4 Allan Holdsworth-Style Melodic Cells With TAB from 100 Jazz-Rock Licks For Guitar

Фильм және анимация

Note that there are 2 slight variations from what appears in the book in this video: what is in the book, however, remains the 'definitive' version.
In Example 6b here, the Eb and E are reversed so that 8-11-12-9-10 in the book is presented here as 8-12-11-9-10. Both combinations are equally as valid/useful and should be explored as should the other variations of the first 4 notes of the cell which are possible e.g. 11-12-8-9-10 and so on.
In example 6d, the order of the 5 notes on each string is identical but here, the line is presented a little slower in 16ths rather than in quintuplets (5 notes per beat) for demonstration purposes. Again, both approaches are valid and the actual note order is the same.
100 Jazz Rock Fusion Licks for Guitar is published by Fundamental Changes and available now on Amazon in E-book/Kindle and print formats. The book contains over 100 examples, covering licks in the style of fusion’s greatest guitar players, including Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Allan Holdsworth, Larry Carlton, John McLaughlin and others. These are high-protein, high-information lines that span jazz, bebop, blues, rock and shred styles, often within an individual example.
The first nine chapters contain ‘Licks In the Style of…’ starting with a few shorter ‘building block’ type examples before presenting ten full licks which are generally built from these shorter motifs or ‘melodic cells’. The full length examples show how melodic cells can be embellished and developed to create longer lines, giving some sense of the process behind creating and improvising longer, more sophisticated fusion lines. The final chapter draws from the ideas covered in the first nine chapters to demonstrate how fusion lines work over changes/harmony covering both major and minor II-V-Is.
100 Jazz Rock Fusion Licks is aimed at intermediate to advanced guitarists who have a basic grounding in some modes and scales. Detailed breakdowns and explanations of each lick are provided to give a sense of the ‘What' and ‘Why' behind these types of fusion lines. Blues, Rock and Metal players stuck in a predictable ‘diatonic rut’ or those wanting to incorporate extended harmony and ‘outside’ ideas into their playing will find plenty of inspiration and ideas here. The Larry Carlton, Robben Ford and Jimmy Herring chapters would be a great starting point for blues players wishing to branch out and explore some more complex harmony via a blues sensibility.
The licks are all based around a tonic of G, covering a mixture of Minor and Major (dominant 7th) tonalities. This allows for a quicker assimilation of the material as you work through and try the examples as well as facilitating a direct comparison between the individual players’ styles, especially in their scale/note choices but also in their phrasing and approach to articulation/fingering.
Each chapter is built around a unique backing track reflecting the given guitarist’s musical style and approach. These can be downloaded from the Fundamental Changes website along with the licks which are played at normal and half-speed.’

Alan's style will always be remembered as amazing, but it may come across a tad spooky or creepy to the masses.

Hey mate. What file format is the kindle edition in? I want an e-copy, but I don't want to actually read it on my (small) kindle, nor do I want to download an app just to be able to read certain formats on my computer.

Sounds like the answer is a print copy or a new Kindle! Or you’ll have to download an app-should only take a few seconds?!

I have to be that guy and ask what gear you used for this. (Totally aware that technique is the majority of the tone, but I can't help but ask). Buying your book immediately. This sounds amazing. Thanks for this treasure trove!

Ha! I knew you’d turn up sooner or later 😂 I can’t remember exactly but it’s basically a Line 6 Helix Stomp patch I created. I generally put a pedal or two in front of it which it takes remarkably well. Probably some combination of Xotic Compressor/TC Spark Boost and Suhr Shiba Drive which is a really nice warm smooth overdrive. For this kind of fast legato you need to use a drive pedal to make the guitar super sensitive but with a smooth not spiky tone. This can be achieved with everyday boss pedals like the DS-1, Super Overdrive, Blues Driver etc but turn the tone right down to about 8 or 9 o’clock to roll off the high treble, set the gain to about 3 o’clock and then level half way or more depending on what you want in relation to unity gain. I can send you some Helix patches for free if you have one: just email me at nmellor72@icloud.com

It sounds amazing in but at the same time boring if you just did this all the time.. its maths shred. But its real music.. unlike steve vai and that dude with all the neck tatts who keeps flicking the guitar and clicky clicky stuff.
