Earthquakes happen in the northeast, just not as strong as on the west coast. The Adirondacks have earthquakes a couple of times a year. Blue mountain lake in the Adirondacks had one over a magnitude 5, 20 to 30 years ago. Most are usually magnitude 2 to 3.

Felt it here in Boston...
This was the first earthquake that I have ever experienced! I'm grateful that it wasn't fatal!
April 4 2010 we had a 7.2 earthquake here in the Mexicali, Baja Mexico/Imperial Valley, Californis area. Now that was a earthquake. Seemed like it lasted for a minute. On the Mexico side salt water came out of the crack in the ground. On the California side the new fault moved the ground 15 plus feet. I was about to use the comode. The water shot up about three feet. I ran out to join the rest of the family in the middle of our homes buttoning my pants. Some damage to the older home. Nobody was hurt . Except when my wife noticed our 6 year old grand-daughter was still inside the newer home, she ran and pushed opened the front door, as the 6 year old was trying to exit. Instead she got knocked out, but recovered quickly.
As a South-East Asian NY resident who experienced earthquakes on my home country, this event surely gave PTSD especially in the area without fault lines
Looks like the Ramapo Fault just went off. It's not an extremely active fault line by any means, but earthquakes do happen. They are small in nature, and most of the time you don't even feel them. This is one of those rare occasions, and the last time it happened as far as I know of this kind of magnitude was in the 1930s.
