381. Canal Towpath Re-surfacing

In this second and final part, the volunteers have use of a workboat to transport 3 tons of Grano surfacing material from Napton Canal and River Trust Depot on the Oxford Canal to the towpath opposite Napton Narrowboats, where 'wash-hole' repairs are being made. A ‘wash hole’ is an area of towpath that has eroded and washed out, usually caused by passing boats. This video was filmed four years ago and is now re-published with a new introduction.

The tow path is looking much improved after all the hard work by everyone. That certainly wouldn’t be an easy job under ideal conditions but your group managed to get so much done. Thanks for taking us along

Evening Alan, I think you phrased it perfectly with your reference to how long it's taken to do this small stretch, compared with 2K miles of canal network. I hope that your videos help boaters, and others, be more respectful towards the towpaths...many thanks for sharing...🍷🍷

Evening Steve. The CRT get a lot of stick but they have a difficult job to do. Wash holes get caused by boats passing, it can’t always be avoided and doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going too fast or such like. All the best 🥂

Alan, I find it fascinating, the amount of work it takes to maintain the canal system. I'm so glad the CRT & you volunteers are there to do these things! ❤

Thank you, I’m glad you found it interesting, as I’ve said in the vlogs, it is very labour intensive repairing towpaths and dealing with offside vegetation.

Fascinating video. Tow path repairs are not as simple as one would think. You have given us a good overview of the actual work on the tow path, and, in addtion, you could have mentioned the work needed to obtain, transport, and load the tons of surfacing material. Thanks.

Thank you Holly, I’m glad you have a better understanding of towpath repairs. . The CRT have some of their own workboats and sometimes hire them in. I wasn’t involved in that aspect nor the procurement of the Grano material, it was already on the boat. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I was born on a narrow boat in 1950 . and only left my boat two years ago due to health issues.. Unfortunately I have witnessed the decline of the canal system over the years. Years ago people used to empty ashes from their fires and stoves on the towpaths to try and keep them free of mud... Unfortunately you are not allowed to do this anymore ???? Which is why they have become nothing than stretches of mud. Anyway Alan keep safe and well mate...

Greetings Wayne, thanks for watching and commenting, I'm sorry to hear of your ill health. You must have seen so many changes over the years, the decline, and then the renaissance as a leisure industry. The CRT are under resourced for the job they have to do, and therefore have a heavy reliance on volunteers. The ash sounds like a great idea, I looked into this a while back and believe it's ok to leave wood ashes on, or on the edge of the towpath but not coal ash. All the best, take care.

Thanks Alan, you all made a good job of the towpath repair. Very well coordinated, you all seemed to work well together 👍 is this normal practice for there to be one employee and the rest volunteers? This is not a negative comment, it makes sense as the cost to maintain the whole network is immense

Hi Paul, this was four years ago, at that time when I did offside vegetation cutting and towpath repairs, we usually worked with one employee. Sometimes volunteers work by themselves, co-ordination tends to be good, if you didn’t like who you were working with, you could give it a miss.
