For better results, you had to use both clear coat napkins. The second is for 15 min after the first one was applied.

You need to polish your headlights after you sand them. That's why your lights got a little hazy again. The 3m clear coat is applied after you finished polishing your headlights. When you polish your headlights that's where the shine comes back making your headlights look brand new again. Then you seal it with the 3m coat. Your headlights looked decent with just the sanding and the 3m clear coat because the 3m clear coat is a wet solvent. Just like back in the day they used to and still today sell the wax that makes your headlights clear without sanding but anyone who uses those products knows that after a couple washes your headlights go back to that hazy affect. Doing no sanding on bad headlights and just putting in the wax will make your lights look good but that's a temp fix.. Also your headlights had a little bit of yellow on there still because when you sand you need to do it more to get all the yellow road tar off. they shouldn't be yellow at all after sanding. And then when you polish there should be no sign of yellow. But when you sand with 800 don't press too hard just a light pressure and even sand over the whole headlight. Then as you move up you can go a little bit harder. The 2000 and 3000 remove those scratches you made with the 800 and 1000 then the 1500 removes the previous and the higher you go removes the previous scratches. You can actually stop at 200 grit and then polish but for an extra step and easier polish you can take it a step further and hit it with 3000 then compound and polish and seal. So again. Masking tape around headlights, wet sand, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000, compound - if you have a buffer use the orange medium pad for compound, then polish with black pad or white pad. That gives it that brand new OEM look, then seal with the 3m clear coat. Done. Good job though.

The haze is most likely from an uneven application method shown here. The clear coat alone should be enough to fill light scratches from 3000 grit sandpaper. No need to polish in fact the would reduce adhesion the same way primer and base coat isn't polished before clear coating a panel with a paint gun

The instructions from 3M even says to apply right after sanding, that the tiny scratches will allow for better bonding.

He did ok, following instructions aplying right after sanding after 3000. But you are right for deeper clear nd yellow removal he will have to sandem 400-500 up to 3000, apply clear, nd finish up with a nice compound cutting pad for crystal clear.

@el_mas_odiado You mean we can further improve the 3M clear coat by using something like Chemical Guy's optical grade polishing compound system 32/34/36/38 on foam pads ?

Just some advice, the best way to apply that clear coat is by using continuous, overlapping wipes. So this would mean going in either horizontal or vertical motions for the entire headlight. The way you applied it may cause some high spots or uneven application. However, I'm sure the way you applied it would provide sufficient protection.

  • @ripd97

It hazed out because you were over lapping on the clear coat wiping, you only wipe once across the area you went over.

For new headlights, no sanding is needed. Good to go to wipe on 3M clear coat after a good wash, throughout water resins and wipe it dry with microfiber towel. Blow it dry by a hair dryer or may be let it sit dry for 5 minutes.

Your brand new car’s headlights have a clear coat already that should last 4-6 years. After that. when you will probably need to sand, polish, and apply a clear coat. You can during the early years apply an anti UV coating spray designed for interior dashboards to help keep the original clear coat working longer.

I agree. Two things I found that helps make them last longer is park out of direct sunlight when you can & wax the headlights when you wax the truck/car. I live in Thailand which gets it’s share of sunlight & got about 10 years out of my headlights before I needed to change them.

The reason it hazed after a couple of hours is because you just used the 3000 grit without polishing it afterwards. Headlight clear coat isn't anywhere as thick as spray paint clear coat and doesn't cover haziness as well.

Best thing ever to seal your headlights. Get Meguiar's Headlight coating! After you coat your headlights. It will last minimum 14 months even 3 yrs. Or more when keeping your ride out of the sun and or in a garage etc. ✌️
