    I think that making 3D screens like the 3DS ones is only possible because they are quite small in size. In the research lab of my engineering school they were developing a 3D screen more akin to a PC screen in size (it was 4/3 and between 17 and 21") without the need to use special glasses. But I heard it was massively complex, as the bigger the screen is, the higher the viewing angle is on the sides of the screen and the hardest it is to make the 3D effect work correctly on the sides.

    Finally, another fan of the 3D effect. For a long stretch of time, the 3DS was my main gaming console, and it was only after moving on to the Switch and PC that I realized how big of a difference the added depth perception makes in many kinds of games.

  • @OkMakuTree

    The 3D effect was lovely when it worked, it literally added depth to the visuals and made game worlds pop! But as you said the requirements to make it work on the original 3DS were kinda a pain, and not enough games emphasized the 3D to the point where I’d kinda forget 3D was an option unless I accidentally bumped the slider. I wouldn’t mind seeing it return either but some tweaks would definitely help to make 3D gameplay more enticing to use.

  • @Derpalon

    The 3DS really needed to launch with the specs of the New model. That version fixed the main problem with the original by having the built-in camera constantly adjust the 3D effect to your eye position automatically so you don't have to do it yourself. Luckily I waited to get the system until after this model was out, so I pretty much have the 3D effect turned on at all times. One thing I will say is disappointing with it though is that apparently the 3DS doesn't even output full 480p; meaning it's running at a resolution _below_ standard definition. While it is a tiny screen so it doesn't look so bad, I can only imagine how effective the 3D effect could be on a more powerful device that could actually output in HD. That's where a 3DS 2 would be nice. But again if I'm being entirely honest, I don't know how a 3DS 2 would fit into the modern console landscape. Nintendo has already essentially consolidated their mobile and home consoles in the form of the Switch, and it would only feel like a downgrade now if Nintendo were to go back to producing a handheld-only device alongside the Switch, especially when there is a Switch Lite model now as well. At this point I would much rather prefer Nintendo iterates on the Switch than revisiting the 3DS, as the mobile + TV dual functionality is simply a more beneficial design. I guess they could incorporate the 3D effect into a Switch 2 of sorts, but again it would feel kinda weird that it would only be usable while in mobile mode. But eh, I'd still take it I suppose.

    Also the 3DS uses a assymetrical filter which means to get the 3D it cuts it's resolution in half. With the 3DS already being 376p that being halved to just 188p is quite noticable.

  • @Derpalon

    @Derpalon

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@ringyring Problem is, the only reason the 3DS technology works as good as it does is precisely because it's on a small handheld screen where only 1 person is looking at it from a singular angle. The 3D effect only works because a camera on the front side of the 3DS tracks your eye movements and keeps the 3D effect adjusted to the angle and distance of your eyes. If you have multiple people sitting on a couch at different angles, the effect suddenly doesn't work anymore.

    I was one of the early adopters at launch, and I've had the 3D slider maxed out at all possible times. It was just too cool to be able to peek in to this interactive diorama unfolding in a magic box in your hands. There are games with bad 3D, but I was barely in my teens when this system came out and could only afford a few games per year, so I'd get the big releases and first parties, which all generally had good 3D. I'd consider myself lucky in that the 3D effect never bothered my eyes. It might've irritated me for a few days after trying it, but after that, I can have marathon sessions and go as long as I want with max 3D and feel fully comfortable. I know this wasn't the case for so many others. Maybe it just takes a while to adjust? But that's far too inconvenient for the 3D to ever catch on. Honestly, when done well, games in 3D are just soooo much more immersive. The added depth is huge, it makes worlds feel like more than just pixels. VR is the next step I guess, but it's requires a whole different way of playing and conceiving games, not something you can easily adapt existing games to.

    It's a shame that only Nintendo and Nvidia ended up being the only two companies that supported 3D with their hardware, and they both dropped support back to back, with the first wave of lowering support coming when Nintendo stopped producing titles with excellent 3D support and Nvidia mostly not acknowledging their 3D Vision stuff/stopped pushing companies to support it directly leaving it up to fans to handle all of the 3D fixes, and then later with Nintendo completely dropping the 3DS line and Nvidia pushing out a driver update that disables 3D Vision entirely, thus rendering the hardware useless if you accept the latest drivers and/or buy a new GPU that requires newer drivers. The Dark Souls Trilogy, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Hollow Knight, Path of Exile, A Hat In Time, Resident Evil Revelations (....in HD with kb+m support), Borderlands 2, The Surge duology, Bloodstained Ritual of the Night, Fallout New Vegas, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy 9, Soul Calibur 6, Street Fighter 5, Divinity Original Sin, there are just so many games that look so much better in stereoscopic 3D on the PC. Add on top of that emulators, including Citra, the 3DS emulator itself to play 3DS games with their native 3D support brought to the big screen at ultra HD resolutions, and nothing else can really compare. I have a VR headset too, but the resolution is a pretty huge downgrade from my monitor, but it at least tries it's best to do the job. On Citra, there's even a simple hack that you can do to increase the 3D effect up to 255% of it's original value compared to an actual 3DS. For now, the sun seems to be setting on this golden age.

    The 3D effect wasn’t the only underrated and underutilized thing the 3ds was king for. AR and Street Pass! The 3ds had amazing use of AR and still the best I’ve seen AR used! If you had the AR cards at the ready you’d have a few games to play on your table, like shooting targets, in which one portion of the target shooting, you table literally opens up to reveal a small room where you have to look around and find the target. That is still mind blowing to this day. Also they had an AR Fatal Frame game that was awesome fun! It was called Spirit Camera, and had an AR book where cutscenes played on some pages and other had hands and faces pop out of them! And as for street pass, it was awesome gather Miis of people you’d run into and playing games with them as well! It was fun know that just by running into other 3ds user was helping you in certain games. And those Street Pass games were so addictive and fun! The music was really good in those games too! Seriously, 3ds is an absolute king when it comes to technology! Just not beefy specs that people unoriginally clamor for these days.

But the games I've played so far of the 3DS and have turned the 3D option on, I gotta say I was amazed, being Sm4sh the game that literally showed me why I love so much the 3DS family, not only that game had a neat relive around models that make them look awesome in the 3DS(effect that you can't explain in video, becuase you need to live it and FEEL it) but the 3D effect added a lot of depth on it, though, I didn't used it too much because I have a poor view and after some minutes I start getting a headache. It's a nice mechanic that unfortunately wasn't used properly in the Main titles by Nintendo and neither in the Third party games.

    I fucking love the 3D on 3DS. It makes games way better in my experience. Even on the old 3DS, I used it all the time. I bought a New 3DS specifically for the enhanced 3D experience. The only game I didn't use the 3D in was Resident Evil Revelations, which is a shame because that's a beautiful game. Unfortunately the aiming reticle didn't quite work correctly with the 3D on. Even though I like the game a lot overall, Pokemon Moon really disappointed me with how you can't use the 3D in battles anymore. It makes the battles feel kind of weak in comparison, lodged between the immersive 3D battles of XY and the more colorful HD battles of Let's Go.

    I remember playing on other peoples 3DS's back when they where new but I was never able to even see the 3D effects. Here lately I've been restoring all my old "retro" systems from my childhood. So I've also been buying up old hardware when I find it for cheap. I picked up a OG blue 3DS a few days ago at a yard sale for $20. No charger but they had 3 games with it. Luckily I had one of those cheap USB multi chargers that works for DS + 3DS + PSP and not only does it work perfectly the battery still holds a good charge. Anyway for the first time I can actually enjoy the 3D effect from the 3DS. The games look amazing in 3D now. To top it off the 3DS has some of my favorite classic titles like Ocarina of time and Majoras mask and the 3D looks amazing in both of them. I still have my switch and steam deck that I really enjoy playing. But I really do hope Nintendo makes another 3DS like handheld alongside the new Switch that's suppose to be coming in 2024.
