I am still using stock tires on both my traxxas TRX-4s and my redcats. I like the looks of the 4.2 for a future upgrade.

I immediately swapped 4.2” tires onto my SCX10iii. The portal axles really help to alleviate ground clearance issues.

I run 4.2's (Injora "Rocks Tire") on my Gen 8. For now I run it at a local park where the trails are very rocky. Some sections are too much for it, but that's ok. If it could just cruise right over everything they would be no challenge and it wouldn't be as much fun. If I ever get a chance to compete with it I want it to be class 1 legal and I also want to be used to how it drives with the tires I'd have to use.

I use 4.2 for scale look and 4.7 for rock crawling. In the other words, I use 4.2 for trail run and 4.7 if I am doing a lot of rock crawling.

I’ve always ran 4.75 tires but only ever competed in class 2 comps. I’m going to build my new VS4-10 Pro into a class 1 truck after seeing this video. Thanks for sharing.

Both my TRX4 sport is running 4.75 Trenchers with 4.5" hair donuts. My SCX10.3 is running RC4WD 4.2" MTR with 3.5" Hair Do nuts

Great video as usual.👍🏼 I’m using 4.2 RC4wd Goodyear MT/R on my honcho@6 lbs & 4.7 Pro-Line BFGOODRICH KM3’s on my Element@9 lbs. I’m really impressed with the Goodyear’s👍🏼 they are a great all around tire. Rocks,dirt,etc. The BFG’s really good on rocks but not so good in loose dirt.😕 I have a set of 4.45 pit bull rock beast on the way to try. I’ve heard a lot of good thinks about them.

Great review on this topic. You don't see as much in the class 1 tires. I currently did an enduro ifs with the 4.2 and really have to watch the line compared to the 4.7. I added three differences between that AMD my trx4 with the stock tires. My tfs swb has the 4.2 with the soft foams and doesn't side hill as well due to such soft foams.

I have a Gen 7 and use 4.3 to 4.5 are excelent in rocks and trails.

So first biking, then RCing :) Same here in Sofia, Bulgaria!

Need to change link length to adjust for anti squat moving with the taller tire. be interesting of the geometry was kept the same. that is the tire lifting off the ground when accelerating. can help it lift over ledges.

I've gone for Boomracing Extra Wide Rims with Nova Dual Stage Extra Wide Foams. Excellent side hilling on 4.75 Pit Bull Rock Beast tyres.

Thanks Today I learned I need bigger tires because i Love rock crawling and I have 4.2 tires on my rig. Ultimately I'll have all three sizes for each rig I get. My next set will most definitely be atleast 4.7 then 4.8 finally a couple 4.2 to really practice for competitions.

4.2 Proline TSL G8 Super Swampers on my SCX10II Wrangler. Love the scale aspect and general performance. I would like some more GC of course. The sliders are hitting quite a bit on the rocks.

Great video, as always you guys take a methodical approach that makes the difference! Can I throw one more into the mix? Have been wondering myself, straight axle with 4.7" or portal axle with 4.2"? Best of both worlds perhaps?

I like that you used a trail bob to haul your trucks.

I guess for me it depends on what rig and terrain I am running for the day. If it is my leaf spring Sawback then it is is the 4.2 tire and less aggressive trails. (less boulder rocks). And they really do a great job. Less roll overs for sure. But if I running a lot of boulder rocks (aggressive terrain) then I use the 4.7 and the TRX4.

Interesting review. I have VS410 pro I just used some metal bead locks with the stock wheels they are 4.65. I think something in between works best on the 410. However I recently built a SSD trail king, kept it Scale with RC4wd K5 Blazer hard body and 1.7 inch rim tires that are 4.19 inch. It is smaller and has more rubber finding that for the overall look and performance at class 1 this is a real sweet spot. Not all the builds are performance only you want that real scale rig look so you sacrifice here.

Premise: it's much time I would ask you to use also European units of measurement... thanks.😉 Your analysis is sharp as usual ! We have tried some 100-110 mm tires but the overall performance was worse than 117-120 mm specially for: - traction (less footprint) - ground clearance - ability to overcome a sharp step (the more the tire has a bigger diameter, the more the angle it approaches the edge of the step is flat, 45 degrees instead of 90) [it's not so easy to explain...I hope to be understandable] I practice Trial and these bikes have a front tire with a bigger diameter for the reason above, even if a smaller would be lighter (really useful in Trial driving). In the end we have adopted 117-120(125) mm tires for all Crawlers !

I graduated from 4.75’s to 4.19’s. 4.19’s have made me a better crawler. I can still out crawl the 4.75 guys in my group with injora 4.19’s. It blows their mind when my element trailrunner does what theirs struggles to do. I’m looking for a better set of tires but the 4.19 choices are pretty limited and I don’t want your typical landmine hyrax or km3’s. It would be awesome if they made trenchers in a class 1 size.

Me too! This is a natural water feature in California. They abandoned it when they realized it's a drought state.

I only use 4.45" or smaller on my Pro. On my TRX4... I go with whatever since I use it more of a basher-ish crawler running 3s on a Hobbywing Axe 3300kv.

Most of the observations seem logical to me. Now they are demonstrated here. The disadvantage is the ground clearance, the advantage is center of gravity. Depends on the course which one to use. I keep a set of 4.2 at the ready!

I WAS actually wondering! I often run 4.45"-4.5" on mine... Those are often the Clone Tires I can afford. It surprises me that there's not more 4.5" options, as that MIGHT make a nice compromise!! 😉 Stay SAFE Guys!!😷 Carmine ✈🚂🚙

4.3 to 4.5 should be the most popular size with the most choices. Unfortunately someone decided that 4.75 is better. They must enjoy having to either raise the body, or cut the fenders off all their rigs 🤷🏻

Nice comparison. Funny thing traction is....sometimes less contact patch means more traction because theres more weight concentrated on that smaller area....sometimes. As time goes along I see myself running smaller tires , it's just funner....not a scale "33" or "35"....that's for Mall-Crawlers. I like a scale 44 or close. For example a 4.19 on a true 1/10th scale rig like a Clodbuster body on 10.2 or Trailfinder chassis....that's fun.

I’m using both at times I have 4.75 hyrax and 4.09 RC4WD BF Goodrich KM3’s for that scale look on my enduro Builder’s kit with a Pro-Line 66 Chevy body. I love the hyrax for its performance but really like the scale look of the BFG’s I’m thinking about trying the RC4WD Goodyear MT/R in 4.75 to get the realistic looks and hopefully getting good performance.

Yeah, we always discounted 4.2 tires a handicap in every way and a limitation to keep things equal in competition or to make things look more scale and realistic. So it's cool to discover beyond that.

I think the difference between the two is about a half inch. Did I win something for answering the question?? Lol, I love running the 4.2’s and right at about 4” straight up. Nice showing fellas, we all the this channel

I'd like to see how a 4.7 on a 2.2 rim would have compared. I wonder if it would have split the difference. That is what I run. I want different foams to better test the tires, the set I have is too firm and the tire does not mold around obstacles the way I want, I need to grab some dual stages. They work great for general trailing, but more serious rocks I feel like I don't have the traction I want.

4.75 on non portal rig with body mods for lower COG. Also wider wheel hexes.

I run a 5.7 on my trx4 weighted wheels & diff housings to keep it upright

Any recommendation for a good set of rims.. heavy and with beadlock for TRX sport ?

I usually use 4.7 I like the hyraxes.

I use both, i have an hpi venture with 4,7 and a trx4 sport with 4,2

The only way to really know is to buy a crap load of tires and different foam. And try them out. Or listen to you. But its expensive unless you have friends to trade with. You just can't know intill you try a different tire. Although this help

Robert Hall I have heard the Hyrax aren’t the best for mud. Better on rock. Krawlers are suppose to be good in mud.

Of course smaller tires are going to have better side support. Taller tires and better foams are still better

Better for what though? Clearing an object that's centered between the tires? Sure. A half inch taller tire will give you a half inch more clearance. You saw the side hill test, and the power climb test. The proof is right there. Do most of us want to impress our buds? Of course. But, I will have to go with RcReview on this one. Crawling isn't always about clearing a rock or root.

What weight shock oil do You run in the Vanquish ?

Great video! I use a 120mm (4.6) but I’m trying to assemble a class 1 truck with a TRX4 chassis and a Defender pick-up (truck cab) body to enhance my driving skills. In your opinion what is the best realistic (no Hyrax) class1 tire under 106mm (4.2)? Many thanks!

I don't know about 4.2 but, I have a bunch of 4.19 tires. My favorite size of tire is 4.45 or 4.5 tire. It's a nice sweet spot. A few manufacturers offer that size.

what wheels are on the 4.7??

personally for me I love the 4.2 Goodyear mtrs and the Mickey Thompson mtz and I was going to use them on two storm chaser trucks but after I realise I found the limit how far could they go in swollen creeks around my area I'm more likely to go with 4.7 Goodyear mtrs and 2.2 Mickey Thompson ttc as my 2.2 tyres can be an absolute beast when it comes to go through massive floods which just means to truck has a lot more capability and potential

Not yet! I don't think we want to do that since there will be so much rubber on the sidewall to give support. The TRX-6 uses a 2.2 inch wheel with a 4.7 inch tire and it works well. Good support and it doesn't balloon much at high speed.

I wish there were more 4.65 sizes, seems to be a happy medium, and looks better.

I felt like the proline foams were too soft. I have CI medium outers and I still feel like they are too soft

So I have the pitbull rock beast in both sizes the 4.45 and the 4.75 will i notice a big difference between those 2?

The tire is the last gear ratio between the motor and ground. A taller tire gives less mechanical leverage for the motor. So you’ll get more torque twist because the axle input torque required to move it is so much higher. Try using a lower gear ratio sour and pinion to match the vehicle speeds up and this advantage will likely go away outside whatever COG effects may play into it.

You said your running the dual stage foam from proline in the 4.19s? Was it hard to get it in. Did you have to alter the foam?

Would you say the Ultra is worth the extra money over the Pro?

I'm waiting to put 37s on my 1st gen taco. Need Marlin to drop his IFS though.

Since 4.2” = 42 inch tire in real life, I find the 4,7 less realistic or too monster build. I like the 4.2

5:50 - I thought the bigger tyres would keep their momentum better because they hv more mass.

I've been trying the trx6 tire ...would that be the best of both worlds? saw you test them once, then nothing.

I run 3.8's with portals so people dont complain

I feel 4.7/XL are the new training wheels. 4.19 has its disadvantages but can for most part go same places as xl size tires.

Please testing tire in mud sir, which one the best?

I've done a few side by side tests with 4.19" and 4.75" tires. The rocks where I drive are more slippery with tires that have big contact patch. Rocks here are mostly smooth where you can spin wheels for a day and not ruin your tires even if they are soft predator, alien, or x2s3 compound. The smaller 4.19" tyres have smaller contact patch but better grip on rocks, always. On sand bigger is better. Videos in my channel if someone is interested. So in a conclusion, if you remove the bumpers and keep the body small, the smaller 4.19" tire is a winner.

4.6 size would be nice, they just do not make to many in that size. That size is nice, not overly big and they look good one the trucks still.

i use several rigs with different tyres , what ( I ) find is the challenge you expect the rig to tackle . if and i mean if you can climb all and any challenges set out for you then i have one question , ( where is the fun .) where is the challenge ? i can have as much fun with a low spec rig doing smaller challenges as i can with a big rig doing bigger challenges . its all in the eye of the beholder .i also go fishing . what i hear you say ??. well we have a saying when fishing . ( sometimes the fish has to win ) .

So a 2 ply VS. a 10 ply is In the foam you would use??……..

Run the 4.7's with printed inserts or Flubber stufferz

4.2 all the way. Plus they look better I think.

Ah, great question. Just verifed that the 4.2 inch tires are using dual-stage foams that are very similar but not Proline. They are made by Cross-rc, just for 4.2-3 tires.

I think a 4.7 tyre is a 47" in real life. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Robert Hall I think what other people say is more accurate. Most bodies are more 1/8 to 1/9, not truly 1/10. I remember reading somewhere that the axial Cherokee body dimension wise was 1/8. So could be around 37” scale.

Hummmm I shoul say 4.2 tires have more grip and it can be easily understood. Take the same car (same chassis = same weight) 4.7 tire has more contact patch than 4. 2 because its wider. But here comes the twist. More contact patch equals to weight being distributed by a larger area, hence LESS pressure per square inch. And therefore less traction. A leaner and smaller tire distributes the same weigh in a smaller contact patch, exerting more pressure per square inch, and therefore more pressure...or traction

Good point. The foam has to be matched on the bigger tire so it still conforms to terrain ideally.

4.2´s also look much better ,more scale and more realistic
