Monsters & Memories started as a discussion between MMO fans during a series of livestreams, about what it would be like to create a niche, smaller budget / indie game, in the style of a Classic Fantasy MMORPG, but utilizing modern day tools and game development practices.

    Over the past week I have listened to the old interviews between Shawn and the old EQ team members and looked up everything I can for M&M. Can honestly say that I'm a full believer in this project. So stoked that there's a team of people that really seem to grasp what made EQ so great.

    it doesn't matter if the eq dungeons were meant to be camped or not. if that's enjoyable and works as good game design then it's fun and legitimate. people always want to cite what the dev intended as if that must be the superior design.

    Please give gnomes an elitist culture. Have their NPCs refer to non gnomes as "insofisticates" and "barbarians". I hope that mage pets will get some utility, IE fire pets shedding light that grows with power, air pets capable of being used as a jumping springboard, earth pets being able to mine for a player with the trade skill, water pets being able to dowse a burning effect if you run into them... would be cool if you had specialist mages capable of augmenting pets with their specialty. A fire specialty mages earth pet could be a magma elemental, they could be barred from water, air could be a sirroco elemental, water specialist could make mud elementals, and misty elementals, etc.

    re: not wanting to push players towards roaming vs. camping- I loved how Embers Adrift did this, by having multiple PHs in different areas of the dungeon. So if you sat in one area, inevitably all the PHs would respawn in other parts of the dungeon and named would no longer pop. So either your group had to roam to kill all the various PHs or have another group killing them. Even with 2+ groups, it was often better to have each group roam to kill PHs so none were missed.

    Agreed. While I didn't hate "Ever-camp", I very much enjoyed dungeon crawling far more in EverQuest. Once you broke a camp in 2 minutes, it was easy mode for a mindless hour. Just not as fun as moving through a dangerous dungeon

    Love the vision and game design. There is a trend in multiplayer games now to "min/max" and find a group make up to "cleave" down all the monsters making content trivial. Does your team have awareness of this behavior and are you doing anything to ensure a variety of group make ups using the intended classes rather than say for example a group of all 1 type of dps class and 1 healer? I could think of a few ways to combat this by having abilities by each class type that is required to be used to survive encounters or without the abilities make the encounters extremely inefficient. For instances, maybe the encounter dies very very slowly to pure dps unless an ability reduces the armor, or the monster does extreme amounts of damage without being slowed, the monsters cannot be killed by aoe (dps extremely with all monsters awake), magic debuffs required or damage shield will kill the entire group. etc etc etc

    re: EQ motivations- Having played EQ shortly after release till the moon expansion, as well as a few years of P99, the only thing that explains EQ development is the devs having the mindset that they were developing a pen n' paper game for groups of existing friends. Obviously they knew they weren't but if that was their lived experience, that is the model that they would unconsciously have in their heads as they designed things. This explains classes and races that were intended to be better than others, with an xp penalty to make up for it (ogre, troll, hybrids). It explains dungeon layout, and respawn time, which seem to assume one group would be in the low level area, level up, then move to the next higher lvl area. It explains why some classes weren't balanced for groups, with no effort to rebalance them even (especially?) in major expansions. It's just friends playing, who cares if 3/6 of the group are playing druids, it's all cool. Pretty much every aspect of EQ that now makes you go, "WTF were they thinking?!" can be explained by their unconscious assumption that only 1 group of friends would be playing it at a time.

    Sadly unfollowed the big streamer after hearing it while watching their stream. I was actually pretty surprised they had such a strong opinion, considering the game they support has done their best to emulate what a worse everquest looks like.

    15:00 that would be cool if you had to light the torches yourself in the dungeon. You could have them go out randomly or at a set amount of time.
