393. Bingley Five Rise 250th Anniversary

Ride down Bingley Five Rise Staircase Locks, a magnificent feat of engineering, being the steepest flight of locks in England with a gradient of about 1 in 5, situated in the Aire Valley, West Yorkshire on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. A VIP/Media day was organised by the Canal & River Trust on 21st March, to commemorate their 250th Anniversary. Please watch to find out more about these Grade 1 Listed locks and their history.

A superb showcase for the Bingley Five Rise. I have often suggested you come up north to experience what this canal has to offer, and now you have. Well done Alan.

Thanks Harry for your appreciation. This is the second video I've made on Bingley Five Rise, the first was last year, numbered 347, do you recall seeing that one? It was a look at the locks from up above, as it were, not on a boat. All the best.

Morning Alan, sorry to be late in catching up with the video. What an amazing sign these locks are. When you consider the era in which they were constructed and the available equipment, it really is quite exceptional. Your video really brought everything to life....thank you for sharing...🍷🍷

Hi Alan, thanks so much for your coverage on the 250th celebration 🎉. You’ve done them proud, fantastic editing. You’ve really captured what an amazing feat of engineering it is . How they managed it back in the day I don’t know. That would have been something to behold. Your footage from ground, water and air really brought it all to life and you can see how very steep it is. The second boat that came down and exited the bottom lock looked dwarfed by the huge structure behind it. Great job Alan

Loved the video Alan especially as I was lucky enough to visit the locks last year. . . . they were absolutely amazing. I was taken aback by how steep they are and the work involved to build them back in the day. You just have to take your hat off to those workers.

Hi Alan. Thanks for a fantastic and very informative vlog. I take it it takes longer to go up due to the amount of water needed and the amount of paddles that need to be opened and closed. Keep up the great work and thank you once again.

So glad you liked it Shamus. I wish I’d asked that question but I agree, I feel it has to be to do with the volume of water or time difference in filling/emptying depending on direction of travel.

Hi there Alan, Five Rise..... I (sorry we) try to visit every time we visit son and family. We have made a trip to Bingley every time we have had the opportunity since '82 when we had our first ever Yorkshire Hols. This is the second time I have viewed this video. Best as always. Bob and Helen Ps Have you tried The Old Brown Cow?.... A very good Tim Taylors Pub just across the busy road!

Thank you for this 250th terrific video! By the way, although my husband and I love your channel, we miss every week the introductory clip of the two swans with their necks together in a hart shape! Any chance of restoring that priceless image to the channel?

  • @MyNarrowboatVenture

I’m so glad you enjoyed it and thank you for your ongoing support of the channel. The swans mating was a lucky capture some years ago now. Although it may not appear so, the brief intro involves a lot more work than you might imagine. All the clips are the same length and fitting them to the words and music is quite a challenge. For the swans to re-appear would mean losing another clip, so it’s not an easy change to make. I’m glad you liked it though.

I'm not sure how they would have been able to improve this design using the technology of the day, other than two sets of locks, one for boats going up and one for boats coming down.

I’ve always thought twin locks is a good idea, as it allows travel in either direction, and might speed the process of going through locks but could have an adverse affect on water usage.
