Hey great video! Just to clarify, once the torsion spring is relieved with 30ish 1/4 turns, will there be no tension or extreme danger after that? I just need to remove an 8x7’ in a building I’m taking down

Whish I'd known this 20 years ago! I would have replaced my own garage door! The moron who did it left the old tracks, and torsion springs for my WOODEN (Several hundred pounds) door intact (mostly), but bent all to kingdom come. Bet he didn't know any of the stuff you talked about, and probably hurt himself in the process. Why else would the steel tracks be cut short, and bent up a few feet from the opening for the door, and ONE of the 2 springs all unwound and looking a mess, while the other was still wound? (Frankly, I've come to realize that that wooden garage door was the best part of the house. Better than the 3 wire telephone wire [a standard for about 10 seconds in the 40's], but worse than 2 wire after that. And Better than the REDWOOD beams used in the rooves of the house and garage. [That part of the rooves felt like it was about to break when you walked on the roof.] And better than the 2 wire electrical system of the house and garage.) With a new, aluminum (practically illumination foil) and track installed right next to the parts of the old one he left attached to the garage. I've never seen a worker install a new appliance or device AROUND the old one. Had to get the owner of Overhead Doors to come in and fix new door himself, as it literally started to fall apart just a few weeks later. Had to mention AMX to get the owner to stop avoiding me. But he called me in 15 minutes after a month of avoiding me, when I asked his secretary if they took AMX. Thant's some clout AMX has, as I neither paid with it, or called them about it.

I took garbage out to the garage one night, to put in garbage can. I opened the top of the can to put the bag in and one of the tension springs on my garage door broke!!! Unbelievable loud sound, in the dark, right above my head. I said a silent prayer, "God, I don't know what this is, but it has me - guess i'll see you in a few."

I'm 53 and just dismantled a 17 x 8 door by myself for the first time in under 3 hours. I watched a few youtube videos, bought the right tools (mainly spring bars and square socket) and went to town. I was methodical and only removed what parts were absolutely necessary, starting with loosening the springs of course. My wife helped me finish up for the last hour. I also consider moving the ladder around a lot and going up and down it many times to be 100% more dangerous than tensioning/detensioning the springs. For years I've heard how it's so dangerous but I had both springs unwound in 15 minutes and didn't think it was any big deal. It just takes a proper checklist and paying attention.

Thank you for the videos! I didn't wake up planning to become a garage door repair expert, but your videos gave me the confidence to give it a go. You kept it simple enough this novice could safely get the cable & rollers back on the door when they came flying off after a mishap (What a way to end 2021!). While I am still a far cry from an expert, I am proud to say I can now use the garage door again AND as an added bonus, I still have all my fingers and toes!

Thank you much for this info. I worked for a general contractor for a time and have experience in finish carpentry, tile and stone, and drywall but had never worked with overhead doors, and frankly was petrified of attempting any work on the torsion spring / counterbalance. Well, now because I'm renovating a pre-1978 home, no installer wants to do a replacement for me. With your advice, I'm confident I can do it safely.

Awesome info. My wife didn't wait for the door to completely raise before backing the car out, catching the top of the tail gate to the bottom panel on the door and bent it in the middle about 1 inch out. So, I have to get that bottom panel off and try to straighten it out. This gives me a lot of info, thanks!

I'm a 69 year old mechanic and helped build homes I designed with my family since age 10. Daddy's girl here. I am so happy you stressed the safety issues of doing this job. Safety is the most important I think with any type job you are doing. Being seriously injured can happen in a second if you don't have the whole job planned in steps. Keep up the good work passing your excellent experience along to others. One thing I would like for you to do is wear Safety glasses for sure. Gloves would be a plus too but I'm not good working in gloves either. Didn't get to make that choice when working on equipment in a chemical plant. Lol 😆 you have a great time doing what you love ❤️

Hey Parts4GarageDoors Guy! One of my garage doors, bottom section is a disaster, so I am reviewing YT for ideas, and I found your channel. My system is not a torsion bar setup, rather a coil spring on each side. I watched your video and you made me aware of the torsion bar system so thank you. But, when you did the Bloopers and Outtakes, that was great, I loved it! Thumbs-up and subbed was a no brainer. Have a great day!

I'm one of those DIY'rs that took the bottom plate off without securing the torsion rod. I'd be wearing an eye patch today if I'd been leaning forward 2 inches farther. The plate literally sliced the bill of my ball cap and gave me a concussion. I should've known there are garage door tutorials on youtube. At least I feel better about being smart enough not to use a fountain pen to wind the springs, lol.

Took 8 hrs for my chin to stop bleeding when I got hit by a winding bar. Back when I was a rookie. Know of guys who have lost the use of their hand after 1 mistake. If your going to do this yourself all we ask is please be careful. Good job my friend.

Vise Grips should be on either side of the end plate so when winding the torsion spring or springs don’t cause the torsion tube to make the winding bars pop out and hurt or kill someone ! Never put hands on the Red Set Screws when under pressure like you Did ! Should paint the torsion spring with a paint line so you can count the turns . Some MFG put dots white lines on them to help count the turns but not as good to see . I have been the Overhead Door Field for over 40 years and a oner for over that . Doing Commercial and Residential Installs also Emergency Service Calls .

Thank You! Watched just in time! I was going to loosen the set screws on the cables! Again thank you! My problem is I put on a new bottom seal and I have gaps about 18' in from both ends. I adjusted the limit but it bottoms out in the middle. Perhaps I need a larger seal? The new one is 2 3/4". Threw the old one away before I could measure it. (I didn't have gaps before other than where the old was torn) So get a wider seal or is there a way to take tension off of cable to lower it if that will even work? Thanks!

I can tell that you are experienced when turning the spring because you never let go of the first winding bar when you inserted the second bar. I see a lot of videos where people let go of the first while inserting the second. If something slips the first bar can go flying.

awesome information, thank you. Question, I have an old 10' x 10' old wooden garage door and I need to change the bottom 2x4 wood of my garage because its rotten. I have a 2 roller drum system on both sides with the tension spring in the middle of my garage door directly on top. The 2 brackets at the bottom of the garage door that I need to remove are obviously attached to the 2 pulleys. How do I release the tension off those cables so I can release the brackets without the cables letting go and unwinding? thanks in advance my friend.

That video came out just after my scar between my eyebrows. The only thing I wanted to do was replace the rubber at the bottom. I thought to myself it would be easier if I remove the 2 bottom rollers and open the door, that way the panel hangs down and it's easy to feed the rubber. Because the way the foundation knee wall goes over the side of the door, I didn't see the wire attached to it and just like you said in the video, after removing the last screw of the bottom roller plate, it flew up. Luckily it didn't damage the ceiling, my forehead stopped it. My glasses flew away. Lucky I didn't lose an eye. Your video would have helped me a lot. I had to deal with winding the spring again because all the tension was lost when the cable few up. I did watch a few vidows on that, I forget from who, but they did show the same safety precautions as you, like using a vise-grip to hold it, and more imnoprtantly use 2 proper bars to wind it. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any in short notice, So I made 2 out of 5/8" rebar, and machined the ends down to 1/2" so that the fix and sit all the way in the holes on the spring bracket.

Thanks for the tips. I repaired my garage doors maybe 3 times in 15 years. So I always forget the process and this video reminded me of the safe process and procedures. Last year, my new neighbor at the time had his Spring snap in half. He asked me to help weld it back together. I tried to tell him that it was really dangerous and should be replaced.. I'm not even a professional welder, but I'm sure that they wouldn't do it either. He was hard headed and did it anyway. It lasted 2 days and snapped dropping the door close to his feet. SMH. Anyway awesome video.

Best display of parts and explanation of garage door repair and function that I have seen. I have watched a lot. My renter smashed her car into the bottom 2 panels, twice. I've been considering removing and pounding out dents and one support bracket. My door was made by Gadco and they are no longer in business. If replacing , I'd have to replace them all with a different manufacturer. Cost over $1400. For new complete it would be over $2.100.

is there anything special about the torsion bar/shaft? or can I get black steel pipe from home depot and replace it with that? I'm trying to fix up the previous owners mess up's(multiple things) and notice after carefully unwinding the coils that the bar is really beat up(looks like someone previously adjusted the coils 155~ times at least:S almost square on one part), considering replacing it but not sure....

Please use only a torsion tube made for a garage door! It will save you head aches down the road.

You definitely need to take the tension off of the springs. Also need to measure from the top of the door to the center of the shaft, to make sure you get it back to the same height

That means your cables aren't adjusted equal. One side is tighter than the other, which causes one side to lift higher than the other.

Your minimum requirement is gonna be a pair of 262x2x35 at 10,000 cycles. If you want to upcycle, a pair of 273x2x42 will do about 18,000 cycles.

Hollow tube? What other types are there? There is some useful info on grudge doors, but when can we see how to deal with garage doors? Apart from that, awesome dude.

Do you have a set of tension/winding bars? Those are a must have, along with a good pair of vice grips. Using your tension bars, remove some of the tension on the spring until you see some slack in the cable on the side where the cable is still attached. You will need to leave your bar in the hole. There will still be tension on the bar, and that tension will hold the bar against the garage door. Move your ladder and put the loose cable back on the spool, then go back to your winding bars and SLOWLY (one hole at a time) allow the tension back into the spring. Make sure the cable is spooled on both sides.

I was told my garage door isn’t made anymore. It doesn’t go up on its own but when lifted manually it does stay up. It seems like it still gets power to the motor but won’t go up on its own. Was quoted 1500 for a garage door. What should I do?

The wound up springs are helping balance the weight of the door in order to open it, with or without the opener motor. Most size doors and opener motors can be purchased at Lowes or Home Depot. Although, it sounds to me like the gears may be bad in your opener motor. Its a DIY thing if you're capable. I got an off-duty garage door guy to replace an entire opener motor once cause I didn't want to mess with the chain adjustment. Its kinda precise since the opener motor has an auto reverse in case the door hits an obstruction. The whole job was fairly cheap after I purchased opener motor, which was about $100.
