Do you recommend buying a freeze dryer? Do you freeze dry your own foods?

I do not, but if you intend to buy a lot of freeze dried food it could be worth it. They're just expensive, but over time they can be worth it.

My 2¢ on freeze driers is: it depends. If you have an abundant garden that you end up giving away a lot of the produce to keep it from just going bad, a freeze drier might be a good option. What other food preservation methods can you use instead? What other foods would you be freeze drying? Another major question is what sort of disposable income do you have (this is rhetorical)? If you are just making it with maybe a spare $100 a month, a freeze drier will cost you 30 to 40 months worth of disposable income. If you have $1000 a month disposable income, it "only" costs you 3 or 4 months of disposable income. What else would you spend that disposable income on? What are your priorities? These are questions only you can answer. Can you use your freeze drier to make money? Look into the cottage industry laws for your location (in the US, that will generally be the state level ... but I'm not a lawyer and don't know your jurisdiction). In my location, if I have a house without a pet, I can use my own kitchen for cottage industry foods that do not require refrigeration. If I didn't have a dog, I could do freeze dried candy when my freeze drier isn't working on preserving things from my garden. It's not as simple as freeze dry it and they will come. There's a very good KZread channel dedicated to the business side of a freeze dried business. I would look him up and follow that for a while before taking the plunge. Freeze driers cost more than just the sticker price amount. Realistically, you also need to have freezer space to pre-freeze. You need a sufficient amount of freezer drier trays (two sets minimum -- one for what's currently in the freeze drier and one for what is "on deck" in the freezer). Parchment paper or silicon mats for the trays ...
