Am I the only one that thinks Oxventure is much *better* than Critical Roll? I find CR sooooo slow, with entire 4 hour episodes devoted to a single combat or the characters wandering around not sure what to do. While Oxventure tells a complete and satisfying story in 2 hours. (Though I loved the CR cartoon, where 20 hours of actual play was condensed to 20 minute episodes.) I also think Johnny Chiodini is a better DM to learn from and emulate than Matt Mercer. Trying to be like Matt Mercer requires being a professional level writer and actor doing D&D as your full-time job. While Johnny put out a video on Dicebreaker a few years ago explaining exactly how to DM like them, and their explanation made it easy. That video is what convinced me to try DMing again.

The Oxventure was my first in-depth exposure to TTRPGs, and it's remained a firm favourite. I'm also partial to New Zealand's 'Dungeons and Comedians', a live theatre show that's also available as a podcast and, more recently, on KZread. There's been a revolving door of memorable characters over the years, with many cast members who are - or have since become - familiar faces in NZ stand-up, improv, or TV circles. Special mention to characters like Brother Skinner, a lawful evil paladin who serves the blood god Khorne, or Elfonso the Great, a High Elf wizard (emphasis on 'high') who had to make a deal with a demon in order to pass her wizardry exams. Admirably DMed by Brendan Bennetts, with recent seasons accompanied by live illustrations drawn on the fly by a local animator.

Some great ones I know of: Oxventure (because of course); D&D is for Nerds is brilliantly funny and able to jump in anywhere (for the most part); Fables (from David Carmichael of Corridor Crew fame); Corridor's own D&D campaign with live action elements; on that note, VLDL have their own D&D series based on their sketch characters and green screen live action stuff; High Rollers D&D and finally, Dungeons and Daddies. I should also mention Rooster Teeth's own D&D games.

I absolutely LOVE a group called Roll4It. Their best show is a D&D game called Ascension, which is a show where the characters undergo dangerous puzzle filled towers that are the only way to level up in that world. So, I've always loved the Unexpectables. It has a few team four star alumns, so it's prety funny and the GM Monty Glu is a favorite for her worldbuilding and NPC's. I'd also throw out that Actual Play Vids and Podcasts are also a great way to get into other systems, if you find that the high fantasy well runs dry. One of my favorites is actually Dicebreaker. Seriously, go check out their Blades in the Dark, Monsterhearts 2 and Avatar: Legends one-shots. They're pretty great.

A few KZread recommendations which may also have podcasts: Can highly recommend Roll Over & Die (which later turns into Crit The Bed) by the MCM Comic Con peeps for non-stop hilarity, & it does appear to have ended now so no perpetual never-being-caught-up. Also The Black Dice Society has been a really good narrative/character driven campaign from B Dave Walters, & that's still going for a few more weeks. Disclosure: I mod for them. Also also the THAC0 Tuesdays Old School Essentials sessions on Stream Of Blood & the Aristocrits first timer one-shots on JashPlay are fun for those who don't want a long campaign to follow. Then, of course, there's The Dungeon Run which is always a good time but there is a lot of back catalogue, so that's a good one for anyone who does want a long campaign. And for those who don't like D&D, Stream Of Blood's The Neptune Society and Good Time Society's The Calyx (the latter of which I also mod for) provide excellent Call Of Cthulhu fun.

I'd like to throw a recommendation out to Dice Friends by Loading Ready Run. The canadian comedy troupe has put on a variety of campaigns and systems over the years, ranging from the high fantasy of DnD, to the chilling horror and existential dread of the Alien RPG, to the cartoony zaniness of paranoia. Their most recent campaign, the criminally underrated Alabaster Kingdom, features an all black cast and follows a band of mortals in a world ruled by undead overlords, as they must work together to fight back against the forces of wight supremacy.

NADDPOD is the D&D actual play I recommend above all others, in large part due to the momentum & efficiency they manage to cram into hour-long episodes while also razzing each other relentlessly. Murph has fast become one of my favorite DMs for his unbelievable skill with theater of the mind encounters, and his propensity for setting NPCs up to get positively dunked on by the party. Some DMs get upset when the party patronizes & mocks important NPCs, but Murph fully leans into it. For people new to D&D, it's also a great intro because it has different levels of experience from each of its players. Jake had never played before, Caldwell has some experience, and both Emily & Murph are veterans. Add in that Emily Axford is also one of the best D&D players in the world, and you will have your mind blown repeatedly from the moves she just comes up with. Also, this isn't so much a D&D specific feature, but the sound of Caldwell yanking his head away from the mic to scream laugh has become pure serotonin to me. I listen to NADDPOD in my car, and I have almost crashed multiple times from laughing so hard. If cooking is involved, things will get so insane.

My absolutely favorite D&D show that I just can't miss an episode is Shikar, run by Jasmine @ThatBronzeGirl Bhullar, who also gmed for Dimension 20, and top tier cast of Gabe Hicks(who also GMed for Dimension 20), Lord Balvin, Xander Jeanneret, Persephone Valentine(who also starred in Dimension 20) and formely Josephine McAdams. Bronze runs a homebrew setting and watching the show is just that amazing feeling of that comfortable cozy homegame. My second sugestion is Mistletoe, A game run by JoeFudge in a world where Norse Gods are at war with Greek Gods cuz apparently Zeus poisoned Yggdrasil. But since traveling between their two worlds is too costly, the warring gods made a different world into a bridge between theirs, and this new world is home for Arthurian legends! On the cast we have again the amazing Gabe Hicks, the spetacular Mark Hulmes, GM of Highrollers, and OldLadyGamer, Tomato and Brizzyvoices, the last three i hadn't known before but they are excelent cast members!

if people are still looking for spoiler free reviews of the High roller's Lightfall campaign (a year after this video came out), I've seen it all! Lightfall has a very 'home game' feel to it. The story, the jokes, and the characters all feel very personal to the people involved and makes the show very easy to get invested into. If you like a grand, overarching story with a healthy portion of side quests dotted here and there, then you'll like Lightfall. The characters are Cam Buckland, the human cleric. Jiǔtóu Zhìjī Jīng, the tiefling monk. Elora Galanodel, the moon elf druid. And Trellimar Aleath, the drow warlock. They had later additions to the group, such as my personal favourite Reynard Ferehorn, a human ranger. High rollers also has a bunch of guest players who pop up here and there for a short time before dipping again. Their most recent campaign, Aerois, finished not too long ago and it was spectacular. Mark is a wonderful DM who always finds a way to keep things interesting for both his players and the viewer. Highly recommend High Rollers!!!

If you want to expand it beyond D&D, I strongly recommend the two Vampire: the Masquerade campaigns with Jason Carl as Storyteller, LA and New York by Night. The tone is much darker and more serious than D&D, but it’s worth it. The second campaign, New York by Night, is currently on air, with its third episode dropping on Monday. In that regard, B. Dave Walters has a lot of campaigns set in the World of Darkness, and not solely Vampire, if you are looking for more variety. B. Dave also had a relatively successful D&D campaign on cable TV earlier this year, “Invitation to Play” on G4, but it was too flashy for my taste. If you want some more amateur stuff, the rare occasions when Elizabeth Zharoff plays online are very entertaining. She is much more known for her music reaction channel, The Charismatic Voice, which I recommend taking a look at. She recently gave birth, so she won’t be playing any time soon, though.

Not quite an actual play and content is not the most frequent to come out but I love spoonstaff stories, a retelling of a curse of strahd campaign played by a group that interact with the story in a funny way giving it Shawn of the dead vibes

So, I’m assuming anyone watching Dicebreaker is already familiar with their campaigns, and those of their sister channels. May I add recommendations for the various D&D campaigns both Hyper RPG and Perception Studio have run? Perception Check is pure bottled chaos, featuring such felted friends (the ‘P’ word - puppet - isn’t to be used by us meatbags) as Cucumber, Chunk, and Brian, with occasional appearances from Willow, as well as some humans (meatbags). Similarly to Hyper shows, the live audience is very much a player too, influencing the game through voting and (often small) donations. Sahlen’s Legacy is their more serious campaign, and is an excellent home brew story. Trollhunters is/was ‘the most serious’ D&D campaign on Hyper RPG. Including live improvisational music by the amazingly talented Mr Pianopants. If you go to Hyper for hilarious D&D, then check out their Kids On Bikes horror masterpieces, Kollok 1991 Seasons 1 & 2, and Kollok (different name, as it’s set in 2021).

I've recently got into Dice Will Roll, which is a Pathfinder 2e podcast by an all queer cast! It's really fun to listen to, and they're a few episodes into their third campaign now which is the Fists of the Ruby Phoenix adventure path, which is essentially Dragonball and Yugioh smashed up and set in fantasy asia.

My current favorite is Black Dice Society with DM B. Dave Walter's. It is a horror campaign set in the dread domains of Ravenloft. Players are Becca Scott, Sage Ryan, DeeJay Knight, Mark Meers, Noura Ibrahim, and one more player who's name slips my mind (she plays Fen). It has 8 episodes left. It is ending on Episode 60.

Idk, how'd you feel about nat19 but they're my go too. the vestige of ophiucus campaigns been going on for over a hundred hours but they do play on fantasy grounds which is very different from the ones your recommending but it's arguably more accurate to online games and all the players are voice actors either in the abridged world or even in the professional world.

If you want spookier dnd games, Black Dice Society is a good stream to watch. They're wrapping up now with less than 10 episodes left, but there are over 50 episodes to watch and enjoy, and B Dave Walters is a great GM. Also, Mark Meer is a huge Ravenloft fan, so he's not just a part of the game as a player but frequently switches roles to play Azalin Rex, a dark lord archlich.

I keep looking for TTRPG videos that are not DnD...(I know Dimention 20 but the site won't work on my tv.) I would like people to do a Call of Chtulu or a City of Mist (have seen most of those already) I liked the cowboy stuff CR did, but they fired that guy. And that one shot in space the Alien like epp was fun to. I like those kinda RPGs better than DnD...
