I get mormons in my area coming up to me, "we're from the church of x, we'd like to talk to you about y".... I like to reply "Oh, wow. That's unfortunate. I'm sorry to hear that." Act concerned for their well being, ask if there's any way you can help them get away from the church. I've only gotten away with this once without laughing, but man it really threw them off their game

You can't convince the ones that are completely indoctrinated - that's a waste of time. The reason you debate them anyway is that those who listen in on the debate might be more on the fence. It is for their benefit that you spend time on this. Also, you could consider it a mental exercise.

Here's the thing. If this is happening in front of a group of people (either as a speaker or on the street), asking questions isn't really to get them to expand their worldview. It tends to not work. But when you ask these questions, you're really just needing to work on the people listening to that idiot. A lot of the time, they're just sitting there passively listening. When you bring in some common sense, maybe irritate the speaker so that they have to change their script a bit, it restarts the other brains in the room. They start slowly chugging along again. You make them THINK. I don't mean just insulting people or throwing out some meme. Being honest about your feelings does the trick. Almost all of them will go back to their comfortable ignorance but if you can give people a shock of reality, you've done more than enough.

***** Life is a gift. Many people wanted to wake up today but didn't. Waking up every day in a healthy body and with a healthy mind is something a lot of people would give anything to have. I hope you will soon meet some new friends who will love you unconditionally, and that unspeakable joy will enter into your life. Peace!

That third advice reminded me of a scene from Life of Brian from Monty Python: he was running away from a mob after he disguised as a preacher to escape from roman soldiers. Then he starts to lose some objects as he rushes the fuck out from there. At first, his sandal breaks apart, so he tosses it away. Then she accidentally drops a jugg of water, etc. And some of the followers grab these objects and start to worship them, splitting into different factions already to a "startup" religion, something that didn't even exist a few minutes ago. I love that movie.

Or, take your time and explain why you don't believe, the two of you have a good, long talk and work it out. No matter which way you go, even if you do nothing, it will be difficult. There is a lot of good information here on the internet. Good luck.

We need the same kind of suggestions for the nice folks who come banging on our front doors, or has it already been done? I know people who used to invite the door knocking Jehovah's Witnesses into their homes, close the door, and then preach to them about the Norse gods they pretended to worship. "My gods wield war hammers and swords! What is your god's favorite weapon?" "You can't enter Valhalla if you die without a sword in your hand. What are you doing to ensure you get to Valhalla?" Fun and games on a Saturday morning.

I think I'll create a religion based around Lt. Ellen Ripley... think about it, she's very messiah-y. She fights the dark, evil of the universe (the Xenomorphs), puts the needs of the masses ahead of her own needs, sacrificed herself to save us all, and we eventually resurrected... Heck, I could even create an eastern-style "zen"-ish religion from the Xenos themselves... a collective hive mind working only for the greater good and propagation of the species... This shit it just too damned easy...

There was a street preacher that decided to take over a corner near where I live for about a month, every day he'd be out there yelling. So, I noticed the car parked nearby when he was standing around had a bunch of the typical republican propaganda stickers about takers vs makers and all that crap, so I started rolling down my window and yelling "Get a job!" at him as I'd pass by. Others took up the practice, and he stopped standing on the corner.

Noah Nayme I like the idea, but for now I think that fight needs to be concentrated on just keeping religion out of those schools, and the best way to do that would be to "keep atheism away" too. I sincerely believe it is a subject for adults, and the encouraging news is that 80% of the "indoctrinated" become unindoctrinated very quickly after becoming adults. "Attacking" at the grade school level would brig on the wrath of the parents and could even lead to violence.

*****, keeping atheists quiet is how we ended up at this place where America is one of the most religious countries around. We kept quiet because it was impolite, rude even, to do otherwise. Theists took advantage of that. It's time to speak out, everywhere. Edit: But let's not be the jerks these street preachers are. Don't shove it in people's faces. Just be prepared to debate it - calmly, politely - but debate it whenever you are confronted with theism.

@@LabGecko While I agree wholeheartedly with your your sentiments, I don't think that you will find it easy, if even possible, to have a calm and reasoned discussion with a religious zealot. You're going to need a lot of patience (The patience of a saint perhaps?).

Sometimes I really wish I could go back to high school, just so that I can protest all the religious crap they did in that school. At that time, I was just kinda indifferent to religion, mostly because I was still kinda bound by it. I wasn't a strong believer, but I also didn't care if there was prayer or anything like that going on. I would bow my head along with it. Now that my eyes have been opened, I really wish I could go back in time and protest the shit out of it.

Talos is the true god of man! Ascended from flesh, to rule the realm of spirit! The very idea is inconceivable to our Christian overlords! Sharing the heavens with us? With man? Ha! They can barely tolerate our presence on earth! Today, they take away your faith. But what of tomorrow? Do the Christians take your homes? Your businesses? Your children? Your very lives? And what does the government do? Nothing! Nay, worse than nothing! The bureaucratic machine enforces the will of the Christians! Against its own people!

The truly great thing is that they WAY exceeded their goal, to the tune of something over $70,000!!! They have tried to control us with their words of evil, but we are protected by our lord, our savior, Crocs! Crocs shall give us salvation, and spare us from the end of the world! The unbelievers say that the word of the Crocs is false, but they, are the false ones! They'll be praying to the Crocs' feet when armaggedon comes, when Crocs unleashes his wrath upon the nonbelievers and infidels! The boot says Crocs is the one who is evil, and perverted, but this is far from the truth! Don't you all see? He is trying to fool you! To stray you from the right path! But do not worry! There's still time! Submit yourself to the Crocs, and you'll be spared! You'll get to live in eternal life with Crocs, and experience true happiness!

Here's fire for you. Let's assume that the Bible is 100% accurate. How many times does it talk about homosexuality? I think it's something like 7. And it refers to it as an abomination. Ok, that sounds pretty bad, right? How many times does the Bible condemn greed, and in particular the wealthy? Dozens. How many times did Christ himself talk condemn the wealthy? "It's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven." Sound familiar? He talks about it several times. Not once does he mention homosexuality. And while homosexuality might be called an abomination, it flat out says that "the love of money is the root of all evil." So which is worse, an abomination, or THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL?! Why are they spending so much time talking about gays, who even if they are right, are only effecting themselves, and not once are they decrying the ROOT OF ALL EVIL, the wealthy who are destroying lives, destroying the country, destroying our economy, and even indirectly killing people who can't provide for themselves because these people are hoarding all the money for themselves? Just once, I would like to hear one of these Bible-thumping pastors call out the wealthy with the same vehemence that they call out homosexuals. I'd like to see Westboro picket Donald Trump's house, with signs saying "GOD HATES RICH PEOPLE".

When you look at the beginnings of Scientology and Mormonism, you soon realize we humans have the unfortunate ability to believe anything. Just because a 'faith' is centuries older doesn't make it any more authentic. In each case someone came up with an idea and 'sold' it to others. Some ideas stuck better than others, and now we take them as the 'gospel' truth. Thanks Hemant for helping to let the light in.

Why isn't anyone discussing a third option? Ex: we can transplant organs between people nowadays. Why not fetal / embryo transplants? Move the unborn baby from the pregnant woman to a woman who is struggling to get pregnant? No one dies, no one is forced to bring a child to term. Everybody wins! Structure it so that a pregnant woman is incentivized to undergo the procedure, but not so incentivized that she gets pregnant on purpose in future just to go through the transplant procedure. The world needs more problem-solving and less posturing.

There is a preacher that goes to the college I went to and would say horrible things to the students. I was a Christian back then, and I stood next to the atheist and un-preached the preacher. I gave the students a lovely message too. The preacher put me down and called me a sinner. Lol. I love college, it was an eye opener for me, it made me really learn to think independently.

See Lisa Lampanelli response to Westborrow baptiste church (easy to find on youtube). When the Westboro Baptist Church boasted that they would picket comedian Lisa Lampanelli's show in Topeka, Kansas, on May 20, 2011, she decided to donate $1,000 to the Gay Men's Health Crisis for every protester who showed up.

Talos the mighty! Talos the unerring! Talos the unassailable! To you we give praise! We are but maggots, writhing in the filth of our own corruption! While you have ascended from the dung of mortality, and now walk among the stars! But you were once man! Aye! And as man, you said, "Let me show you the power of Talos Stormcrown, born of the North, where my breath is long winter. I breathe now, in royalty, and reshape this land which is mine. I do this for you, Red Legions, for I love you."

One time I was at my cousins house, and he was having an issue with these door to door preachers trying to sell people calendars. Well, his wife's sister had posed in a swimsuit calendar for breast cancer awareness just recently, and they had a copy handy, so I ran out to meet these guys and with the straightest face I could muster (hardly) told them I was also selling calendars for a good cause. One of them was quite bashful but I did get a laugh out of the other. They never came by again.

The bigno card example is cool. I'm part of a facebook group for people who have pet rats, and "backyard-breeders" are a big problem in this area. They often come on the forums or the FB group to advertise their unethical breeding operations, and you can always tell a backyard breeder from a decent, ethical, legitimate breeder by a bunch of different things they say. So we created "backyard breeder bingo" and everyone who we all know well got copies of the a randomly arranged card, some of the spaces included "I don't need to get them vet care, my rats are healthy" or "there is nothing suspect about charging an extra fee for exotic markings," and whenever someone gets a bingo, they just type "BINGO" in the comments and the breeder has no clue what they are talking about. Backyard Breeder Bingo is awesome.

I remember my midschool having a church built on campus. Course, it was always empty and the local taggers had some fun on its siding. Apparently the church bought a chunk of the land part of the campus. I wonder if its still standing?

So a interesting idea that I have seen done by Atheists is they create a pamphlet much like you could get from people preaching. You then just trade pamphlets and go about your way. Great for people who go door to door. When you answer and they hand you a pamphlet, say you have something for them and hand them one in return. Saves you time and if they want to argue whats in the pamphlet then that would be a more engaging discussion.

I rem a street preacher came to my college back in 99 named Brother Jim and he was extra crazy. Well there were some black students around him listening and arguing and he started talking about 2Pac burning in hell. They weren't having any of it and It was amazing to watch. Then he said to the girls they are going to hell for wearing jeans. Im amazed he made it out alive. I don't think he ever came back after that.
