was that a 4890 case? they're a good cold starting machine. they've gotten lots of locals out of trouble in early spring here. because they could lay out in a field all winter and start whenever you needed it to as long as batteries were up

I actually love the d12 engine series, they fire right up in the cold. worst issues it had were leaks, before egr came in that is. does yours have the shutter assembly (epg) on the turbo?

Could you tell us what models of what are being started. Is that Gleaner an N7? What was the first thing started?

Hello SilverGleaner! sorry for the very very epicly slow reply! the Gleaner i started in this video was an N6 I do however have 2 N7s! First thing that was started is a Versatile 895 with a 310 HP Cummins, Next thing was a Case 4890 with a 300HP Scania, after that was a 96 Volvo with a D12 425 Volvo, after that was the N6 with the 220HP Allis-Chalmers, and after that we finished up with a 2360 John Deere swather with a Perkins 4 Cyl. Not the right engine for the swather, was put in by previous owner so I don't know the specs! If you would like too watch me fire up one of my N7s check out this link! Smokey Gleaner N7 cold start! Thank you!!

+MegaHosscat : Actually, the choice is clear... If you don't need to use it, don't start it! Now, if you actually do need to run and use the machine, and no block heater is available for proper pre-heating, using ether is fine if used CORRECTLY. You then need to let the engine warm up a good long while to get it up to operating temperature. You don't just fire an engine up to watch it struggle and blow smoke out the exhaust to boost your childish ego and then shut it off. Nothing worse for it. There's an awful lot of ignorance about diesel engines floating around the world. It's quite irritating to me how ignorant people are, as I've been around diesels my entire life, and it's not rocket-science. Oh, and if you don't have a direct A/C power source available, there are also these things called portable generators for powering a block heater.

That's why there's a space in between 4 and 300, indicating there are 4 cold starts....

Unless there is a reason to use the equipment, why cold start it for no reason? Seems pretty pointless to risk unnecessary wear and tear on your machine's engines just to boost your ego to see fuel smoke come out of the stack. I don't run any of my equipment in the winter unnecessarily. Additionally, all you are doing is wearing your starter motor out by over-cranking and needlessly running your batteries voltage down, risking ruining them from freezing by too low of a charge. I don't run any of my equipment in the dead of winter unnecessarily. It just doesn't make any sense.

This can be good actually. The long cranking time gets oil to the turbo before the engine starts, and over time, the cylinder walls can actually get marks in it so running it at least once a month keeps it from doing that. some small engine manufacturers actually will cut your warranty if you don't run the engine for at least 15 minutes one time each month.
