I guess, in the range between this nice knurled sculpture and the upscaled working model there is somewhere a *duino-based thing with linear and rotary encoders and LCDs for output. (Subtraction works, too, with the experimental firmware from a GitHub fork)

@@ChrisStaecker i do some CAD stuff, i'm tempted to make one that can properly pop the doink, maybe even let the sliders move. if anyone else wants to make one, don't wait on me because i may never do it, you can probably make it higher quality anyways.

@Minty1337 In seriousness, my main goal was to minimize the number of pieces to print, and make assembly very very easy. If you want everything to move and doink, the original design by Marcus wu does it all. I thought briefly about how I could make the doink work without requiring more pieces, but I couldn’t think of a good way to do it.

@@ChrisStaecker i was thinking of something in-between the display model you made, and the functional version, my intent is for my version act as a fidget toy. it'd still be simple since it's not actually doing any math, probably only like 5 unique parts, the sliders being simple flat duplicate prints. just have an internal cylinder with rails for the sliders and an external cylinder that goes overtop and holds everything together. and i think i could get the doink to work without adding any pieces, or at least, making the separate pieces into a single print-in-place thing, but idk exactly what i'll do yet, if i do this project at all.

I have some problems with the model. Importing into Bambu studio reports errors and builds the model without the hole at the top (maybe the "Windows only" "Fix Model" would help?). Importing into oneshape did not work either. Who wants a curta without crank? (But the knurls came out beautifully). 🥰

  • @ChrisStaecker

Hmm. I use Cura Ultimaker, which doesn’t complain about the model. Filling in the hole is maybe caused by bad normals in the file? I’ll give it a look, but I’m pretty bad at modeling. Maybe somebody else encountered something similar? I’m happy to revise and reupload the file if it can be improved.

  • @ChrisStaecker

I think I might have fixed it, or at least improved it. Can you try this one: faculty.fairfield.edu/cstaecker/curtasolid-body-new.stl If that's better, I'll replace the upload at Thingiverse. (I needed to recalculate normals in blender- the faces across the top were all pointed inwards instead of outwards.) The crank and ring files are OK, right?
