In the 2021 nationals, 31 boys went under 4:20 for the mile. 10 boys ran 4:10 or faster. 2 boys ran 4:03. So yeah, if you're training boys to run at nationals, then saying that 4:20 isn't fast seems objectively true. I would also say that it's important for anyone in any program to understand that you shouldn't have some kind of ego trip about how fast you are if you're not able to run faster than 4:20. It's not that you are putting people down, but you don't want your fastest runners to settle for less than they may be capable of just because they are the fastest on their team or in the county or whatever. For most people, running is about personal improvement and trying to break your PB, and it's not like you should have your feelings hurt if you're a 5:00 miler and someone tells you that it's not a competitive time. Doesn't mean you're less of a person. Just means you should not expect to win any major competitions. And that's okay.

Mile Times for Teens In most parts of the U.S., high school boys who can run a sub-4:00 mile can be very competitive on high school track and cross country teams (the most elite can run an under 3:60 mile). At 16 I beat everyone my age at 4:30. I had no one to train with or push me to go faster. The coaches didn’t set goals, training or racing strategies for me. The people that excel are pushed by their parents, coaches, friends. I’m guessing I could have gone 4:18 because I could run a 1:56 800m, but will never know. I remember reading that Seb Coe’s father would ride in the car next to him pushing him. That’s the kind of push you need.

It isn't blazing fast for high schoolers at all. It is a strong time, but 4:20 mile converts to around a 4:01 1500m. That wouldn't get you into a national final for U17s in the UK, and certainly not for year 13s (final year high school). UK population is way smaller too

More high school runners need to hear this message! I was stuck in high school at 4:34 - 4:38 (over 10 races in this short range). Not to blame anyone else but me, but as a youngin’, I was slightly intimidated by my head coach who would yell “SLOW DOWN” if I dared run a sub-65 second first lap even though I felt good. Yes, my 3rd lap was always trash, but I had this mental block that killed my time improvement. I know it was only mental, because I stopped breathing heavy within a minute after the race.

I agree with the sentiment of this quote. We have to help kids realize a) what elite is, and also b) what their potential is. I continually tell kids that their biggest limitation is their own belief. Right now I am in the process of taking a very young coop program (10 years!) and helping kids see that 30 miles in a week is not insane, that a 5 minute mile for a guy is not elite, and that 18 minutes should not be something only a top runner does in the 3 mile (we dont race a 5k in Illinois). My goal is to get my top girl under 5 in the mile her senior year, and then this spring get my top boy 800m runner under 1:54. Records are not only meant to be broken, but also to show people that someone has done it before.

It really depends on what state and what classification. For large schools competing at boys state finals in California or Illinois, it’s not fast and likely won’t get you a medal. But, for a small school classification in a low population state like South Dakota, that’s state winning time and a podium position. It’s all relative in comparison.

Ultimately, it’s not about what is fast or isn’t. It’s about ego. Once you or your athletes think you’ve “made it” in terms of your speed or mileage or whatever it might be, most pump the brakes. Making sure your team isn’t trying to be average, but each is improving, is the goal of coaching- and if your guys aren’t willing to admit they need to improve, odds are, they won’t. Except the average runner will still never achieve these speeds no matter the training. This mindset helps your best students thrive and abandons the rest. That's how you run an Olympic training program not a high school. Keep the expectations realistic because your teaching the whole team not just the fastest kids.

It’s all relative but yeah coaches need to be transparent with kids. You may be elite in a conference or immediate area running a 4:20, and in that circumstance yeah it’s very notable and an achievement. However the lines get blurred when a kid is given that praise without seeing the full scale of the sport at that level. Really if the kid doesn’t get to a state level meet he won’t have a clue and that’s not fair to them.

saying running 420 in high school is not fast is ridiculous. it will win 95 percent of dual meets.yes its not Jim Ryun territory but not everyone can be a Ryun. its like telling an olympic lifter(my sport) that a 350 pound clean and jerk is not strong when the record is 425.if you are running a 420 you have put in a lot of training and you know very well what the times are you have to run to be competitive at the next level. you don't need this guy putting you down. the fact that complete strangers call him out on this says a lot....

What he said is true, but I would have said it a little more gracefully. If you're able to run a 4:20 mile, that is nothing to be ashamed of {UNLESS} you have the ability of clocking a sub 50 {400}. If say for example you can turn a 49 {400} but only run 4:20 in the 1 mile, then YES that is a HORRIBLE 1 mile time. But if you're someone who clocks 50 mid/50 high in the 400 and runs a 4:20 mile, then I will ALWAYS tip my hat to that person before the 400 burner with a 4:20 mile. And here's the thing: if you're a 48 or 49 {400} guy, it's not as if you're in any danger of making a 400 Olympic team - if you find yourself in that 48/49 range, YOU'RE IN NO MAN'S LAND !! You got speed, but you're certainly NOT a "sprinter". The ONLY thing for you IS the mile or 1500, and if you're a 4:20 mile guy, then you're a failure as a sprinter AND a middle distance runner.
