3D Printed Business Card Dispenser (Cleveland Maker Faire Prep!)

To get ready for the Cleveland Mini Maker Faire, I printed up some awesome business cards to help attendees find me on social media! Unfortunately, I can't hand them out personally while I am onstage giving my presentation. To solve this, I designed and 3D printed a business card dispenser that mounts on any flat surface, so that anyone who wants a card can walk up and grab one.

    Your videos are amazing! I love how you take your time to make them perfect instead of rushing to produce them at a lower quality.

    Neat little project! If you leave out the one screw and standoff on the back you should be able to slip a new pack of cards in without having to remove 7 screws.

    This project is really cool. I’d love to find/design something similar. I’d really like to make a pocket friendly version of This but with a means to top load the cards without having to remove the six screws to do so. I’m thinking perhaps the top plate could be hinge open at the front corner where the cards are dispensed and utilize a battery door style spring clip to constrain the rear to the of the door. Probably easier ways to skin this cat, though, lol. I really enjoyed your video and am excited to look through your other projects!

    Thanks for watching! A spring clip design sounds super cool! If you end up making one of these, please let me know. I would love to see how it works!

    The link to the standoffs is incorrect. It requires 1 inch.and it brought me to 0.457 inch. Help!

    Hi Brandon, thanks for the heads up! I just checked and unfortunately there are no other 4-40 1 in long round standoffs on Amazon at the moment, which is why the page is redirecting. There are hex standoffs, but the outer diameter of these is a little too big to work with the hole placement in the 3D printed part. That being said, the 0.457 in long standoffs will work -- it just means that the dispenser will hold fewer business cards. I bet that the 1 in standoffs will be back in stock soon, though, so if you need those, keep checking back!

    Brandon Robins That’s definitely a good solution, too! Depending on how quickly you need them, you could also give Fusion 360 a shot to model the standoffs and 3D print them. I would model a 1in long cylinder with the outer diameter of the metal standoffs and a hole through the center that is a little smaller than the clearance size of a 4-40 screw. You should then be able to slowly drive the screws into the plastic to make the thread. You can check out my camera mount video for more information about Fusion 360 - it is free for hobbyists and makers!

    Roberts Darkevics Yea unfortunately I did not have a set of springs in the box that were an inch long. I plan on ordering appropriate length springs online before Maker Faire.

    Their diameters are too large. With proper diameters, you could probably stack two springs by placing a larger washer between them.

    Hi everybody. I need to do around 15 units of this wonderful item Alex had created and generously shared with to the public. I am not a 3D skilled person. So, I am wondering if somebody from this chat would be willing to help me and of course I will pay for that.....Or at least I need the acrylic pieces accurate shaped and then I could search by myself to find a place willing to cut the other ones and then I will assemble them. . Thank you in advance.

    Ah ok, VistaPrint is quite a popular one in The Netherlands, so I'll have a look at them. The holder you made looks nice, though don't the cards scratch when taking them out?

  • @SuperMakeSomething

    @SuperMakeSomething

    Aroop Roelofs Thanks! The cards do push against the lip of the top plate, but because the spring stiffness is low, the force isn’t very high, so I haven’t had any noticeable scratching yet.
