not completely ignorant of everything. 😂
@Harmonicacom
Ай бұрын
There is a relationship between positions and modes, which I talk about here: forum.harmonica.com/t/modes-and-positions/8127?u=luke But since I posted that, I learned that positions really just refer to ROOT NOTE. Because utilizing bends you can play in different tonalities. For example, 2nd position is "naturally" mixolydian. But using bends, you can also play Dorian in 2nd position. Just one of many examples. So position just designates where your root note is.

Right on. Glad you're off to a great start!!!
do you teach the Chromatic Harmonica as well? I t sounds much better for all these types of songs, more powerful, more clean... I love to learn the Chromatic harmonica after having listened to hundreds of videos by now.. both are interesting but the Chromatic got so much more potential that if I must start somewhere it feels as if it makes more sense to learn to play Chromatic first and in the future add diatonic as a thing for blues... but both are lovely for sure! just wonder if you can teach the chromatic as well? thanks!

Don't you worry, this is normal problem that most beginners experience! 👌🏼 These are the tips for a getting good -2: 1.) Let gravity lower your jaw so that it's totally relaxed and in a nice "aw" vowel shape, your teeth should be far apart from each other 2.) Keep the back of your tongue down, like it is when you yawn. Make sure it's not in the "Kk" zone (how your tongue is when you say a "Kk" consonant.) 3.) Nice steady, GENTLE, airflow. Most beginners (and many intermediate and advanced players) use WAY to much pressure. Hope that helps! 😎
Key of F is way more difficult. My draws sound horrific.
