4 Exercises for Radial Nerve Pain

Today’s video covers four exercises that can help reduce radial nerve pain, which can be felt on the back of the arm, top of the forearm and the backside of the hand. The radial nerve is one of the three major peripheral nerves of the upper extremity and supplies the posterior (backside) aspects of the arm, forearm and hand.
More specifically, the radial nerve provides motor innervation to the triceps and the wrist/finger extensor muscles. The nerve also relays sensory input from most of the back of the hand and fingers (except the pinky and medial half of the ring finger).
Let me know if you have any questions and, as always, see your local musculoskeletal provider if your symptoms are worsening or not improving.

This pain is no joke. whenever it happens it makes my arms basically crippled. My arms start shivering and i experience muscle weakness and extreme pain to a point that even moving my arms is a torture . It always happens when i train jiu jitsu or wrestling so it stops me from training and doing basic activities for the next 2 days

After a long couple of weeks with worsening nerve pain from a flaring prior injury, I was honestly panicked a little at the idea of stretching my wrist extensor muscle, I was sure it was going to hurt. It was a little uncomfortable at first, but by the end of the 30 second stretch, that actually felt so good. What a helpful video, thanks so much for posting this!

Been to numerous drs, told to do PT for tennis elbow, had cortisone shots, MRIs done and drs ruled out all diagnosable elbow injuries. I was told there's no test for diagnosing some with Radial tunnel syndrome, just ruling out all of the other possible injuries first. I've had a kink in my neck and crippling nerve pain from both elbows down to the tops of hands for 3 years now. Acupuncture has been the only thing that has help me but I will definitely start doing these exercises. I want to fix my problem so I can workout and lift weights again. I feel optimistic after watching this video, so thank you!

hmm, I would think ice only after exercise (immediately). Warmth before, and during should be ok. Also, I would think that nerves don't like ice, but if some inflammation is compressing the nerve then it should help a little with the swelling but again you don't want muscles and ligaments cold during motion.

hmm, sounds like most likely the neck issue. See a neck-ortho or neurosurgeon. Do not get neck popped, cracked, manipulated. The exercise he showed with OK sign, is nerve glide type involving the neck. A good Phd PT can show you more of those and relief or trigger pain will provide good cheap clues.

@@RehabScience thanks. I got your book in the mail today. I'm glad I ordered it because I now understand the three phases and I would be doing these out of step. I'm going to concentrate on the first two neck routines and do phase 1 for a good 3 weeks before I move on. It's hard for me to gauge pain because I'm so used to living in chronic pain that it's just easier for me to go buy a very liberal timeline. I have several issues that I need to address but I might be going under the knife for hernia surgery. I either have a hernia, or two, or I have nerve damage. I won't know until a couple weeks from now. Therefore, I need to stay away from any resistance training at the moment. I'm a weightlifter so I'm not too incredibly worried about needing to gain strength Right now because the exercises you show are ones that I have done regularly. But eventually I will need to get back on them. The book is great, by the way.
