You can activate Inktense pencils using 4ish methods, which I outline here. Now, any of these will do, as long as you consider your art goals, and the media you're working on.

Just a quick FYI since I've had some comments about it. I am saying "pilling" not to be confused with "peeling." I have problems with words that start with P and have since I was a kid. Since it has bothered a few I'll definitely try harder to work on enunciation better but I didn't want to confuse anyone. I sincerely apologize if you think I am saying "peeling."

No worries! We all have words that come out the wrong way. Think about teachers, when they make a word mistake, their students are always the witness….but with KZread we have it recorded, but you have put yourself out there, and have great information. Thanks for the clarification, anything else is just getting toward the negative side of the issue and I need to finish your tutorial. Been sick this last week and I fall asleep at the weirdest times….must finish to start coloring.

I'm excited for you to use your inktense pencils more! I absolutely love mine, but paper makes a huge difference in the way they will blend out. If using on non watercolor paper, you right the least amount of water is the best option and if using a brush a nice soft brush is better then a stiff one as it won't pill the paper as easily.

Yes. Sadly, in coloring books we're stuck with certain paper lol. That paper I was using was the closest to coloring book ones for demo purposes. Otherwise, I have some great mixed media paper I'd rather use haha.

Perfect episode for my Inktense journey. I absolutely the medium, but have yet to learn a lot. I've only used the first 2 methods. Being able to maintain pigment intensity is really important to me. The alcohol marker blender looks like a great way to do that. Having choices always helps. @@ColorfullyOptimistic soooo my hubby surprised me this weekend and took me away for my birthday 🎂. No internet, no people for 500 acres for 4 days. He said pack your hobby stuff and let’s go. We had a blast and I was able to play with my pencils and books and getting to practice was a ton of fun. Prismacolor still scare me so I started with a set of Cra-Z-Art Timeless Creations. They were nice and better then Crayolas by a long shot. Glad I started with them because 3 mins into coloring I tipped them all over and they went everywhere 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️. Not one was broken and so far sharpened them all and still good but had it been the others I would have cried. We are back with internet and I’m buying the Dahle 133 sharpener and a pencil case to hold all 150 of the pencils. Boy, this is one expensive hobbies lol. I down loaded a couple of your videos on coloring hair and they were super helpful. Not anywhere close to you but It was not to bad. Thanks again and hope your doing well.

I've never had bleed through, but there's been pilling with some brands of books. Yes, water control is critical, and that's the one thing that keeps people from using Inktense, which is why I show two non-water alternatives.

I've seen a few people with a little bleed through but that was with big waterbrushes... I dont use the other method.. just because it's my personal preference but for anyone too worried about water it's an awesome way to start. Sorry all my notifications are crazy this last month on KZread they seem to show up weeks late or within 5 minutes. You were so right on the flowerscape paper with prismas.. I am in buttery heaven 😁

Can anyone explain how a colorless blender activates the pigment? I like to use the Caran d’Ache blender pencil and it’s completely dry…but the pigment still activates as if I’ve added water. I prefer this method because it preserves so much depth and texture of the layers rather than smoothing it all out. I can also be very super specific and precise as to where I want to activate.

The alcohol marker is liquid or a form of liquid, which activates the pigment. Yes, you can use these and blend them dry, but really, you want to activate them to see their full potential -- just one girls opinion of course.

@@ColorfullyOptimistic but I am using the blender pencil not the marker. One day out of curiosity I decided to try a Prismacolor blender pencil over it and the pigment began changing colors and intensifying just as if I added water. It made no sense to me but it works with every brand of blender pencil I’ve tried.

Yes, you can actually. You can even color on fabric. Just remember, it is permanent.

I mentioned in the video I'm using paper close to what is the cardstock in coloring books, since most of my audience does adult coloring, I wanted them to see how it reacts on the paper they encounter the most.

@@ColorfullyOptimistic I can colour in & draw a little but add a brush & it all turns to mess. As Inktense pencils require you to activate the colour with water & a brush thats why I was asking

You would have better results, no pilling, if you used 140# 100% cotton watercolor paper. This paper, if you are using the Neenah 110# card stock listed in the description, isn’t made for watercolor.

Yes, I'm aware. You might have missed where I said I was purposely using cardstock in adult coloring books (as my channel does a lot of adult coloring). So, my goal was to help colorists learn how to activate without damaging coloring book pages.

Yes. I also say the word "pants" weird, but mean "pants" despite how it sounds. I have always had enunciation issues with words that start with the letter P since I was a kid.
