I am trying to reduce waste at my house and I am sure you are too! These 4 ideas are here to help. As sewers, we have an advantage being able to make things that are useful and beautiful! These projects are also eco friendly and reduce household waste. YAY!
In this video, I mention sharing links to videos, recipes, template, and more :) . I put all that information together in a blog post for you! Visit gingercake.org/gingercake/201...
Requests granted! Some of you wanted those links here. I understand!
Here is the link to my book (this is an affiliate link so I get a % when you purchase) shrsl.com/1ygsc
Here is the link to the popcorn flavor recipes~ neighborfoodblog.com/2018/02/...
Here is the link to the make up remover/ face wash recipe~ colleenhobson.com/diy-coconut...
I use 1/2 a cup of PLAIN kernels in the popcorn bag :) . I microwave it for 2:30 seconds in my 1100 watt microwave.
The face wash template is 4'' round. You can find an easy printable template on my blog at the very bottom of the post. Here is the link to that blog post~ gingercake.org/gingercake/201...
To create the Reusable Microwave Popcorn Bag, you will need 2 pieces of cotton fabric that are 12'' x 20''.
TO sew 15 washable face wipes, you will need a piece of terry cloth fabric or chenille (i used a bar towel from the dollar store! Link to that towel in the bog post above!) that measures 18'' x 15''. You will also need a piece of cotton fabric of the same size. If you are buying fabric (and not a towel!) you could make 15 wipes with less waste using fabrics that are 12'' x 20''.
Here are some links to the products I use that you can purchase on amazon...

Thanks for the inspiration! I taught three kids (7, 9, 11) how to make different variations of the face cloths. The two younger kids made squares. The 7 year-old sewed them wrong sides together then used pinking shears to trim the seam allowance. Her parents were really impressed. The 9 year-old sewed right sides together, turned them hand sewed some of them closed so he could watch a video while sewing like Grandma. The 11 year-old did circles, and took FOREVER because she's a perfectionist which isn't necessarily bad but it's not helpful if you have one sewing machine and 3 kids. Next week, we're starting placemats amd napkins cuz it's all about straight lines and a little embroidery for monograms.

Virginia, thanks for the video. The reusable popcorn bag is absolutely brilliant. My son loves popcorns, he would live on them if I'd let him to. I hate the waste it creates, so alredy bought corn seeds to pop. With this bag he'll be able to do it himself, and will be much healtier as we can controll what to use for seasoning.

Great ideas! I've made your grocery bags, and plenty of napkins before. I love the idea of using vintage sheets! I have a gorgeous sheet I've been hanging onto because of the rich colours, but it's too small for any bed of ours and has been patched. I've never seen the popcorn bags before--what a great idea! Great ideas 👍 these would all make great gifts 🎁 I’m definitely making these for our family. The makeup remover rounds are nice and it’s so smart to make them round because they are much faster since there are no corners to turn and push out. Also if you mark you fabric carefully there is hardly any waste 👍. Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas 💡👏👍🧵

Hi Virginia it is always such a treat to see your channel pop up in my notifications, you are my favourite vlogger. I love all your ideas, this year I am trying hard to be more aware of our environment. I am currently making little bags from my stash to put gifts in rather than use wrapping paper. I love the make up pads and have 3 granddaughters aged 27, 21 and 12 so these will be perfect for them. The shopping bags will be perfect for my friends as we do a lot of shopping together 😀😀. I hadn’t thought of serviettes and really love your fabric ones, as a family we have always used paper ones but yours are just beautiful. Virginia I hope we will see more of you, you really are an inspiring and generous teacher. Sending you all my love as always. Dorothy. U.K. xxxxxxxxxx 🙋🏻😘🌟❤️

There's so many items we could make to reduce waste and drain on our budgets. Then there are the landfills. Wish we did more recycling here. I imagine they wash well. I put the fabric right side to wrong side of terry ....mark all the circles... pin, go to the machine and stitch inside each circle about 1/4' and then with pinking shears cut each one out and you are done. With the terry scraps I use them for the tie and make a bag with some scraps and the piece cut off. Put them all in the bag and then it can go in the washer.

Always enjoy you're videos. Broke my arm doing a covid 19 haircut, so haven't been able to sew anything for 2 1/2 weeks. It's driving me crazy.

Ya they are! Iv seen the popcorn bag done with beeswax or plastic covering put on the fabric, so can be used as sandwich or lunch bags . And they become washable.

I think I would place two folded pieces of fabric, folds touching, in the center of the row of pads then sew complete circles. After cutting along sewing lines, a quick flip through the folded edges makes a nice finish. The folded fabric could make a pocket for fingers as you cleanse face.

LOVE the popcorn bags! Could you box the corners of the bottom so that you could eat out of the bag w/it standing up after the popcorn is popped?

Jaime Dornan Lady I boxed the bottom at 1 1/2 inches. They stand up beautifully. I’ve just finished my 10th bag. I’m making them for Christmas gifts.

I believe the popcorn bag is the same as a potato bag for the microwave.

I think I will make the makeup pads a little larger and square to reduce waste and make it easier to turn in the raw edges. Here's another Dollar Tree idea. I couldn't find the medium weight interfacing I needed for a project and bought a few tote bags from the Dollar Tree and the large stitches were very easy to rip. These were not plastic but felt like medium weight. After pressing with the iron I had quite a bit of interfacing!

Question... could you sew and pink the edges, which would eliminate turning. Believe I will try it.😌

What else can the popcorn bags be used for? Veggies? Warming up bread? Does the thread also have to be 100% cotton?
